Abstract

Disclosed are devices, systems, methods, and media for efficient emergency calling using digital devices. In some embodiments, a user is able to make an emergency call by a one-touch or dual-touch process. An authentication process may reduce inadvertent and unauthorized emergency calling. Persistent emergency buttons are also disclosed that may be used for calling emergency in different states of the device.

Claims (35)

1. A smartphone comprising a processor, a memory, a user interface comprising a touchscreen display, a network element for wireless communications, and instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

present one or more interactive elements for requesting emergency assistance on the touchscreen display;

receive one or more user interactions with the one or more interactive elements for requesting emergency assistance on the touchscreen display, wherein the one or more user interactions are indicative of an emergency;

initiate a delay timer for sending an emergency alert after the one or more user interactions indicative of the emergency are received;

present an option for a user to cancel the emergency alert before the delay timer expires; and

transmit the emergency alert to an emergency management system based on the delay timer expiring without user cancellation of the emergency alert.

2. The smartphone of claim 1 , wherein the one or more user interactions comprises pressing or touching the one or more interactive elements continuously.

3. The smartphone of claim 1 , wherein the one or more interactive elements for requesting emergency assistance comprises a soft button.

4. The smartphone of claim 1 , wherein the emergency alert comprises a current location for the smartphone.

5. The smartphone of claim 4 , wherein the current location information comprises GPS coordinates, an address, or both.

6. The smartphone of claim 1 , wherein the emergency alert comprises pre-saved user information.

7. The smartphone of claim 6 , wherein the pre-saved user information comprises medical information.

8. The smartphone of claim 1 , wherein the delay timer is displayed on the touchscreen display.

9. The smartphone of claim 8 , wherein the delay timer is between 3 seconds and 20 seconds.

10. The smartphone of claim 8 , wherein the delay timer is 10 seconds.

11. The smartphone of claim 1 , wherein the delay timer is customized with a set time.

12. The smartphone of claim 1 , wherein the processor is caused to not send the emergency alert to the emergency management system based upon user cancellation.

13. The smartphone of claim 1 , wherein the emergency alert is transmitted to the emergency management system in order to alert an appropriate public safety answering point (PSAP) based on a location information and a jurisdictional boundary of the PSAP.

14. A computer-implemented method of sending an emergency alert, comprising:

presenting one or more interactive elements for requesting emergency assistance on a touchscreen display of smart device;

receiving one or more user interactions with the one or more interactive elements for requesting emergency assistance on the touchscreen display, wherein the one or more user interactions are indicative of an emergency;

initiating a delay timer for sending an emergency alert after the one or more user interactions indicative of the emergency are received;

presenting an option on the touchscreen display for a user to cancel the emergency alert before the delay timer expires; and

transmitting the emergency alert to an emergency management system based on the delay timer expiring without user cancellation of the emergency alert.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the one or more user interactions comprises pressing or touching the one or more interactive elements continuously.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the emergency alert comprises a current GPS location or address for the smart device.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the delay timer is displayed on the touchscreen display.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the delay timer is between 3 seconds and 20 seconds.

19. Non-transitory computer readable storage media encoded with a computer program including instructions executable by at least one processor that cause the at least one processor to:

present one or more interactive elements for requesting emergency assistance on a touchscreen display;

receive, from a user, one or more user interactions with the one or more interactive elements for requesting emergency assistance on the touchscreen display, wherein the one or more user interactions are indicative of an emergency;

initiating a delay timer for sending an emergency alert after the one or more user interactions indicative of the emergency are received;

present an option for the user to cancel the emergency alert before the delay timer expires; and

transmit the emergency alert to an emergency management system based on the delay timer expiring without user cancellation of the emergency alert.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 19 , wherein the computer program is a mobile application.
