Abstract

A method includes receiving, by an RF receiving circuit of a passive wireless sensor of a wireless communication system, an RF signal. When a sensing element of the passive wireless sensor is exposed to an environmental condition, the method further includes affecting, by the sensing element, resonant frequency of the RF receiving circuit. The method further includes determining, by a processing module of the passive wireless sensor, a first value for an adjustable element for a known environmental condition, determining a second value for the adjustable element for an unknown environmental condition, determining a difference between the first and second values that correspond to a change, generating a coded value representative of the change, and transmitting the coded value. The method further includes receiving, by a second processing module of a sensor computing device of the wireless communication system, the coded value and determining a sensed environmental condition.

Claims (44)

1. A method comprises:

receiving, by a radio frequency (RF) receiving circuit of a passive wireless sensor of a plurality of passive wireless sensors of a wireless communication system, an RF signal having a carrier frequency of a plurality of carrier frequencies, wherein the RF receiving circuit includes a plurality of components, and wherein impedances of the plurality of components establish a resonant frequency of the RF receiving circuit;

when a sensing element of the passive wireless sensor is exposed to an environmental condition:

affecting, by the sensing element, the resonant frequency of the RF receiving circuit;

determining, by a processing module of the passive wireless sensor, a first value for an adjustable element of a plurality of elements for a known environmental condition based on the resonant frequency and the carrier frequency, wherein the plurality of elements includes the plurality of carrier frequencies and the impedances of the plurality of components and wherein other elements of the plurality of elements are fixed elements;

determining, by the processing module, a second value for the adjustable element for an unknown environmental condition based on the resonant frequency and the carrier frequency;

determining, by the processing module, a difference between the first and second values that corresponds to a change between the known environmental condition and the unknown environmental condition;

generating, by the processing module, a coded value representative of the change;

transmitting, by the RF receiving circuit, the coded value via a transmitter section of the RF receiving circuit;

receiving, by a second processing module of a sensor computing device of one or more sensor computing devices of the wireless communication system, the coded value from the passive wireless sensor, wherein the one or more sensor computing devices are coupled to the plurality of passive wireless sensors and one or more wireless networks; and

determining, by the second processing module, a sensed environmental condition based on the coded value.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of components comprises:

an antenna operable to receive the RF signal; and

a capacitor coupled to the antenna to form a tank circuit.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprises one of:

adjusting, by the processing module, characteristics of the antenna to affect the resonant frequency, wherein the antenna corresponds to the adjustable element; and

adjusting, by the processing module, capacitance of the capacitor to affect the resonant frequency, wherein the capacitor corresponds to the adjustable element, wherein the capacitor includes one or more of a varactor and a selectable capacitor bank.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of components comprises:

an antenna operable to receive the RF signal;

a capacitor; and

an inductor, wherein the capacitor and at least one of the antenna and the inductor are coupled to form a tank circuit.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprises:

adjusting, by the processing module, characteristics of the antenna to affect the resonant frequency, wherein the antenna corresponds to the adjustable element;

adjusting, by the processing module, capacitance of the capacitor to affect the resonant frequency, wherein the capacitor corresponds to the adjustable element, wherein the capacitor includes one or more of a varactor and a selectable capacitor bank; and

adjusting, by the processing module, inductance of the inductor to affect the resonant frequency, wherein the inductor corresponds to the adjustable element.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprises:

requesting, by the processing module, a change in the carrier frequency of the RF signal, wherein the carrier frequency corresponds to the adjustable element.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the environmental condition includes one of:

moisture;

temperature;

proximity to an object or a location; and

pressure.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the first value further comprises:

for a range of values for the adjustable element, determining, by the processing module, power levels for the received RF signal; and

identifying, by the processing module, a value of the range of values corresponding to a peak power level of the power levels as the first value.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the second value further comprises:

for a range of values for the adjustable element, determining, by the processing module, power levels for the received RF signal; and

identifying, by the processing module, a value of the range of values corresponding to a peak power level of the power levels as the first value.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprises:

transmitting, by the RF receiving circuit, power level data corresponding to the first and second values via the transmitter section of the RF receiving circuit;
