Abstract

The present invention provides methods for inhibiting the formation of ice on a surface, reducing contact line pinning at a water-solid interface, inhibiting the transition of water from a vapor state to a solid state (i.e., desublimation), and decreasing adhesion of a substance to a surface, which methods comprise, in various aspects, applying to a surface one or more phase change materials where the phase change materials have a melting point above a temperature at which ice formation occurs on the surface. Anti-icing compositions are further provided.

Claims (24)

1. A method for inhibiting the formation of ice on a surface, the method comprising applying to the surface one or more phase change materials, wherein the one or more phase change materials have a melting point in the range of 0° C. to 30° C., and wherein the phase change materials are selected from the group consisting of cyclohexane, peanut oil, corn oil, eucalyptol, 1-phenyl dodecane, phenyl-cyclohexane, fennel oil, 2′-hydroxy-acetophenone, ethyl cinnamate, anise oil, cyclo-octane, 2-heptyne, n-dodecyl acetate, oleic acid, benzene, nitrobenzene, cyclohexylbenzene, 1,2,3-tribromopropane, 2,2-dimethyl-3-pentanol, hexafluorobenzene, ethylene dibromide, tert-butyl mercaptan, bromoform, diiodomethane, bicyclohexyl, DMSO, 1-bromonaphthalene, ethylenediamine, and formamide,

wherein the one or more phase change materials are incorporated within a layer of a polymer; and

wherein the polymer is an organohydrogel.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises, after applying to the surface the one or more phase change materials, allowing water to be disposed on the surface, and allowing the surface to reach a temperature of 0° C. or colder while the water is disposed thereon, the inhibition of the formation of ice comprising delaying the freezing of the water.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the organohydrogel comprises gelatin.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the surface comprises one or more surfaces of a motorized or non-motorized vehicle.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the phase change materials are DMSO and cyclo-octane; and wherein the composition further comprises one or more polymers.

6. A deicing or anti-icing composition comprising:

a layer of a polymer; and

incorporated within the layer of the polymer, one or more phase change materials, wherein the one or more phase change materials have a melting point in the range of 0-30° C.,

wherein the phase change material is DMSO; and wherein the polymer is an organohydrogel comprising gelatin.

7. The composition of claim 6 , further comprising one or more solvents, diluents, thickeners, surfactants, polymers, nanoparticles, pigments, carriers, biologically active ingredients, or emulsifiers.

8. The composition of claim 6 disposed as a layer on a surface, wherein the composition is disposed on the surface in an amount such that the layer has a thickness in the range of 100 micron to 10 mm.

9. The composition of claim 6 , wherein when deposited on a surface, the composition spontaneously self-heals mechanical damage to the composition in the presence of water condensation.

10. The composition of claim 6 , wherein the composition does not comprise a glycol-based fluid.

11. A method for inhibiting the formation of ice on a surface, the method comprising providing the composition of claim 6 as a layer on the surface.

12. A deicing or anti-icing composition comprising:

a layer of a polymer; and

incorporated within the layer of the polymer, one or more phase change materials, wherein the one or more phase change materials have a melting point in the range of 0-30° C.,

wherein the polymer is a copolymer of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol.

13. The composition of claim 12 , wherein the polymer is a block copolymer of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol.

14. The composition of claim 13 , wherein the phase change materials are selected from the group consisting of cyclohexane, peanut oil, corn oil, eucalyptol, 1-phenyl dodecane, phenyl-cyclohexane, fennel oil, 2′-hydroxy-acetophenone, ethyl cinnamate, anise oil, cyclo-octane, 2-heptyne, n-dodecyl acetate, oleic acid, benzene, nitrobenzene, cyclohexylbenzene, 1,2,3-tribromopropane, 2,2-dimethyl-3-pentanol, hexafluorobenzene, ethylene dibromide, tert-butyl mercaptan, bromoform, diiodomethane, bicyclohexyl, DMSO, 1-bromonaphthalene, ethylenediamine, and formamide.

15. A method for inhibiting the formation of ice on a surface, the method comprising providing the composition of claim 12 as a layer on the surface.

16. A method for inhibiting the formation of ice on a surface, the method comprising providing the composition of claim 13 as a layer on the surface.
