Abstract

A system and method for control of prescription drug packaging and dispensing machines located in an in-patient health care facility including centralized control and enhanced communication between system components. Delay and errors in processing item data in the prescription dispensing system are reduced by using concise ID data incorporated into each canister memory chip and storing canister contents data elsewhere. Canisters are configured in a pharmacy using interchangeable parts. Data being processed is synchronized by a combination of user tokens (who), data identifiers (what), and unique Ids for the entities in the system (where). The foregoing combination enables substantial efficiency improvements and error reduction.

Claims (63)

1. A medication dispensing system for use with initiating and tracking packaging and dispensation of medications to individual patients, the medication dispensing system comprising:

a first automated medication packaging and dispensing machine (ADM) comprising a plurality of canisters, wherein the plurality of canisters include one or more canisters coded for a particular medication, the first ADM configured to:

release at least a first medication associated with a first dispensing request associated with at least a first electronic record, wherein at least one canister of the plurality of canisters is coded for at least the first medication;

generate a first identifier for a first package, wherein the first identifier is specific to the first dispensing request and comprises information associated with at least the first electronic record;

package at least the first medication for a first patient into the first package that includes the first identifier; and

dispense the first package comprising at least the first medication for the first patient;

a processing circuit having at least one processor communicably coupled to at least one memory, the processing circuit communicably coupled to the first ADM via a communication network, the processing circuit configured to:

update at least the first electronic record associated with the first patient to indicate that at least the first medication was packaged and dispensed in accordance with the first dispensing request, wherein updating at least the first electronic record comprises recording a time at least the first medication was dispensed, and recording information of a first individual that initiated the packaging and dispensing of at least the first medication; and

store the update of at least the first electronic record.

2. The medication dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuit of the medication dispensing system is further configured to:

receive, from an order management system (OMS), a dispensation action of at least the first medication, wherein the OMS is communicably coupled via a distributed network with the processing circuit; and

receive, from the OMS, an administration action of at least the first medication to the first patient.

3. The medication dispensing system of claim 2 , wherein the medication dispensing system is located at a first facility and the OMS is located at a second facility, and wherein the first facility is at least one of a healthcare facility, a home, a prison, or a retail facility.

4. The medication dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuit of the medication dispensing system is further configured to:

receiving, from the first patient, a dispensation action of at least the first medication; and

receiving, from the first patient, an administration action of at least the first medication.

The medication dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the first ADM is located at a first facility and the processing circuit is located at a second facility, and wherein the second facility is at least one of a healthcare facility, a home, a prison, or a retail facility, and wherein the first individual is at least one the first patient or a health care worker.

6. The medication dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuit of the medication dispensing system is further configured to:

receive information of the first identifier associated with the first package; and

wherein updating at least the first electronic record associated with the first patient further includes indicating that the packaged and dispensed first medication was administered to the first patient, wherein updating at least the first electronic record comprises recording a time at least the first medication was administered, and recording information of a second individual that initiated the administration of the packaged and dispensed first medication.

7. The medication dispensing system of claim 6 , wherein receiving information of the first identifier further includes receiving, from an input device of the first ADM, an input of the first identifier, wherein the input is at least one of a scan input or a manual input.

8. The medication dispensing system of claim 7 , wherein the scan input is received from an electronic medication administration record (eMAR) device, and wherein the eMAR device is communicably coupled with the processing circuit.

9. The medication dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the first ADM of the medication dispensing system is further configured to:

release a second medication associated with a second dispensing request associated with a second electronic record, wherein at least one canister is coded for the second medication;

generates a second label for a second package, wherein the second label is specific to the second dispensing request and comprises information for updating the second electronic record;

in response to releasing the second medication, package the second medication for a second patient into the second package, wherein packaging comprises printing the second label on the second package; and

in response to packaging the second medication, dispense the second package comprising the second medication for the second patient, where the second label associates the packaged and dispensed second medication with the second patient.

10. The medication dispensing system of claim 9 , wherein the processing circuit of the medication dispensing system is further configured to:

in response to dispensing the second package, update the second electronic record associated with the second patient to indicate that the second medication was packaged and dispensed in accordance with the second dispensing request, wherein updating the second electronic record comprises recording a time the second medication was dispensed, and recording information of a first health care professional initiating the packaging and dispensing of the second medication;

receive a scan of the second label associated with the second package;

in response to receiving the scan of the second label, update the second electronic record associated with the second patient to indicate that the packaged and dispensed second medication was administered to the second patient, wherein updating the second electronic record comprises recording a time the second medication was administered, and recording information of a second health care professional initiating the administration of the packaged and dispensed second medication; and

store the update of the second electronic record.

