Abstract

A device for detecting infrared radiation emanating from a subject while not in physical contact with the subject. The device includes a body, an infrared sensor located in the body oriented to receive the infrared radiation and to generate at least one output that corresponds to the received infrared radiation, an analog to digital converter in communication with the infrared sensor to receive the at least one output, a processor in communication with the analog to digital converter or infrared sensor to process an output of the analog to digital converter or the output of the infrared sensor, into a computed temperature of the subject, wherein the processor adjusts the computed temperature based on an emissivity of the subject, a memory module to store a first plurality of computed temperatures in a predetermined sequence; and a filter module to select a first maximum from among the first plurality of computed temperatures.

Claims (31)

1 . A device for detecting infrared radiation emanating from a subject while not in physical contact with the subject, comprising:

a body;

an infrared sensor located in the body oriented to receive the infrared radiation and to generate at least one output that corresponds to the received infrared radiation;

an analog to digital converter in communication with the infrared sensor to receive the at least one output;

a processor in communication with at least one of the analog to digital converter and the infrared sensor to process at least one of (a) an output of the analog to digital converter, and (b) the at least one output of the infrared sensor, into a computed temperature of the subject;

a memory module to store a first plurality of computed temperatures in a predetermined sequence;

a filter module to select a first maximum from among the first plurality of computed temperatures; and

wherein the processor adjusts the computed temperature based on an emissivity of the subject, the emissivity determined at least in part by a luminance value based at least in part on an image of the subject;

wherein the memory module stores a second plurality of computed temperatures in the predetermined sequence; and

wherein the processor constructs a first dataset that includes elements comprising the first maximum and the second plurality of computed temperatures and the filter module selects a second maximum from the first dataset; and

the device further comprising a display to show the temperature of the subject, the temperature based at least in part on the computed temperature.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the second maximum is characterized at least in part as being greater than or equal to an immediately preceding element in the first dataset and greater than or equal to an immediately subsequent element in the first dataset.

3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the memory module stores a third plurality of computed temperatures in the predetermined sequence.

4 . The device of claim 3 , wherein the processor constructs a second dataset that includes elements comprising the second maximum and the third plurality of computed temperatures and the filter module selects a third maximum from the second dataset.

5 . The device of claim 4 , wherein the third maximum is characterized at least in part as being greater than or equal to an immediately preceding element in the second dataset and greater than or equal to an immediately subsequent element in the second dataset.

6 . The device of claim 4 , wherein the temperature of the subject is based at least in part on at least one of the first maximum, the second maximum, and the third maximum.

7 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the display is located in the body.

8 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a camera located in the body to acquire an image of the subject.

9 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the display shows the image acquired by the camera.

10 . The device of claim 9 , wherein the display is located in the body.

11 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the processor is in communication with the camera and analyzes the acquired image to determine a proper alignment of the device relative to the subject.

12 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the processor is in communication with the camera and analyzes the acquired image to determine a color scheme of the subject.

13 . The device of claim 12 , wherein the temperature of the subject is based at least in part on the color scheme of the subject.

14 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a rangefinder located in the body to determine a distance between the device and the subject.

15 . The device of claim 14 , wherein the temperature of the subject is based at least in part on the distance between the device and the subject.

16 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a communication module located in the body in communication with the processor.

17 . The device of claim 16 , wherein the communication module transmits information associated with the subject to an external repository, wherein the information includes the temperature associated with the subject.

18 . The device of claim 16 , wherein the communication module receives data from an external source, wherein the data includes at least one of configuration data and data associated with the subject.

19 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor to determine ambient temperature.

20 . The device of claim 19 , wherein the sensor to determine ambient temperature is located in the body.

21 . The device of claim 19 , wherein the temperature of the subject is based at least in part on the ambient temperature.
