Abstract

A method and apparatus are provided for presenting multimedia content to a caller and/or a called party in association with a telephone call. Content may be presented pre-ring (before the called party's telephone rings), in-call, and/or post-call. Content presented to a party may be related to another party participating in the call or may be related to a third party (e.g., an advertiser that paid for the ability to have its content presented). Presented content may be actuable, to allow a caller to change the destination of a call, take advantage of an offer presented to him or her, redeem a coupon, schedule or queue a subsequent call, etc. To find a desired destination party, a caller may initiate a manual or automatic search of his or her local contacts (on his telephone) and/or a central or global directory or contact list.

Claims (87)

1. A method of facilitating content sharing, comprising:

receiving notification of initiation of a communication connection from a first device to a second device;

pausing the communication connection without soliciting action by a first operator of the first device;

during said pausing, selecting content identified by a second operator of the second device;

causing the first device to present the selected content;

receiving, from the second device, a signal indicating that the second operator desires to add the first operator to a contact list;

retrieving a contact card corresponding to the first operator; and

forwarding the contact card to the second device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, after the communication connection is established:

obtaining an updated version of the selected content; and

causing the first device to present the updated selected content.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

causing one or more of the selected content and the updated selected content to be displayed on the second device.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein one or more of the selected content and the updated selected content are displayed on the second device while displayed on the first device.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, prior to said selecting:

receiving identification of one or more content items to share with the first operator, including a first content item; and

receiving either the first content item or a location of the first content item;

wherein the selected content comprises the first content item.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first content item is presented on the second device while it is presented on the first device.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, prior to said selecting:

receiving identification of a social networking site to which the second operator belongs;

accessing one or more content items of the social networking site associated with the first operator, including a first content item; and

receiving either the first content item or a location of the first content item;

wherein the selected content comprises the first content item.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first content item is presented on the second device while it is presented on the first device.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, prior to said selecting:

querying the second device for content; and

receiving either a first content item or a location of a first content item;

wherein the selected content comprises the first content item.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

further selecting content identified by the first operator; and

causing the further selected content to be presented on the second device.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

the selected content comprises content displayed on the first device at the time of initiation of the communication connection; or

the further selected content comprises content displayed on the second device at the time of initiation of the communication connection.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein pausing the communication connection comprises:

transmitting a signal to the first device;

wherein, in response to receipt of the signal, the first device pauses creation of the communication connection.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the communication connection is a call; and

pausing the communication connection comprises instructing the first device to pause dialing of the call.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein pausing the communication connection comprises:

transmitting a signal to a call server associated with the first device;

wherein, in response to receipt of the signal, the call server pauses creation of the communication connection.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform a method of facilitating content sharing, the method comprising:

receiving notification of initiation of a communication connection from a first device to a second device;

pausing the communication connection without soliciting action by a first operator of the first device;

during said pausing, selecting content identified by a second operator of the second device;

causing the first device to present the selected content;

receiving, from the second device, a signal indicating that the second operator desires to add the first operator to a contact list;

retrieving a contact card corresponding to the first operator; and

forwarding the contact card to the second device.

16. Apparatus for facilitating content sharing, the apparatus comprising:

one or more processors; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the apparatus to:

receive notification of initiation of a communication connection from a first device to a second device;

pause the communication connection without soliciting action by a first operator of the first device;

during said pausing, select content identified by a second operator of the second device;

cause the first device to present the selected content;

receive, from the second device, a signal indicating that the second operator desires to add the first operator to a contact list;

retrieve a contact card corresponding to the first operator; and

forward the contact card to the second device.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the apparatus to:

obtain an updated version of the selected content; and

cause the first device to present the updated selected content.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the apparatus to:

cause one or more of the selected content and the updated selected content to be displayed on the second device.

19. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein one or more of the selected content and the updated selected content are displayed on the second device while displayed on the first device.

20. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the apparatus to, prior to said selecting:

receive identification of one or more content items to share with the first operator, including a first content item; and

receive either the first content item or a location of the first content item;

wherein the selected content comprises the first content item.

21. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the apparatus to, prior to said selecting:

receive identification of a social networking site to which the second operator belongs;

access one or more content items of the social networking site associated with the first operator, including a first content item; and

receive either the first content item or a location of the first content item;

wherein the selected content comprises the first content item.

22. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the apparatus to, prior to said selecting:

query the second device for content; and

receive either a first content item or a location of a first content item;

wherein the selected content comprises the first content item.

23. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the apparatus to:

further select content identified by the first operator; and

cause the further selected content to be presented on the second device.

24. The apparatus of claim 23 , wherein:

the selected content comprises content displayed on the first device at the time of initiation of the communication connection; or

the further selected content comprises content displayed on the second device at the time of initiation of the communication connection.