11. The medication dispensing system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second automated medication packaging and dispensing machine (ADM) comprising a plurality of canisters, wherein each canister of the plurality of canisters is coded for a medication, the second ADM configured to:

release a third medication associated with a third dispensing request associated with a third electronic record, wherein at least one canister is coded for the third medication;

generates a third label for a third package, wherein the third label is specific to the third dispensing request and comprises information for updating the third electronic record;

in response to releasing the third medication, package the third medication for a third patient into the third package, wherein packaging comprises printing the third label on the third package; and

in response to packaging the third medication, dispense the third package comprising the third medication for the third patient, where the third label associates the packaged and dispensed third medication with the third patient.

The medication dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein packaging comprises providing the first identifier on the first package, and wherein the first identifier comprises at least one of a bar code, an optical code, a label, a printed element, an identifier, a badge, a magnetic element, and a readable image, and wherein at least the first medication is at least one of an individual pill, an individual tablet, an individual caplet, or an individual capsule.

The medication dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein each canister of the plurality of canisters further comprise at least a canister code to identify a particular canister, and wherein the canister code is based in part on dimensional attributes of a particular medication type, and wherein the first identifier is printed and affixed to at least one of the first package or the canister coded for at least the first medication.

14. A computer-implemented method for initiating and tracking dispensation and administration of medications to individual patients, the computer-implemented method comprising:

releasing, by a medication dispensing system, at least a first medication associated with a first dispensing request associated with at least a first electronic record, wherein at least one canister of the plurality of canisters is coded for at least the first medication;

generating, by the medication dispensing system, a first identifier for a first package, wherein the first identifier is specific to the first dispensing request and comprises information associated with at least the first electronic record;

packaging, by the medication dispensing system, at least the first medication for a first patient into the first package that includes the first identifier; and

dispensing, by the medication dispensing system, the first package comprising at least the first medication for the first patient;

updating, by the medication dispensing system, at least the first electronic record associated with the first patient to indicate that at least the first medication was packaged and dispensed in accordance with the first dispensing request, wherein updating at least the first electronic record comprises recording a time at least the first medication was dispensed, and recording information of a first individual that initiated the packaging and dispensing of at least the first medication; and

storing, by the medication dispensing system, the update of at least the first electronic record.

The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein packaging comprises printing the first identifier on the first package, and wherein the first identifier comprises at least one of a bar code, an optical code, a label, a printed element, an identifier, a badge, a magnetic element, and a readable image.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , further comprising:

receiving, by the medication dispensing system, information of the first identifier associated with the first package, wherein receiving information of the first identifier further includes receiving, from an input device of the first ADM, an input of the first identifier, wherein the input is at least one of a scan input or a manual input; and

wherein updating at least the first electronic record associated with the first patient further includes indicating that the packaged and dispensed first medication was administered to the first patient, wherein updating at least the first electronic record comprises recording a time at least the first medication was administered.

The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein the dispensation is dispensed at a first location and the administration is administered at a second location, and wherein and recording information of a second individual that initiated the administration of the packaged and dispensed first medication, wherein at least the first electronic record comprises the dispensation action of at least the first medication and an administration action of at least the first medication, wherein the administration action comprises an administration schedule for at least the first medication for the first patient.

18. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , further comprising:

receiving, by the medication dispensing system from an order management system (OMS), a dispensation action of at least the first medication, wherein the OMS is communicably coupled via a distributed network with the medication dispensing system, wherein the medication dispensing system is located at a first facility and the OMS is located at a second facility, and wherein the first facility is at least one of a healthcare facility, a home, a prison, or a retail facility.

19. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , further comprising:

receiving, by the medication dispensing system from a third individual, a dispensation action of at least the first medication.

20. One or more computer-readable storage media having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a processing circuit, cause the processing circuit to:

release at least a first medication associated with a first dispensing request associated with at least a first electronic record, wherein at least one canister of the plurality of canisters is coded for at least the first medication;

generate a first identifier for a first package, wherein the first identifier is specific to the first dispensing request and comprises information associated with at least the first electronic record;

package at least the first medication for a first patient into the first package that includes the first identifier; and

dispense the first package comprising at least the first medication for the first patient;

update at least the first electronic record associated with the first patient to indicate that at least the first medication was packaged and dispensed in accordance with the first dispensing request, wherein updating at least the first electronic record comprises recording a time at least the first medication was dispensed, and recording information of a first individual that initiated the packaging and dispensing of at least the first medication; and

store the update of at least the first electronic record.
