Abstract

In a wireless communication network, a Domain Name System (DNS) receives an Access Point Identifier (AP ID) for an access point that serves a User Equipment (UE). The DNS converts the AP ID into an Access Gateway Identifier (AGW ID) that comprises a location identifier. The DNS selects an External Gateway Identifier (EGW ID) that comprises the location identifier. The access gateway receives control signals having the AGW ID and exchanges user data between the access point and the external gateway to serve the UE. The co-located external gateway receives additional control signals having the EGW ID and exchanges the user data between the access gateway and an external system to serve the UE.

Claims (34)

1. A method of operating a wireless communication network to serve User Equipment (UE) over a first gateway and a co-located second gateway, the method comprising:

a first computing device receiving a request from a Gateway Control Plane (GW CP) that has an Access Point Identifier (AP ID) for an access point that is wirelessly serving the UE, converting the AP ID into a first Gateway Identifier (GW ID) for the first gateway wherein the first GW ID comprises a location identifier, translating the first GW ID into a second GW ID for the co-located second gateway based on the location identifier, and transferring a response that has the first GW ID and the second GW ID to the GW CP;

the first gateway receiving control signals having the first GW ID from the GW CP, and in response, exchanging user data with the access point and exchanging the user data with the co-located second gateway to serve the UE; and

the co-located second gateway receiving additional control signals having the second GW ID from the GW CP, and in response, exchanging the user data with the first gateway and exchanging the user data with an external system to serve the UE.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first gateway and the co-located second gateway exchanging the user data to serve the UE comprises exchanging the user data for a Local Break-Out (LBO) service.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the first gateway and the co-located second gateway exchanging the user data to serve the UE comprises exchanging the user data for a low-latency data service.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the first gateway comprises a User Plane Function (UPF).

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the co-located second gateway comprises a User Plane Function (UPF).

6. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the first gateway comprises a User Plane Function (UPF); and

the co-located second gateway comprises another UPF.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the first gateway comprises a System Architecture Evolution (SAE) gateway; and

the co-located second gateway comprises the SAE gateway.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the access point that wirelessly serves the UE comprises a New Radio (NR) gNodeB.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the access point that wirelessly serves the UE comprises a WiFi access node.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the first gateway and the co-located second gateway are less than 1000 feet from one another.

11. A wireless communication network to serve User Equipment (UE) over a first gateway and a co-located second gateway, the wireless communication network comprising:

a first computing device configured to receive a request from a Gateway Control Plane (GW CP) that has an Access Point Identifier (AP ID) for an access point that is wirelessly serving the UE, convert the AP ID into a first Gateway Identifier (GW ID) for the first gateway wherein the first GW ID comprises a location identifier, translate the first GW ID into a second GW ID for the co-located second gateway based on the location identifier, and transfer a response that has the first GW ID and the second GW ID to the GW CP;

the first gateway configured to receive control signals having the first GW ID from the GW CP, and in response, exchange user data with the access point and exchange the user data with the co-located second gateway to serve the UE; and

the co-located second gateway configured to receive additional control signals having the second GW ID from the GW CP, and in response, exchange the user data with the first gateway and exchange the user data with an external system to serve the UE.

12. The wireless communication network of claim 11 wherein the first gateway and the co-located second gateway are configured to exchange the user data for a Local Break-Out (LBO) service to serve the UE.

13. The wireless communication network of claim 11 wherein the first gateway and the co-located second gateway are configured to exchange the user data for a low-latency data service to serve the UE.

14. The wireless communication network of claim 11 wherein the first gateway comprises a User Plane Function (UPF).

15. The wireless communication network of claim 11 wherein the co-located second gateway comprises a User Plane Function (UPF).

16. The wireless communication network of claim 11 wherein:

the first gateway comprises a User Plane Function (UPF); and

the co-located second gateway comprises another UPF.

17. The wireless communication network of claim 11 wherein:

the first gateway comprises a System Architecture Evolution (SAE) gateway; and

the co-located second gateway comprises the SAE gateway.

18. The wireless communication network of claim 11 wherein the access point that wirelessly serves the UE comprises a New Radio (NR) gNodeB.

19. The wireless communication network of claim 11 wherein the access point that wirelessly serves the UE comprises a WiFi access node.

20. The wireless communication network of claim 11 wherein the first gateway and the co-located second gateway are less than 1000 feet from one another.
