Sustainable system and method for removing and concentrating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water
A solvent purification system for removing carryover per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from a reclaimed solvent for reuse having carryover PFAS therein. The system includes a solvent purification subsystem coupled to a separation and recovery subsystem configured to receive the reclaimed solvent for reuse having carryover PFAS therein. The solvent purification system includes an anion exchange resin housed in a vessel configured to remove the carryover PFAS to provide a purified, reclaimed solvent for reuse.
1 . A system for removing carryover per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from a reclaimed solvent, the system comprising:
a regenerant solution comprising an alcohol, a salt, and water,
at least one regenerant solution makeup tank configured to receive the regenerant solution;
a separation and recovery subsystem configured to receive spent regenerant solution from an anion exchange vessel configured to remove PFAS from contaminated water, the separation and recovery subsystem including a distillation subsystem or an evaporation subsystem, one of the distillation subsystem or the evaporation subsystem configured to separate and output a reclaimed alcohol solvent having carryover PFAS therein;
a solvent purification subsystem coupled to the separation and recovery subsystem, the solvent purification subsystem configured to receive the reclaimed alcohol solvent, the solvent purification subsystem including an anion exchange resin housed in a vessel configured to remove the carryover PFAS to provide a purified, reclaimed solvent, and
a line coupled to the solvent purification subsystem configured to deliver the purified, reclaimed solvent to the regenerant solution makeup tank for reuse.
