Abstract

A map-based graphical user interface (GUI) for a social media platform provides a map window that displays an interactive map that is movable within the map window responsive to user input. User icons for respective friend users of a user associated with a client device on which the map-based GUI is generated are displayed in the map window at respective locations on the interactive map. A predefined portion of the map window defines a focus area. Context information for respective friend users are automatically surface for those friend icons located within the focus area, while such context information are automatically omitted or de-surfaced for those friend icons outside of the focus area.

Claims (45)

1 . A method comprising:

causing on-screen presentation on a client device of a map-based GUI comprising a map viewport within which an interactive map is movable responsive to user map navigation input to change a particular represented map area displayed within the map viewport;

receiving a user input that custom-defines a map viewport focus area for auto-surfacing context information, the map viewport focus area being fixed in on-screen position within the map viewport to move with the map viewport relative to the interactive map responsive to a user map navigation input, wherein the user input that custom-defines the map viewport focus area comprises customization in one or more of size and shape;

causing display of a plurality of user icons at respective display locations on the interactive map, each of the plurality of user icons representing a respective one of a plurality of users, the display location of a particular one of the plurality of user icons being situated outside of the map viewport focus area, the map viewport focus area being located at a fixed on-screen position;

receiving a user-controlled movement of the interactive map that brings the particular user icon into the map viewport focus area;

responsive to receiving the user-controlled movement of the interactive map that brings the particular user icon into the map viewport focus area, automatically surfacing previously undisplayed context information for the particular user icon, wherein the surfacing of the context information comprises presenting an animation that displays a growing text bubble;

receiving a subsequent user-controlled movement of the interactive map, causing the particular user icon to be brought out of the map viewport focus area; and

responsive to the particular user icon being brought out of the map viewport focus area during the subsequent user-controlled movement of the interactive map, dynamically desurfacing said context information for the particular user icon, wherein the desurfacing of the context information comprises presentation of an animation that shrinks said text bubble,

wherein dynamic surfacing and desurfacing of context information is continuously provided for each of the plurality of user icons such that, at any given instance:

each user icon of the plurality of user icons whose respective on-screen display location is inside the map viewport focus area is displayed with context information; and

each user icon of the plurality of user icons located on-screen whose respective on-screen display location is outside of the map viewport focus area is displayed without context information.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the client device is a mobile device with a touchscreen on which the map viewport is provided as a full-screen display, the map viewport focus area being predefined as a central portion of the full-screen display customizable in one or more of size and shape.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user input that custom defines the map viewport focus area comprises free-form user input.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the automatically surfaced context information includes a user identifier for the particular user associated with the user icon.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the automatically surfaced context information includes timing data indicating time elapsed since generation of respective location information on which the display location of the associated user icon is based.

6 . A system comprising:

one or more computer processor devices; and

a memory storing instructions that, when executed by one or more computer processors, configure the system to perform operations comprising:

causing on-screen presentation on a client device of a map-based GUI comprising a map viewport within which an interactive map is movable responsive to user map navigation input to change a particular represented map area displayed within the map viewport;

receiving a user input that custom-defines a map viewport focus area for auto-surfacing context information,

the map viewport focus area being fixed in on-screen position within the map viewport to move with the map viewport relative to the interactive map responsive to a user map navigation input, wherein the user input that custom-defines map viewport focus area comprises customization in one or more of size and shape;

causing display of a plurality of user icons at respective display locations on the interactive map, each of the plurality of user icons representing a respective one of a plurality of users, the display location of a particular one of the plurality of user icons being situated outside of the map viewport focus area, the map viewport focus area being located at a fixed on-screen position;

receiving a user-controlled movement of the interactive map that brings the particular user icon into the map viewport focus area;

responsive to receiving the user-controlled movement of the interactive map that brings the particular user icon into the map viewport focus area, automatically surfacing previously undisplayed context information for the particular user icon, wherein the surfacing of the context information comprises presenting an animation that displays a growing text bubble;

receiving a subsequent user-controlled movement of the interactive map, causing the particular user icon to be brought out of the map viewport focus area; and

responsive to the particular user icon being brought out of the map viewport focus area during the subsequent user-controlled movement of the interactive map, dynamically desurfacing said context information for the particular user icon, wherein the desurfacing of the context information comprises presentation of an animation that shrinks said text bubble,

wherein the dynamic surfacing and desurfacing of context information is continuously provided for each of the plurality of user icons such that, at any given instance:

each user icon of the plurality of user icons whose respective on-screen display location is inside the map viewport focus area is displayed with context information; and

each user icon of the plurality of user icons located on-screen whose respective on-screen display location is outside of the map viewport focus area is displayed without context information.

7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the client device is a mobile device with a touchscreen on which the map viewport is provided as a full-screen display, the map viewport focus area being predefined as a central portion of the full-screen display customizable in one or more of size and shape.

8 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the instructions further configure the system such that the user input defining the map viewport focus area comprises free-form user input.

9 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the automatically surfaced context information includes a user identifier for the particular user associated with the user icon.

10 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the automatically surfaced context information includes timing data indicating time elapsed since generation of respective location information on which the display location of the associated user icon is based.

11 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, the computer-readable storage medium including instructions that when executed by a computer, cause the computer to perform operations comprising:

causing on-screen presentation on a client device of a map-based GUI comprising a map viewport within which an interactive map is movable responsive to user map navigation input to change a particular represented map area displayed within the map viewport;

receiving a user input that custom-defines a map viewport focus area for auto-surfacing context information,

the map viewport focus area being fixed in on-screen position within the map viewport to move with the map viewport relative to the interactive map responsive to a user map navigation input, wherein the user input that custom-defines the map viewport focus area comprises customization in one or more of size and shape;

causing display of a plurality of user icons at respective display locations on the interactive map, each of the plurality of user icons representing a respective one of a plurality of users, the display location of a particular one of the plurality of user icons being situated outside of the map viewport focus area, the map viewport focus area being located at a fixed on-screen position;

receiving a user-controlled movement of the interactive map that brings the particular user icon into the map viewport focus area;

responsive to receiving the user-controlled movement of the interactive map that brings the particular user icon into the map viewport focus area, automatically surfacing previously undisplayed context information for the particular user icon, wherein the surfacing of the context information comprises presenting an animation that displays a growing text bubble;

receiving a subsequent user-controlled movement of the interactive map, causing the particular user icon to be brought out of the map viewport focus area; and

responsive to the particular user icon being brought out of the map viewport focus area during the subsequent user-controlled movement of the interactive map, dynamically desurfacing said context information for the user icon, wherein the desurfacing of the context information comprises presentation of an animation that shrinks said text bubble,

wherein the dynamic surfacing and desurfacing of context information is continuously provided for each of the plurality of user icons such that, at any given instance:

each user icon of the plurality of user icons whose respective on-screen display location is inside the map viewport focus area is displayed with context information; and

each user icon of the plurality of user icons located on-screen whose respective on-screen display location is outside of the map viewport focus area is displayed without context information.
