Abstract

A driveline for a military vehicle includes an engine, an energy storage system, an accessory drive coupled to the engine, a transmission configured to couple to at least one of a front axle or a rear axle of the military vehicle, a second motor coupled to the transmission and electrically coupled to the energy storage system, and a clutch positioned between the engine and the second motor. The accessory drive includes an air compressor and a first motor. The first motor is electrically coupled to the energy storage system. The clutch is spring-biased into engagement with the engine and pneumatically disengaged by an air supply selectively provided thereto based on operation of the air compressor. The driveline is operable in a plurality of modes including an engine-only mode and an electric-only mode.

Claims (60)

1. A driveline for a military vehicle, the driveline comprising:

an engine;

an energy storage system;

an accessory drive coupled to the engine, the accessory drive including:

an air compressor;

a first motor electrically coupled to the energy storage system;

a fan;

a hydraulic pump;

a sprag clutch including a first portion and a second portion, the first portion coupled to the hydraulic pump;

a first belt coupling the first portion of the sprag clutch to the air compressor, the first motor, and the fan; and

a second belt coupling the second portion of the sprag clutch to an output of the engine;

a transmission configured to couple to at least one of a front axle or a rear axle of the military vehicle;

a second motor coupled to the transmission and electrically coupled to the energy storage system; and

a clutch positioned between the engine and the second motor, wherein the clutch is spring-biased into engagement with the engine and pneumatically disengaged by an air supply selectively provided thereto based on operation of the air compressor;

wherein the driveline is operable in a plurality of modes including an engine mode and an electric mode;

wherein, in the engine mode, (i) the clutch does not receive the air supply such that the engine is coupled to the second motor and (ii) the engine drives (a) the accessory drive and (b) the transmission through the second motor and, thereby, the at least one of the front axle or the rear axle; and

wherein, in the electric mode, (i) the first motor receives power from the energy storage system to drive the air compressor to compress air to facilitate supplying the air supply to the clutch to disengage the clutch and decouple the engine from the second motor and (ii) the second motor receives the power from the energy storage system to drive the transmission and, thereby, the at least one of the front axle or the rear axle.

2. The driveline of claim 1 , further comprising an air tank, wherein the air tank is charged by the air compressor, and wherein the clutch receives the air supply from the air tank.

3. The driveline of claim 1 , wherein the clutch receives the air supply directly from the air compressor.

4. The driveline of claim 1 , wherein, in an event of damage to the first motor or the energy storage system during the electric-only mode, the air compressor cannot be driven by the first motor and, therefore, the air supply to the clutch stops such that the clutch auto-engages with the engine and the driveline remains operational.

5. The driveline of claim 4 , wherein the engine can be started by inertial forces of the military vehicle if the military vehicle is moving during the event of damage.

6. The driveline of claim 4 , wherein the engine can be back-started by the second motor if the event of damage is damage to the first motor and not to the energy storage system.

7. The driveline of claim 1 , wherein the engine can be started by inertial forces of the military vehicle if the military vehicle is moving when the driveline is switched from the electric mode to the engine mode.

8. The driveline of claim 1 , wherein the engine can be back-started by the second motor when a state of charge of the energy storage system falls below a threshold.

9. The driveline of claim 1 , wherein the first motor is configured to function as a generator to generate electricity as the accessory drive is driven by the engine during the engine mode.

10. The driveline of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of modes include a charge mode where both (i) the first motor is configured to function as a first generator to generate electricity as the accessory drive is driven by the engine and (ii) the second motor is configured to function as a second generator to generate electricity as the second motor is driven by the engine.

11. The driveline of claim 1 , wherein the clutch and the second motor are disposed within a common housing.

12. The driveline of claim 11 , wherein the clutch and the second motor are configured in a stacked arrangement, or wherein the clutch is integrated into the second motor.

13. A driveline of a military vehicle, the driveline comprising:

an engine;

an energy storage system;

an accessory drive coupled to the engine, the accessory drive including:

a plurality of accessories including an air compressor, a fan, and a hydraulic pump;

a first motor/generator electrically coupled to the energy storage system;

a sprag clutch including a first portion and a second portion, the first portion coupled to the hydraulic pump;

a first belt coupling the first portion of the sprag clutch to the air compressor, the first motor, and the fan; and

a second belt coupling the second portion of the sprag clutch to an output of the engine;

a transmission configured to couple to at least one of the front axle or the rear axle; and

a second motor/generator (i) positioned between the engine and the transmission and (ii) electrically coupled to the energy storage system;

wherein the driveline is operable in a charge mode where both (i) the first motor/generator is configured to generate electricity as the accessory drive is driven by the engine and (ii) the second motor/generator is configured to generate electricity as the second motor/generator is driven by the engine.

14. The driveline of claim 13 , further comprising a clutch positioned to selectively couple the engine to the second motor/generator, wherein the plurality of accessories of the accessory drive include an air compressor, and wherein the clutch is spring-biased into engagement with the engine and pneumatically disengaged by an air supply selectively provided thereto based on operation of the air compressor.

15. The driveline of claim 14 , wherein:

the driveline is operable in an engine mode and an electric mode;

in the engine mode, (i) the clutch does not receive the air supply such that the engine is coupled to the second motor/generator and (ii) the engine drives (a) the accessory drive and (b) the transmission through the second motor/generator and, thereby, the at least one of the front axle or the rear axle; and

in the electric mode, (i) the first motor/generator receives power from the energy storage system to drive the air compressor to compress air to facilitate supplying the air supply to the clutch to disengage the clutch and decouple the engine from the second motor/generator and (ii) the second motor/generator receives the power from the energy storage system to drive the transmission and, thereby, the at least one of the front axle or the rear axle.

16. The driveline of claim 14 , wherein the clutch and the second motor/generator are disposed within a common housing.

17. A driveline for a military vehicle, the driveline comprising:
