Abstract

Electrosurgical devices including a shaft, a handle and a distal end portion. The distal end portion is formed of an electrically conductive material and includes an electrically insulating material covering a substantial portion of the distal end portion and leaving an exposed portion which acts as an active electrode for delivery of electrical energy to tissue. A conduit in the shaft extending to an opening in the distal end portion facilitates aspiration of tissue and may provide suction simultaneous with delivery of electrical energy. Systems include an electrosurgical device, a source of electrical energy and may optionally include a source of suction and/or a source of fluid delivery or irrigation.

Claims (41)

1 . An electrosurgical device for cutting tissue comprising:

a handle;

a shaft having a longitudinal axis, a distal portion and a proximal portion opposite the distal portion, the distal portion with a distal end portion having a distal edge with a cutting surface and a fluid delivery conduit extending through the shaft, the distal edge substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis;

a first concave surface extending proximally from the distal edge along the longitudinal axis and terminating at a raised edge to define an arcuate ledge, the raised edge comprising an exposed electrosurgical cutting surface;

first and second arcuate edges defining lateral edges of the arcuate ledge of the first concave surface;

a second concave surface separate and distinct from the first concave surface, the second concave surface arranged proximally the first concave surface along the longitudinal axis;

an electrical connector configured to associate the electrosurgical device to an electrical energy source; and

a single opening in the distal end portion in fluid communication with the fluid delivery conduit, wherein the second concave surface includes the opening.

2 . The electrosurgical device of claim 1 , wherein the electrical energy source comprises monopolar radiofrequency energy.

3 . The electrosurgical device of claim 2 , further comprising a second connector configured to couple the electrosurgical device with a suction source.

4 . The electrosurgical device of claim 1 , further comprising an electrical insulation layer coating at least a portion of the distal portion.

5 . The electrosurgical device of claim 4 , wherein the shaft having the distal portion with the distal edge further includes a distal most edge, the distal most edge being coated with the electrical insulation layer.

6 . The electrosurgical device of claim 4 , wherein a proximal edge of the second concave surface is not coated with the electrical insulation layer such that the proximal edge is exposed and comprises an electrode configured to deliver electrical energy to the tissue.

7 . The electrosurgical device of claim 1 , wherein the shaft is removably attached to the handle.

8 . An electrosurgical device for cutting tissue comprising:

a handle;

a shaft having a longitudinal axis, the shaft including a distal portion with a distal end portion having a distal most edge with a cutting surface that is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the distal end portion including a fluid delivery conduit extending therethrough, the distal most edge being substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis;

a first concave surface extending proximally from the distal most edge along the longitudinal axis and terminating at a raised edge to define an arcuate ledge, the raised edge comprising an exposed electrosurgical cutting surface;

first and second arcuate edges defining lateral edges of the arcuate ledge of the first concave surface;

a second concave surface separate and distinct from the first concave surface, the second concave surface arranged proximally the first concave surface along the longitudinal axis;

an electrical insulation layer coating at least a portion of the distal end portion;

an electrical connector configured to associate the electrosurgical device to an electrical energy source; and

a single opening in the distal end portion in fluid communication with the fluid delivery conduit, wherein the second concave surface includes the opening.

9 . The electrosurgical device of claim 8 , wherein the arcuate ledge is configured to cut tissue along the distal most edge as the electrosurgical device is advanced distally and is configured to cut tissue along the raised edge as the electrosurgical device is retracted proximally relative to the longitudinal axis.

10 . The electrosurgical device of claim 8 , wherein the electrical insulation layer coats at least 99% of the distal end portion.

11 . The electrosurgical device of claim 8 , wherein the fluid delivery conduit is configured to fluidly associate the distal end portion with a suction source.

12 . The electrosurgical device of claim 11 , further comprising:

third and fourth arcuate edges defining lateral edges of the second concave surface.

13 . The electrosurgical device of claim 8 , wherein the electrical energy source comprises monopolar radiofrequency energy.

14 . The electrosurgical device of claim 8 , wherein the first and second arcuate edges of the distal end portion are not coated with the electrical insulation layer such that the first and second arcuate edges are exposed and comprise electrodes configured to deliver electrical energy to the tissue.

15 . The electrosurgical device of claim 14 , wherein at least the first and second exposed arcuate edges are electrically isolated from one another and comprise separate and independent bipolar electrodes, wherein the electrical energy source comprises bipolar electrical energy.

16 . The electrosurgical device of claim 15 , wherein the shaft is removably coupled to the handle.

17 . An electrosurgical device for cutting tissue comprising:

a handle;

a shaft having a longitudinal axis and defining an exterior surface, the shaft including a distal end portion with a distal most edge having a cutting surface, the distal end portion including a fluid delivery conduit extending therethrough, the distal most edge being substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis;

a first concave surface extending proximally from the distal most edge along the longitudinal axis and terminating at a raised edge to define an arcuate ledge, the raised edge comprising an exposed electrosurgical cutting surface;

first and second arcuate edges defining lateral edges of the arcuate ledge of the first concave surface;

a second concave surface separate and distinct from the first concave surface, the second concave surface arranged proximally the first concave surface along the longitudinal axis;

an electrical insulation layer coating at least a portion of the distal end portion except at least the distal most edge of the distal end portion such that the distal most edge is exposed;

an electrical connector in communication with an electrical energy source and coupled with the electrosurgical device; and

a single opening in the distal end portion in fluid communication with the fluid delivery conduit, wherein the opening is on the second concave surface.
