Abstract

A method and apparatus for measuring a melt back of a seed in a boule are provided. The method includes lifting a boule once it has been produced using an actuating device onto a support table to automatically manipulate the boule from a furnace to the support table. The melt back of the seed is then automatically measured using a vision system that is installed on an imaging device disposed below the boule.

Claims (32)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a melt back measurement indicating a melt back of a seed within a boule that is formed inside a crucible of a furnace, wherein a vision system automatically measures the melt back by measuring a diameter of the seed after the boule is formed, the vision system being installed on an imaging device disposed below a bottom of the boule; and

adjusting a temperature setting of the furnace based on the melt back measurement.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting of the temperature setting of the furnace based on the melt back measurement comprises:

determining whether the melt back of the seed is within a predetermined diameter range based on the melt back measurement.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

adjusting the temperature setting of the furnace when it is determined that the melt back of the seed is not within the predetermined diameter range.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

cutting the boule into a plurality of wafers when it is determined that the melt back of the seed is within the predetermined diameter range.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the predetermined diameter range is from about 2.7 inches to about 3.1 inches.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting of the temperature setting of the furnace based on the melt back measurement comprises:

determining whether the melt back of the seed is a predetermined diameter of about 2.9 inches based on the melt back measurement.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining whether the boule has a determined crystallographic structure based on the melt back measurement.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

determining whether the boule has a monocrystalline structure based on the melt back measurement.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the boule is one of a silicon boule and a sapphire crystal boule.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the imaging device is further disposed below a support table on which the boule is disposed.

11. An apparatus comprising:

a vision system configured to automatically measure a melt back of a seed within a boule that is formed inside a crucible of a furnace by measuring a diameter of the seed after the boule is formed, wherein the vision system is installed on an imaging device disposed below a bottom of the boule; and

a controller configured to receive a melt back measurement indicating the melt back of the seed and adjust a temperature setting of the furnace based on the melt back measurement.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the controller is configured to adjust the temperature setting of the furnace based on the melt back measurement by:

determining whether the melt back of the seed is within a predetermined diameter range based on the melt back measurement.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the controller is further configured to adjust the temperature setting of the furnace when it is determined that the melt back of the seed is not within the predetermined diameter range.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the controller is further configured to cut the boule into a plurality of wafers when it is determined that the melt back of the seed is within the predetermined diameter range.

15. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined diameter range is from about 2.7 inches to about 3.1 inches.

16. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the controller is configured to adjust the temperature setting of the furnace based on the melt back measurement by:

determining whether the melt back of the seed is a predetermined diameter of about 2.9 inches based on the melt back measurement.

17. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine whether the boule has a determined crystallographic structure based on the melt back measurement.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine whether the boule has a monocrystalline structure based on the melt back measurement.

19. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the boule is one of a silicon boule and a sapphire crystal boule.

20. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the imaging device is further disposed below a support table on which the boule is disposed.
