Abstract

A method and apparatus are provided for sorting or retrieving items to/from a plurality of destinations areas. The items are loaded onto one of a plurality of independently controlled delivery vehicles. The delivery vehicles follow a track that guides the delivery vehicles to/from the destination areas, which are positioned along the track. Once at the appropriate destination area, an item is transferred between the delivery vehicle and the destination area.

Claims (17)

1. A method for storing and retrieving items in a material handling system having a first track adjacent a plurality of storage locations and a second track spaced apart from the first track to form an aisle between the first track and the second track, comprising the steps of:

driving a plurality of vehicles within the aisle along the first track and the second track to store items in the storage locations and retrieve items from the storage locations, wherein the step of driving the plurality of vehicles comprises the step of:

driving a first of the delivery along the first track and the second track to a first one of the storage locations wherein the step of driving comprises driving the first vehicle vertically;

transferring a first of the items from the first storage location onto the first vehicle;

driving the first vehicle with the first item from the first storage location to an output station positioned along the aisle;

driving the first vehicle upwardly as the first vehicle approaches the output station;

stopping the first vehicle at the output station to present the first item for removal from the first vehicle;

driving the first vehicle vertically upwardly from the output station after the first item is removed from the first vehicle.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first and second tracks curve away from the output station so that the step of driving the first vehicle vertically upwardly from the output station comprises the step of driving the first vehicle laterally and then vertically upwardly away from the output station.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the output station is disposed at an end of the aisle and the step of driving the first vehicle with the first item from the first storage location to an output station comprises driving the first vehicle to the end of the aisle.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of driving a first of the delivery along the first track and the second track to a first one of the storage locations comprises driving the vehicle in a vertical direction of travel and a horizontal direction of travel and wherein the vehicle engages the first and second tracks so that the vehicle maintains a substantially horizontal orientation as the vehicles move between vertical and horizontal directions of travel.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the first vehicle comprises a first side and a second side and wherein the step of driving a first of the delivery along the first track and the second track comprises the steps of engaging a first driving element on the first side with the first track and engaging a second driving element on the second side with the second track.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein a second storage location is located along the second track, wherein the method includes the step of driving the first vehicle to the second storage location after the step of driving the first vehicle vertically upwardly from the output station.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of transferring a first of the plurality of items comprises transferring a first container containing the first item and a second item.

8. The method of claim 7 comprising the step of transferring the first container with the second item from the first vehicle to the second storage location.

9. The method of claim 8 comprising the step of transferring the second item onto a second vehicle at the second storage location.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of stopping the first vehicle at the output station to present the first item for removal comprises raising a rearward end of the first vehicle upwardly relative to a forward end of the first vehicle.
