Abstract

Catheter apparatuses, systems, and methods for achieving renal neuromodulation by intravascular access are disclosed herein. One aspect of the present technology, for example, is directed to a treatment device having a multi-electrode array configured to be delivered to a renal blood vessel. The array is selectively transformable between a delivery or low-profile state (e.g., a generally straight shape) and a deployed state (e.g., a radially expanded, generally helical shape). The multi-electrode array is sized and shaped so that the electrodes or energy delivery elements contact an interior wall of the renal blood vessel when the array is in the deployed (e.g., helical) state. The electrodes or energy delivery elements are configured for direct and/or indirect application of thermal and/or electrical energy to heat or otherwise electrically modulate neural fibers that contribute to renal function or of vascular structures that feed or perfuse the neural fibers.

Claims (20)

1. A catheter for treatment of a human patient via renal denervation, the catheter apparatus comprising:

a handle assembly;

a tubular elongate shaft extending from a distal end to a proximal end slidably disposed within the handle assembly;

an elongate control member slidably disposed within the tubular elongate shaft and having—

a proximal end protruding from the elongate shaft proximal end and fixedly attached within the handle assembly; and

a distal region protruding from the elongate shaft distal end and extending along a central axis; and

a helical support structure having—

a plurality of energy delivery elements carried thereon including at least a first energy delivery element and a second energy delivery element axially and radially spaced from one another about the control member;

a delivery state and a deployed state;

a proximal end coupled to the elongate shaft distal end; and

an elongate form wrapped about the control member distal region; and

a distal end coupled to the control member distal region such that the support structure distal end remains at a fixed distance from the handle assembly;

wherein—

proximal movement of the elongate shaft relative to the control member places the helical support structure in the delivery state; and

distal movement of the elongate shaft relative to the control member places the helical support structure in the deployed state.

2. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the support structure comprises an elongate tube.

3. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the elongate shaft proximal end is coupled to an actuator cooperatively associated with the handle assembly such that manual operation of the actuator effects axial translation of the elongate shaft relative to the control member.

4. The catheter of claim 3 wherein the actuator is a slider-in-groove type, a pivot type, or a gear type.

5. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the control member comprises a tubular member defining a central lumen, and the central lumen is configured to receive a guide wire.

6. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the control member comprises a stylet.
