Abstract

A system is disclosed that includes an interface which receives sensor information associated with a vehicle, a severing tool, a parachute load limiting device state controller, and a reefing device. The controller determines, based at least in part on the sensor information, whether to instruct the severing tool to release a reefing device prior to parachute deployment. If it is determined to instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment, the severing tool is so instructed. If it is determined to not instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment, the reefing device is configured to be situated around a parachute canopy to constrain the parachute canopy during an initial state and slide down the parachute canopy to a position below the parachute canopy to constrain one or more parachute tethers.

in the event it is determined to instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment, instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment; and

the reefing device, wherein in the event it is determined to not instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment, the reefing device is configured to:

be situated around a parachute canopy to constrain the parachute canopy during an initial state; and

slide down the parachute canopy to a position below the parachute canopy to constrain one or more parachute tethers.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the sensor information includes a vehicle altitude associated with the vehicle; and

determining whether to instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment is based at least in part on the vehicle altitude.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the sensor information includes a vehicle speed associated with the vehicle; and

determining whether to instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment is based at least in part on the vehicle speed.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the sensor information includes: (1) a vehicle altitude associated with the vehicle and (2) a vehicle speed associated with the vehicle; and

determining whether to instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment includes:

determining whether the vehicle altitude exceeds an altitude threshold; and

determining whether the vehicle speed exceeds a speed threshold, wherein in the event it is determined that (1) the vehicle altitude does not exceed the altitude threshold and (2) the vehicle speed does not exceed the speed threshold, it is determined to instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein instructing the severing tool to release the reefing device includes instructing the severing tool to cut a line that holds the reefing device in place around the parachute canopy.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein instructing the severing tool to release the reefing device includes instructing the severing tool to cut the reefing device.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein instructing the severing tool to release the reefing device includes instructing the severing tool to cut the reefing device using a U-shaped device that includes a blade.

8. A method, comprising:

providing an interface that is configured to receive sensor information associated with a vehicle;

providing a severing tool;

providing a parachute load limiting device state controller that is configured to:

determine, based at least in part on the sensor information, whether to instruct the severing tool to release a reefing device prior to parachute deployment; and

in the event it is determined to instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment, instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment; and

providing the reefing device, wherein in the event it is determined to not instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment, the reefing device is configured to:

be situated around a parachute canopy to constrain the parachute canopy during an initial state; and

slide down the parachute canopy to a position below the parachute canopy to constrain one or more parachute tethers.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the sensor information includes a vehicle altitude associated with the vehicle; and

determining whether to instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment is based at least in part on the vehicle altitude.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the sensor information includes a vehicle speed associated with the vehicle; and

determining whether to instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment is based at least in part on the vehicle speed.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the sensor information includes: (1) a vehicle altitude associated with the vehicle and (2) a vehicle speed associated with the vehicle; and

determining whether to instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment includes:

determining whether the vehicle altitude exceeds an altitude threshold; and

determining whether the vehicle speed exceeds a speed threshold, wherein in the event it is determined that (1) the vehicle altitude does not exceed the altitude threshold and (2) the vehicle speed does not exceed the speed threshold, it is determined to instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein instructing the severing tool to release the reefing device includes instructing the severing tool to cut a line that holds the reefing device in place around the parachute canopy.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein instructing the severing tool to release the reefing device includes instructing the severing tool to cut the reefing device.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein instructing the severing tool to release the reefing device includes instructing the severing tool to cut the reefing device using a U-shaped device that includes a blade.

15. A system, comprising:

an interface configured to receive sensor information associated with a vehicle; and

a processor coupled to the interface and configured to:

determine, based at least in part on the sensor information, whether to instruct a severing tool to release a reefing device prior to parachute deployment; and

in the event it is determined to instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment, instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment, wherein in the event it is determined to not instruct the severing tool to release the reefing device prior to the parachute deployment, the reefing device is configured to:
