Abstract

A total artificial spinous process (spino)-laminar prosthesis (TASP-LP) including a body having a portion forming a spinous process extending away from the body, a first lamina portion extending from a first side of the body, and a second lamina portion extending from a second side of the body, wherein the first lamina portion and the second lamina portion are disposed on opposite sides of the spinous process.

Claims (39)

1 . A spinal lamina implant comprising:

an implant body configured to be implanted into a spine portion of a patient, the implant body comprising:

a first lamina portion extending from a first end to a second end, the first lamina portion including at least a first top surface and a first bottom surface opposite the first top surface, and at least one first opening formed proximate to the second end from the top surface to the bottom surface, the at least one first opening arranged so as to allow passage of a connection mechanism through the first lamina portion;

a second lamina portion extending from a third end to a fourth end, the second lamina portion including at least a second top surface and a second bottom surface opposite the top surface, and at least one second opening formed proximate to the fourth end from the second top surface to the second bottom surface, the at least one second opening arranged so as to allow passage of a connection mechanism through the second lamina portion, the first end of the first lamina portion and the third end of the second lamina portion pivotably coupled so that the first lamina portion is configured to move relative to the second lamina portion;

a first cavity formed in the first lamina portion between the first and second end, the first cavity extending between the first top surface and the first bottom surface; and

a second cavity formed in the second lamina portion between the third and fourth end, the second cavity extending between the second top surface and the second bottom surface; and

wherein the implant body comprises titanium; and

wherein the spinal lamina implant is configured to have bifid spinous morphology.

2 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 1 , wherein at least the first bottom surface of the first lamina portion and the second bottom surface of the second lamina portion each comprise a contoured surface, the contoured surface being shaped to engage with adjacent anatomical features of the spine portion of the patient.

3 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 2 , wherein the contoured surface of the first bottom surface of the first lamina portion and the second bottom surface of the second lamina portion comprises a curved surface.

4 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first opening further comprises a recess formed in the first top surface of the first lamina portion.

5 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 1 , further comprising means for attaching the first lamina portion and the second lamina portion of the implant body to the spine portion of the patient through the at least one first and second openings.

6 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 1 , wherein the first cavity and the second cavity is further configured to receive bone material to facilitate attachment of the implant body and the spine portion of the patient by bone fusion.

7 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 1 , wherein the spinal lamina implant is a 3D printed implant and wherein the implant body is configured to mimic a portion of a thoracic or lumbar spine, having a shape, height, and width based on a 3-dimensional computer rendition of a natural thoracic or lumbar spine portion.

8 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 1 , wherein the first lamina portion comprises at least one curved portion between the first end and the second end and the second lamina portion comprises at least one curved portion between the third end and the fourth end.

9 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 8 , wherein the first end of the first lamina portion and the third end of the second lamina portion are pivotably coupled in a region configured to have a shape of a spinous process.

10 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 9 , wherein the first end of the first lamina portion and the third end of the second lamina portion are pivotably coupled by a pin.

11 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 9 , wherein the first cavity and the second cavity are configured to allow the first lamina portion and the second lamina portion, respectively, to flex.

12 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 10 , wherein the first lamina portion is configured to rotate relative to the second lamina portion about a hinge.

13 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 12 , wherein a rotation of the first lamina portion relative to the second portion about a hinge is configured to allow the implant body to provide bilateral support to mimic a size and shape of a natural spine portion of the patient.

14 . A spinal lamina implant comprising:

a lamina wing extending from a first end to a second end, the lamina wing comprising:

a first portion, a second portion, and a third portion, wherein each of the first, second and third portions comprise at least a top surface and a bottom surface opposite the top surface, the first portion extending from the first end of the lamina wing to a beginning of the second portion, the top surface of the first portion being parallel to a first plane, the second portion extending from the beginning of the second portion to a beginning of the third portion, the top surface of the second portion being parallel to a second plane, and the third portion extending from the beginning of the third portion to the second end of the lamina wing, the top surface of the third portion being parallel to a third plane;

at least one first opening formed in the first portion proximate to the first end of the lamina wing, the at least one first opening configured to allow passage of a connection mechanism through the first portion of the lamina wing;

at least one second opening formed proximate to the second end from the top surface to the bottom surface of the third portion, the at least one second opening configured to allow passage of a connection mechanism through the lamina wing; and

a cavity formed in the lamina wing between the first and second end, the cavity extending between the top surface and the bottom surface of the second portion, the cavity configured to allow flexing of the lamina wing; and

wherein second plane is orthogonal to the first and third planes, such that the lamina wing comprises a first bend between the first portion the second portion and a second bend between the second portion and the third portion, and wherein the first portion, the second portion and the third portion of the lamina wing are integrally formed.

15 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 14 , wherein the lamina wing comprises a biocompatible material.

16 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 14 , wherein the bottom surface of the lamina wing comprises contoured surface shaped to engage with adjacent anatomical features of a spine portion of a patient.

17 . The spinal lamina implant of claim 14 , wherein the lamina wing is configured to be joined with another lamina wing at a hinge to provide a bifid morphology.

18 . A spinal lamina implant comprising:

a lamina wing extending from a first end to a second end, the lamina wing comprising:

at least a top surface and a bottom surface opposite the top surface;

at least one first opening formed proximate to the first end of the lamina wing, the at least one first opening configured to allow passage of a connection mechanism through the lamina wing;

at least one second opening formed proximate to the second end from the top surface to the bottom surface, the at least one second opening configured to allow passage of a connection mechanism through the lamina wing; and

a cavity formed in the lamina wing between the first and second end, the cavity extending between the top surface and the bottom surface, the cavity configured to allow flexing of the lamina wing; and

wherein the lamina wing comprises at least one portion between the first end and the second end that is curved or angled in a direction of the top or bottom surface, and the lamina wing is configured to be joined with another lamina wing at a hinge to provide a bifid morphology.
