Abstract

An encapsulated flavorant or artificial sweetener for use with smokeless tobacco and related products. The encapsulated flavorant or artificial sweetener comprises a core encapsulated with a lipid-based coating that provides stability when in contact with tobacco, yet releases flavor over time when the product is used. The core comprises a carrier, such as silica, tobacco, beet fiber, citrus fiber, artificial sweetener, or the like, coated or loaded with a flavorant. Flavor loading may be in the range of approximately 10% to 60%, by weight. Flavorants include, but are not limited to, methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen), cinnamon (e.g., cinnamon oil), peppermint (e.g., peppermint oil), and spearmint (oil of spearmint).

Claims (25)

1. A time-released encapsulated flavor composite comprising:

a carrier in an amount ranging from 24 wt. % to 51 wt. % by weight of the flavor composite,

a flavorant in an amount ranging from 14 wt. % to 34 wt. % by weight of the flavor composite, the flavorant coating the carrier, and

a lipid layer in an amount ranging from 30 wt. % to 50 wt. % by weight of the flavor composite, the lipid layer coating the flavorant, the lipid layer including a monoglyceride, a triglyceride, or both a monoglyceride and a triglyceride.

2. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 1 , wherein the carrier and the flavorant define a solid core, the solid core being between 10 wt. % and 60 wt. % by weight of the flavor composite.

3. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 2 , wherein the lipid layer continuously surrounds the solid core.

4. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 1 , wherein the carrier and the flavorant define a solid core, the solid core being between 20 wt. % and 30 wt. % by weight of the flavor composite.

5. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 1 , wherein the carrier includes beet fiber, citrus fiber, coffee beans, silica, artificial sweetener, ground cinnamon, tobacco, or any combination thereof.

6. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 5 , wherein the carrier includes silica.

7. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 5 , wherein the artificial sweetener includes saccharin, aspartame, or both saccharin and aspartame.

8. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 5 , wherein the carrier includes the artificial sweetener.

9. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 1 , wherein the flavor composite has a particle size ranging from 1 millimeter to 3 millimeters.

10. The smokeless tobacco product of claim 9 , wherein the smokeless tobacco product has a salt concentration ranging from 1 wt. % to 10 wt. % by weight of the smokeless tobacco product.

11. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 1 , wherein the lipid coating further comprises:

a coloring agent.

12. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 1 , wherein the lipid coating includes 50 wt. % of the monoglyceride by weight of the lipid coating and 50 wt. % of the triglyceride by weight of the lipid coating.

13. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 1 , wherein the lipid coating includes a ratio of the monoglyceride to the triglyceride of 10:90.

14. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 1 , wherein the flavorant includes methyl salicylate, cinnamon, peppermint, spearmint, sweetener, or any combination thereof.

15. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 14 , wherein the sweetener is an artificial sweetener.

16. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 15 , wherein the artificial sweetener includes saccharin, aspartame, or a combination of saccharin and aspartame.

17. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 1 , wherein the flavorant is a non-liquid.

18. The time-release encapsulated flavor composite of claim 17 , further comprising:

a liquid flavor admixed with the carrier.

19. The time-released encapsulated flavor composite of claim 1 , wherein the carrier has a particle size ranging from 125 μm to 1000 μm.

20. A smokeless tobacco product including the encapsulated flavor composite of claim 1 , wherein the smokeless tobacco product has a moisture content greater than 30%.
