Abstract

Various embodiments of a wagering ecosystem are described for allowing punters and other entities to buy and sell already-placed wagers. Allowing purchases and sales of already-placed wagers minimizes risk exposures while increasing the diversity, volume and efficiency of wagering. Generally, systems, apparatus and methods are described for an exchange server to execute buy and sell orders received from licensed entities to manage imbalances in the entities' books and to provide accounting for the executed orders.

Claims (75)

1. A licensed bookmaker server (LBS) located in a first jurisdiction for facilitating peer-to-peer wagering transactions, comprising:

a memory for storing processor-executable instructions;

a network interface for providing network communications with punters and a multi-jurisdiction exchange server; and

a processor, coupled to the memory and to the network interface, for executing the processor-executable instructions that causes the licensed bookmaker server to:

receive, by the processor via the network interface, an initial proposed wager (IPW) from a first punter within the first jurisdiction, the IPW comprising a predicted outcome of a proposition associated with an event and a wager amount;

provide, by the processor via the network interface, the IPW to other punters located in the first jurisdiction;

receive, by the processor via the network interface, an acceptance of the IPW from a second punter within the first jurisdiction;

in response to receiving the acceptance, create, by the processor, an exchange tradeable bet between the first punter and the second punter, wherein the first punter owns a first position in the exchange tradable bet and the second punter has a second position in the exchange tradable bet; and

notify, by the processor via the network interface, the first punter and the second punter that the exchange tradeable bet has been created.

2. The LBS of claim 1 , wherein the processor-executable instructions comprise further instructions that causes the LBS to:

receive, by the processor via the network interface, a first value from the first punter equal to the wager amount; and

receive, by the processor via the network interface, a second value from the second punter equal to the wager;

store, by the processor, the first value and the second value until the proposition has been resolved;

provide, by the processor, the second value to a first account owned by the first punter when the predicted outcome is achieved after the proposition has been resolved; and

provide, by the processor, the first value to a second account owned by the second punter when the predicted outcome is not achieved after the proposition has been resolved.

3. The LBS of claim 1 , wherein the processor-executable instructions comprise further instructions that causes the LBS to:

receive, by the processor via the network interface, a sell order from the first punter to sell the first punter's position in the exchange tradeable bet, the sell order comprising attributes of the IPW and an ask price for the first punter's first position in the exchange tradeable bet;

provide, by the processor via the network interface, the sell order to the other punters within the first jurisdiction; and

provide, by the processor via the network interface, the sell order to a multi-jurisdiction exchange server that processes numerous buy orders and numerous sell orders related to other exchange tradeable bets between punters located in jurisdictions other than the first jurisdiction.

4. The LBS of claim 3 , wherein the processor-executable instructions comprise further instructions that causes the LBS to:

receive, by the processor via the network interface, a buy order from a third punter located within the first jurisdiction, the buy order comprising an identification of the exchange tradable bet and a bid price; and

execute, by the processor, a transaction between the first punter and the third punter when the bid price is equal or greater than the ask price, wherein the transaction comprises the processor providing a credit to the first punter in an amount of the ask price and modifying ownership of the first position of the exchange tradable bet from the first punter to the third punter.

5. The LBS of claim 4 , wherein the processor-executable instructions that cause the LBS to provide a credit to the first punter comprises instructions that causes the LBS to:

receive, by the processor via the network interface, a value from the third punter equal to the ask price; and

provide, by the processor, the value to an account owned by the first punter.

6. The LBS of claim 3 , wherein the processor-executable instructions comprise further instructions that causes the LBS to:

receive, by the processor via the network interface, a notification from the multi-jurisdiction exchange server that a buy order was received by the multi-jurisdiction exchange server from a third punter located within a second jurisdiction, the buy order comprising an identification of the exchange tradable bet and a bid price; and

execute, by the processor, a transaction between the first punter and the third punter when the bid price is equal or greater than the ask price, wherein the transaction comprises the processor providing a credit to the first punter in an amount of the ask price and modifying ownership of the first position of the exchange tradable bet from the first punter to the third punter.

7. The LBS of claim 6 , wherein the processor-executable instructions comprise further instructions that causes the LBS to:

receive, by the processor via the network interface, a first value from the first punter equal to the wager amount;

receive, by the processor via the network interface, a second value from the second punter equal to the wager amount;

store, by the processor, the first value and the second value until the proposition has been resolved;

provide, by the processor, the first value and the second value to an account of the third punter when the predicted outcome is achieved after the proposition has been resolved; and

provide, by the processor, the first value and the second value to an account of the second punter when the predicted outcome is not achieved after the proposition has been resolved.

8. The LBS of claim 6 , wherein the processor-executable instructions comprise further instructions that causes the LBS to:

create, by the processor via the network interface, a plurality of exchange tradeable bets based on receipt of a plurality of IPWs received from a plurality of punters within the first jurisdiction;

receive, by the processor via the network interface, a plurality of buy orders and sell orders to buy and sell positions associated with the plurality of exchange tradeable bets;

match, by the processor, the buy orders with the sell orders when a respective ask price of each sell order matches a respective bid price of each buy order; and

provide, by the processor via the network interface, any of the plurality of buy orders and the plurality of sell orders that have not been matched by the processor to the multi-jurisdiction exchange server for matching by the multi-jurisdiction exchange server with buy orders and sell orders received by the multi-jurisdiction exchange server from punters located in jurisdictions other than the first jurisdiction.

9. A method, performed by a licensed bookmaker server (LBS) located in a first jurisdiction for facilitating peer-to-peer wagering transactions, comprising:

receiving, by a processor of the LBS via a network interface coupled to the processor, an initial proposed wager (IPW) from a first punter within the first jurisdiction, the IPW comprising a predicted outcome of a proposition associated with an event and a wager amount;

providing, by the processor via the network interface, the IPW to other punters located in the first jurisdiction;

receiving, by the processor via the network interface, an acceptance of the IPW from a second punter within the first jurisdiction;

in response to receiving the acceptance, creating, by the processor, an exchange tradeable bet between the first punter and the second punter, wherein the first punter owns a first position in the exchange tradable bet and the second punter owns a second position in the exchange tradable bet; and

notifying, by the processor via the network interface, the first punter and the second punter that the exchange tradeable bet has been created.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the processor-executable instructions comprise further instructions that causes the LBS to:

receiving, by the processor via the network interface, a first value from the first punter equal to the wager amount; and

receiving, by the processor via the network interface, a second value from the second punter equal to the wager;

storing, by the processor, the first value and the second value until the proposition has been resolved;

providing, by the processor, the first value and the second value to a first account owned by the first punter when the predicted outcome is achieved after the proposition has been resolved; and
