Abstract

A gaming system including a housing and a reel assembly including rotatable reel having a reel strip including a space symbol having an image space area and a graphic area, and a transmissive display device defining a see-through window aligned with the rotatable reel and configured to display an image in the window aligned with the image space area of the space symbol of the reel strip.

Claims (46)

1. An electronic gaming machine comprising:

a housing;

a reel assembly supported by the housing, the reel assembly comprising a rotatable reel comprising a reel strip, the reel strip comprising a plurality of symbols comprising a space symbol, the space symbol comprising an image space area and a graphic area;

a transmissive display device supported by the housing in a position in front of the reel assembly, the transmissive display device defining a see-through window aligned with the rotatable reel;

a processor; and

a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the processor cause the processor to:

cause the rotatable reel to rotate,

cause the rotatable reel to stop at a position in which the space symbol of the reel strip is viewable through the see-through window,

communicate data to the transmissive display device to cause the transmissive display device to display an image in the window aligned with the image space area of the space symbol of the reel strip, and

communicate data to the transmissive display device to cause the transmissive display device to not display any image in the window aligned with the graphic area of the space symbol.

2. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the image space area of the space symbol is within the graphic area of the space symbol.

3. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the image space area of the space symbol is adjacent to the graphic area of the space symbol.

4. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the image space area of the space symbol is connected to the graphic area of the space symbol.

5. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the image space area of the space symbol is dis-connected from the graphic area of the space symbol.

6. The electronic gaming machine of claim 5 , wherein the image space area of the space symbol is off-set from the graphic area of the space symbol.

7. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the space symbol comprises an outer border, and the image space area of the space symbol and the graphic area of the space symbol are within the outer border.

8. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the reel strip comprises a non-space symbol that does not have an image space area.

9. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the image space area of the space symbol is white and the graphic area of the space symbol is another color.

10. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to cause the rotatable reel to stop at the position in which the space symbol of the reel strip is viewable through the see-through window, and communicate data to the transmissive display device to cause the transmissive display device to display the image in the window aligned with the image space area of the space symbol of the reel strip as part of one of: a play of a primary game and a play of a secondary game.

11. An electronic gaming machine comprising:

a housing;

a reel assembly supported by the housing, the reel assembly comprising a plurality of rotatable reels, each reel comprising a reel strip, the reel strips comprising a plurality of symbols comprising a plurality of different space symbols, each of the space symbols comprising an image space area and a graphic area;

a transmissive display device supported by the housing in a position in front of the reel assembly, the transmissive display device defining a plurality of see-through windows aligned with the plurality of rotatable reels;

a processor; and

a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the processor cause the processor to:

cause the rotatable reels to rotate,

cause the rotatable reels to stop at positions in which the space symbols of the reel strips are viewable through the see-through windows,

communicate data to the transmissive display device to cause the transmissive display device to display different images in the windows aligned with the respective image space areas of the space symbols of the reel strips, and

communicate data to the transmissive display device to cause the transmissive display device to, for at least of the space symbols, not display any image in the window aligned with the graphic area of that displayed space symbol.

12. The electronic gaming machine of claim 11 , wherein fora first one of the space symbols, the image space area of that space symbol is one of: (i) within the graphic area of that space symbol, (ii) adjacent to the graphic area of that space symbol, (iii) connected to the graphic area of that space symbol, (iv) dis-connected from the graphic area of that space symbol, and (v) off-set from the graphic area of that space symbol.

13. The electronic gaming machine of claim 12 , wherein for a second one of the space symbols, the image space area of that space symbol is one of: (i) within the graphic area of that space symbol, (ii) adjacent to the graphic area of that space symbol, (iii) connected to the graphic area of that space symbol, (iv) dis-connected from the graphic area of that space symbol, and (v) off-set from the graphic area of that space symbol.

14. The electronic gaming machine of claim 11 , wherein the reel strips each comprises at least one non-space symbol that does not have an image space area.

15. An electronic gaming machine comprising:

a housing;

a reel assembly supported by the housing, the reel assembly comprising a rotatable reel comprising a reel strip, the reel strip comprising a plurality of symbols comprising a space symbol, the space symbol comprising an image space area and a graphic area, the space symbol comprising an outer border, and wherein the image space area of the space symbol and the graphic area of the space symbol are within the outer border;

a transmissive display device supported by the housing in a position in front of the reel assembly, the transmissive display device defining a see-through window aligned with the rotatable reel;

a processor; and

a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the processor cause the processor to:

cause the rotatable reel to rotate,

cause the rotatable reel to stop at a position in which the space symbol of the reel strip is viewable through the see-through window,

communicate data to the transmissive display device to cause the transmissive display device to display an image in the window aligned with the image space area of the space symbol of the reel strip, and

communicate data to the transmissive display device to cause the transmissive display device to not display any image in the window aligned with the graphic area of the space symbol.

16. The electronic gaming machine of claim 15 , wherein the reel strip comprises a non-space symbol that does not have an image space area.

17. The electronic gaming machine of claim 15 , wherein the image space area of the space symbol is white and the graphic area of the space symbol is another color.

18. The electronic gaming machine of claim 15 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to cause the rotatable reel to stop at the position in which the space symbol of the reel strip is viewable through the see-through window, and communicate data to the transmissive display device to cause the transmissive display device to display the image in the window aligned with the image space area of the space symbol of the reel strip as part of: one of a play of a primary game and a play of a secondary game.

19. The electronic gaming machine of claim 15 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to select the image displayed by the transmissive display device based on the image space area of the space symbol displayed by the reel strip.
