Abstract

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for establishing a metadata exchange channel between a media playback system and a networked microphone system, wherein the networked microphone system comprises a networked microphone device and a networked microphone server. After establishing the metadata exchange channel, the media playback system experiences a metadata exchange triggering event. In response to experiencing the metadata exchange triggering event, the media playback system provides metadata to the networked microphone system via the metadata exchange channel.

Claims (46)

1. A computing system, the computing system comprising:

one or more processors; and

at least one tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions encoded thereon, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the computing system to perform operations comprising:

obtaining, in response to a metadata exchange triggering event experienced by a media playback system, metadata associated with a configuration of the media playback system, wherein the metadata indicates that a plurality of playback devices of the media playback system belong to a group of playback devices, and that communicate with one another over a local area network to facilitate synchronous audio playback among the playback devices, are associated with audio playback;

receiving a voice input comprising a context-specific request; and

generating, in response to the voice input comprising the context-specific request, a response specifying a modification to the configuration of the media playback system, wherein the response further comprises a control instruction for controlling operation of one or more of the plurality of playback devices based on the modification of the configuration.

2. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium comprises program instructions that are executable by the one or more processors such that the computing system performs further operations comprising:

transmitting the response to the media playback system, thereby facilitating the modification to the configuration of the media playback system.

3. The computing system of claim 2 , wherein the at least one tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium comprises program instructions that are executable by the one or more processors such that the computing system performs further operations comprising:

controlling, based on the control instruction, one or more of the plurality of playback devices.

4. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium comprises program instructions that are executable by the one or more processors such that the computing system performs further operations comprising:

facilitating establishment of a metadata exchange channel with the media playback system; and

obtaining the metadata associated with the configuration of the media playback system via the metadata exchange channel.

5. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the metadata exchange triggering event comprises any one or more of: (1) the media playback system playing back a new media content item, (2) the media playback system receiving a playback command via a networked microphone system, (3) passage of a defined period of time, or (4) the media playback system experiencing a state change.

6. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the metadata comprises any one or more of: (1) one or more configuration parameters of the media playback system, (2) information about audio content currently playing via the media playback system, (3) historical information associated with the audio content played by the media playback system, or (4) user preference information.

7. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium comprises program instructions that are executable by the one or more processors such that the computing system performs further operations comprising:

obtaining the metadata when any one or more of (1) a configuration change associated with the media playback system occurs, (2) starting or stopping of a playback of audio content occurs, (3) receiving an indication that currently playing audio content is liked or disliked, (4) adding or removing the audio content from a playlist, or (5) adding or removing the audio content from a playback queue.

8. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium comprises program instructions that are executable by the one or more processors such that the computing system performs further operations comprising:

generating the response based on the metadata associated with the configuration of the media playback system.

9. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium comprises program instructions that are executable by the one or more processors such that the computing system performs further operations comprising:

performing voice recognition on the voice input to determine an identify of a user associated with the voice input.

10. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium comprises program instructions that are executable by the one or more processors such that the computing system performs further operations comprising:

establishing a metadata exchange channel with the media playback system, wherein the establishing comprises establishing at least one of: (1) a one way connection from the media playback system to a networked microphone system, (2) a one way connection from a network microphone system to the media playback system, (3) a two-way connection between the media playback system and the networked microphone system, or (4) a multi-way connection between components of the media playback system and components of the networked microphone system.

11. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium comprises program instructions that are executable by the one or more processors such that the computing system performs further operations comprising:

facilitating voice control of the media playback system based on the metadata.

12. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium comprises program instructions that are executable by the one or more processors such that the computing system performs further operations comprising:

identifying audio content played by the media playback system based on the metadata.

13. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium comprises program instructions that are executable by the one or more processors such that the computing system performs further operations comprising:

facilitating configuration of the media playback system to share the metadata.

14. A tangible, non-transitory computer-readable media comprising program instructions, wherein the program instructions, when executed by one or more processors, cause a computing system to perform functions comprising:

obtaining, in response to a metadata exchange triggering event experienced by a media playback system, metadata associated with a configuration of the media playback system, wherein the metadata indicates that a plurality of playback devices of the media playback system belong to a group of playback devices, and that communicate with one another over a local area network to facilitate synchronous audio playback among the playback devices, are associated with audio playback;

receiving a voice input comprising a context-specific request; and

generating, in response to the voice input comprising the context-specific request, a response specifying a modification to the configuration of the media playback system, wherein the response further comprises a control instruction for controlling operation of one or more of the plurality of playback devices based on the modification of the configuration.

15. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 14 , wherein the functions further comprise:

transmitting the response to the media playback system, thereby facilitating the modification to the configuration of the media playback system.
