Abstract

Methods and articles of manufacture for hosting a safety critical application on an uncontrolled data processing device are provided. Various checks and combinations of checks including installation, functional, host integrity, coexistence, interoperability, power management, and environment checks are performed at various times to determine if the safety critical application operates properly on the device. The operation of the SCA on the UDPD may be controlled accordingly.

Claims (34)

1. A method for hosting a safety critical application for glucose monitoring on an uncontrolled data processing device, the uncontrolled data processing device being configured to permit a user to make software and/or hardware changes to the uncontrolled data processing device and being configured for data communication with a continuous in vivo glucose monitoring device including an in vivo glucose sensor for providing measurement data related to the user's glucose, wherein the in vivo glucose monitoring device is configured to process the measurement data from the analyte sensor, the method comprising:

determining, with an uncontrolled data processing device, whether a safety critical application is installed properly and/or functions properly on the uncontrolled data processing device, the safety critical application configured for receiving the processed measurement data from the continuous in vivo glucose monitoring device and performing glucose monitoring;

preventing, with the uncontrolled data processing device, the safety critical application from operating on the uncontrolled data processing device upon verification that the safety critical application did not install properly or does not function properly on the uncontrolled data processing device; and

permitting, with the uncontrolled data processing device, the safety critical application to operate freely on the uncontrolled data processing device upon verification that the safety critical application is installed properly and/or functions properly on the uncontrolled data processing device,

wherein the safety critical application is a medically-related application and the uncontrolled data processing device is a wireless personal device comprising a display.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the in vivo glucose sensor comprises a partially implanted glucose sensor.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the uncontrolled data processing device comprises a handheld data processing device.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the uncontrolled data processing device comprises a mobile telephone.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the preventing of the SCA from operating on the UDPD comprises disabling, with the UDPD, the SCA from being run on the UDPD.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the determining whether the SCA functions properly on the UDPD comprises:

initiating, with the UDPD, an image to be displayed on a display of the UDPD, the image in the form of a verification inquiry;

receiving, with the UDPD, user input in response to the verification inquiry; and

comparing, with the UDPD, the user input received with reference display data.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the determining whether the SCA functions properly on the UDPD comprises: determining, with the UDPD, whether the SCA communicates properly on the UDPD with an external device.

8. The method according to claim 7 , wherein determining whether the safety critical application is installed properly and/or functions properly on the uncontrolled data processing device comprises performing at least one of an installation check, a functional check, an environment check, a host integrity check, a coexistence check, an interoperability check and a power management check.

9. The method according to claim 6 , wherein determining whether the safety critical application is installed properly and/or functions properly on the uncontrolled data processing device comprises performing at least one of an installation check, a functional check, an environment check, a host integrity check, a coexistence check, an interoperability check and a power management check.

10. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the determining whether the SCA functions properly on the UDPD comprises: determining, with the UDPD, whether the SCA communicates properly on the UDPD with an external device.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein determining whether the safety critical application is installed properly and/or functions properly on the uncontrolled data processing device comprises performing at least one of an installation check, a functional check, an environment check, a host integrity check, a coexistence check, an interoperability check and a power management check.

12. The method according to claim 5 , wherein determining whether the safety critical application is installed properly and/or functions properly on the uncontrolled data processing device comprises performing at least one of an installation check, a functional check, an environment check, a host integrity check, a coexistence check, are interoperability check and a power management check.

13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the determining whether the SCA functions properly on the UDPD comprises:

initiating, with the UDPD, an image to be displayed on a display of the UDPD, the image in the form of a verification inquiry;

receiving, with the UDPD, user input in response to the verification inquiry; and

comparing, with the UDPD, the user input received with reference display data.

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the determining whether the SCA functions properly on the UDPD comprises: determining, with the UDPD, whether the SCA communicates properly on the UDPD with an external device.

15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein determining whether the safety critical application is installed properly and/or functions properly on the uncontrolled data processing device comprises performing at least one of an installation check, a functional check, an environment check, a host integrity check, a coexistence check, an interoperability check and a power management check.

16. The method according to claim 13 , wherein determining whether the safety critical application is installed properly and/or functions properly on the uncontrolled data processing device comprises performing at least one of an installation check, a functional check, an environment check, a host integrity check, a coexistence check, an interoperability check and a power management check.

17. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the determining whether the SCA functions properly on the UDPD comprises: determining, with the UDPD, whether the SCA communicates properly on the UDPD with an external device.

18. The method according to claim 17 , wherein determining whether the safety critical application is installed properly and/or functions properly on the uncontrolled data processing device comprises performing at least one of an installation check, a functional check, an environment check, a host integrity check, a coexistence check, an interoperability check and a power management check.

19. The method according to claim 1 , wherein determining whether the safety critical application is installed properly and/or functions properly on the uncontrolled data processing device comprises performing at least one of an installation check, a functional check, an environment check, a host integrity check, a coexistence check, an interoperability check and a power management check.

20. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing a computer program comprising a safety critical application for glucose monitoring configured for installation on an uncontrolled data processing device, the uncontrolled data processing device being configured to permit a user to make software and/or hardware changes to the uncontrolled data processing device and being configured for data communication with a continuous in vivo monitoring device including an in vivo glucose sensor for providing measurement data related to the user's glucose, wherein the in vivo glucose monitoring device is configured to process the measurement data from the analyte sensor, the computer program comprising instructions that, when executed by the uncontrolled data processing device, cause the uncontrolled data processing device to implement the steps of:
