Abstract

Disclosed are methods of enhancing plant growth, comprising treating plant seed or the plant that germinates from the seed with an effective amount of at least one chitooligosaccharide, wherein upon harvesting the plant exhibits at least one of increased plant yield measured in terms of bushels/acre, increased root number, increased root length, increased root mass, increased root volume and increased leaf area, compared to untreated plants or plants harvested from untreated seed.

Claims (22)

1. A method, comprising introducing at least one chitin oligomer into a plant growth medium in an amount sufficient to enhance the growth and/or yield of a plant grown therein, wherein said at least one chitin oligomer comprises at least one chitin oligomer represented by the formula:

in which R 1 represents hydrogen or methyl; R 2 represents hydrogen or methyl; R 3 represents hydrogen, acetyl or carbamoyl; R 4 represents hydrogen, acetyl or carbamoyl; R 5 represents hydrogen, acetyl or carbamoyl; R 6 represents hydrogen, arabinosyl, fucosyl, acetyl, sulfate ester, 3-0-S-2-0-MeFuc, 2-0-MeFuc, or 4-0-AcFuc; R 7 represents hydrogen, mannosyl or glycerol; R 8 represents hydrogen, methyl, or —CH 2 OH; R 9 represents hydrogen, arabinosyl, or fucosyl; R 10 represents hydrogen, acetyl or fucosyl; and n represents 0, 1, 2 or 3.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said at least one chitin oligomer comprises at least one chitin oligomer represented by the formula:

wherein n=1 or 2; R 1 represents hydrogen or methyl; and R 2 represents hydrogen or SO 3 H.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said at least one chitin oligomer comprises a chitin oligomer represented by the structure:

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said at least one chitin oligomer comprises a chitin oligomer represented by the structure:

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said at least one chitin oligomer comprises a chitin oligomer represented by the structure:

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said at least one chitin oligomer comprises a chitin oligomer represented by the structure:

7. A method, comprising introducing at least one chitin oligomer into a field soil in an amount sufficient to enhance the growth and/or yield of a plant grown therein, wherein said at least one chitin oligomer is introduced into said field soil at a rate of about 1 to about 70 μg per acre.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said at least one chitin oligomer is introduced into said plant growth medium at a concentration ranging from about 10 −14 to about 10 −5 Molar.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein said at least one chitin oligomer is introduced into said plant growth medium at a concentration ranging from 10 −11 to about 10 −5 Molar.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein said plant growth medium is a field soil, and wherein said at least one chitin oligomer is introduced into said field soil at a rate of about 1 to about 70 μg per acre.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein said plant is a cereal plant.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein said at least one chitin oligomer is introduced into said field soil at a concentration ranging from about 10 −14 to about 10 −5 Molar.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein said at least one chitin oligomer is introduced into said field soil at a concentration ranging from about 10 −11 to about 10 −5 Molar.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein said at least one chitin oligomer is introduced into said field soil at a concentration ranging from about 10 −8 to about 10 −7 Molar.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein said at least one chitin oligomer is introduced into said field soil at a rate of about 50 to about 60 μg per acre.

16. A method, comprising introducing at least one chitin oligomer into a plant growth medium in an amount sufficient to enhance the growth and/or yield of a plant grown therein, wherein said chitin oligomer is not a lipo-chitooligosaccharide, and wherein said plant is a cereal plant.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein said plant is a corn plant.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein said plant is a wheat plant.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein said plant is an alfalfa plant.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein said plant is a cotton plant.
