Abstract

An ionization chamber is provided with a series of parallel plates spaced from each other and with holes passing therethrough. Alternating plates have either a highest high voltage or a lower high voltage provided thereto, such as through a DC transformer coupled to an electric power source. Holes in alternating plates are preferably offset so that airflow through the plates occurs along curving pathways. The plates are sufficiently highly charged to cause carbon dioxide to be ionized and for carbon ions to become trapped within wells defining lowest regions of electric charge within an electric field inside the ionization chamber. Fans control airflow through the ionization chamber. A dehumidifier is provided upstream of the ionization chamber to reduce moisture content within the incoming gas. After the carbon has collected within the wells, harvesting of the carbon ions as carbon nano particle powder can occur within a carbon cache.

Claims (22)

1. A system for capture of carbon from carbon containing molecules in the ambient atmosphere, the system comprising in combination:

an ionization chamber having an inlet for ambient atmospheric gas and an outlet for reduced carbon molecule containing gas;

at least one driver oriented to drive gas from said inlet of said ionization chamber to said outlet of said ionization chamber;

said ionization chamber including:

a plurality of first plates;

said first plates having holes passing therethrough;

said first plates charged to a first positive voltage;

a plurality of second plates;

said second plates having holes passing therethrough;

said second plates charged to a second positive voltage;

said first positive voltage of said first plates having a higher positive voltage than said second positive voltage of said second plates; and

said first plates and said second plates arranged parallel to each other and in an alternating pattern with space therebetween; and

a source of high-voltage electricity coupled electrically to said first plates and said second plates to maintain said first plates at said first positive voltage and said second plates at said second positive voltage.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein a dehumidifier is provided upstream of said inlet of said ionization chamber.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein said ionization chamber includes an outer enclosure, said outer enclosure including an inlet duct for passage of gas into said ionization chamber, wherein a fan is provided as at least a portion of said driver, said fan located adjacent to said inlet duct for control of flow of gas into said ionization chamber.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein said ionization chamber includes an outlet duct on a side of said ionization chamber opposite said inlet duct, and wherein an output fan is located adjacent to said outlet duct.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein a dehumidifier is provided upstream of said inlet fan of said ionization chamber, such that gas discharged from said dehumidifier is fed through said inlet duct and into said ionization chamber, and wherein a system inlet fan is provided upstream of said dehumidifier.

6. The system of claim 5 wherein at least one sensor is provided along an airflow pathway through said dehumidifier and said ionization chamber, said at least one sensor sensing at least one air property taken from a group of air properties including humidity and pressure, and wherein said at least one sensor is coupled to a computer which outputs flow rate command signals to at least one of said fans of said system for control of flow of gas therethrough.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein a carbon collection cache is located below said first plates and said second plates of said ionization chamber for collection of carbon in a particle powder.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein said first plates and said second plates are formed of conductive materials; and

wherein said first plates are formed primarily of copper and said second plates are formed primarily of aluminum.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein said holes in said first plates and said holes in said second plates are offset from each other, such that airflow through said holes in said first plates and through said holes in said second plates does not occur along a straight line.
