Abstract

Device assisted CDR creation, aggregation, mediation and billing is provided. In some embodiments, device assisted CDR creation, aggregation, mediation and billing for a wireless network includes collecting device generated service usage information for one or more devices in wireless communication on the wireless network; and providing the device generated service usage information in a syntax (e.g., a device assisted charging data record (CDR)) and a communication protocol (e.g., 3GPP, 3GPP2, or other communication protocols) that can be used by other network devices to augment or replace network generated service usage information for the one or more devices in wireless communication on the wireless network.

Claims (39)

1. A network device of a wireless network, the network device comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor and configured to provide the processor with instructions;

the processor configured to execute the instructions to:

securely communicate through a communication channel with a service processor of a wireless device operating on the wireless network;

obtain, from the service processor over the communication channel, device-generated wireless network service usage data, the device-generated wireless network service usage data comprising a first service usage data associated with a first application on the wireless device and a second service usage data associated with a second application on the wireless device;

generate a first charging data records (CDR) for the wireless device relating to the first service usage data associated with the first application on the wireless device;

generate a second CDR for the wireless device relating to the second service usage data associated with the second application on the wireless device; and

communicate the first CDR and the second CDR to a wireless network operator.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first service usage data include a content type.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first service usage data is chargeable to an entity other than a subscriber associated with the wireless device.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first service usage data is associate with a first transaction code and the second service usage data is associate with a second transaction code.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

verify the device-generated wireless network service usage data.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

mediate the first CDR and the second CDR with the device-generated wireless network service usage data.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein mediating the first CDR and the second CDR with the device-generated wireless network service usage data comprises offsetting a bulk service usage measure from a network-generated CDR based on the device-generated wireless network service usage data.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless network comprises a billing server.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the first service usage data is subsidized by an entity other than the wireless network operator.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

apply a service policy based on the first service usage data associated with the first application, wherein the service policy includes throttling data usage by the first application.

11. A method for use by a network device of a wireless network, the method comprising:

securely communicating through a communication channel with a service processor of a wireless device operating on the wireless network;

obtaining, from the service processor over the communication channel, device-generated wireless network service usage data, the device-generated wireless network service usage data comprising a first service usage data associated with a first application on the wireless device and a second service usage data associated with a second application on the wireless device;

generating a first charging data records (CDR) for the wireless device relating to the first service usage data associated with the first application on the wireless device;

generating a second CDR for the wireless device relating to the second service usage data associated with the second application on the wireless device; and

communicating the first CDR and the second CDR to a wireless network operator.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first service usage data include a content type.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first service usage data is chargeable to an entity other than a subscriber associated with the wireless device.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first service usage data is associate with a first transaction code and the second service usage data is associate with a second transaction code.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

verifying the device-generated wireless network service usage data.

16. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

mediating the first CDR and the second CDR with the device-generated wireless network service usage data.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein mediating the first CDR and the second CDR with the device-generated wireless network service usage data comprises offsetting a bulk service usage measure from a network-generated CDR based on the device-generated wireless network service usage data.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the wireless network comprises a billing server.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least a portion of the first service usage data is subsidized by an entity other than the wireless network operator.

20. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

applying a service policy based on the first service usage data associated with the first application, wherein the service policy includes throttling data usage by the first application.
