Abstract

Devices, systems, and methods are provided herein for delivering medication (e.g., insulin) via a wearable pump having a patch-style form factor for adhesion to a user's body. The reusable pump may be coupled to a disposable cap housing a microdosing system for delivering precise, repeatable doses of medication to a cannula configured to deliver medication to a target infusion area beneath the user's outer skin layer. The system further may include an applicator for inserting the cannula into the user's skin and/or applying an adhesive pad to the skin.

Claims (50)

1. An applicator for use with a medication infusion device configured to be removably adhered to skin of a wearer for delivering doses of medication through a transcutaneous portion, the applicator comprising:

an applicator needle configured to be positioned within a lumen of a cannula in a pre-deployment state;

a first link configured to rotate about an axis at a first end of the first link;

a second link coupled to the first link at a joint at a second end of the first link, the second link coupled to the applicator needle; and

an actuator configured to, upon actuation, cause the first link to rotate about the axis and the second link to rotate about the joint relative to the first link to advance the applicator needle and the cannula into the skin of the wearer and to fully withdraw the applicator needle from the cannula in a deployment state such that at least a portion of the cannula remains in the skin of the wearer.

2. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the first link rotates in a single direction to advance the applicator needle and the cannula into the skin of the wearer and to fully withdraw the applicator needle from the cannula.

3. The applicator of claim 1 , further comprising a stopping zone configured to clamp the second link and the applicator needle to reduce noise of the second link and the applicator needle.

4. The applicator of claim 1 , further comprising a biasing member configured to bias the first link to cause the first link to rotate about the axis upon actuation.

5. The applicator of claim 4 , wherein the first link and the applicator needle stop rotation when the biasing member is fully unloaded.

6. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the first link and the applicator needle stop rotation without contacting a hard stopping surface.

7. The applicator of claim 1 , further comprising a channel comprising at least one ledge,

wherein the cannula comprises at least one clip disposed at a proximal end, and

wherein, upon actuation, the at least one clip of the cannula is configured to slide along the at least one ledge of the channel such that the cannula moves along a substantially straight path.

8. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is configured to, upon actuation, cause the cannula to be inserted below a derma layer of the skin of the wearer.

9. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the transcutaneous portion comprises a needle configured to be fluidically coupled to the cannula.

10. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the second link comprises a first interface at an opposing end to the joint and the cannula comprises a second interface configured to contact the first interface and to permit rotational movement during insertion of the cannula into the skin of the wearer.

11. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the applicator is configured to be removed from the skin of the wearer after application and prior to delivery of the doses of medication, and

wherein the applicator is configured to be disposed of after removal from the skin of the wearer.

12. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is configured to, upon actuation, cause the first link to rotate about the axis to advance the applicator needle and the cannula into the skin of the wearer at an angle of 40-50 degrees from a surface of the skin of the wearer.

13. An applicator for inserting a cannula into skin of a wearer, the applicator comprising:

an applicator needle configured to be positioned within a lumen of a cannula in a pre-deployment state;

a first link configured to rotate about an axis at a first end of the first link;

a second link coupled to the first link at a joint at a second end of the first link, the second link coupled to the applicator needle;

a biasing member coupled to the first link; and

an actuator configured to, upon actuation, cause the first link to rotate about the axis and the second link to rotate about the joint relative to the first link to advance the applicator needle and the cannula into the skin of the wearer and to fully withdraw the applicator needle from the cannula in a deployment state such that at least a portion of the cannula remains in the skin of the wearer.

14. The applicator of claim 13 , wherein the biasing member is configured to bias the first link to cause the first link to rotate about the axis upon actuation.

15. The applicator of claim 13 , wherein the biasing member is configured to transition from a biased state to an unbiased state upon actuation.

16. The applicator of claim 15 , wherein, in the pre-deployment state, the biasing member is configured to interact with a blocking mechanism such that the biasing member is fixed in the biased state.

17. The applicator of claim 16 , wherein, upon actuation, the blocking mechanism is configured to transition to release the biasing member such that the biasing member transitions from the biased state to the unbiased state.

18. The applicator of claim 13 , wherein the first link is configured to rotate in a single direction to advance the applicator needle and the cannula into the skin of the wearer and to fully withdraw the applicator needle from the cannula.

19. The applicator of claim 13 , further comprising a channel comprising at least one ledge,

wherein the cannula comprises at least one clip disposed at a proximal end, and

wherein, upon actuation, the at least one clip of the cannula is configured to slide along the at least one ledge of the channel such that the cannula moves along a substantially straight path.

20. The applicator of claim 19 , further comprising at least one guiding arm,

wherein the cannula further comprises at least one wing disposed at the proximal end, and

wherein, upon actuation, the at least one wing of the cannula is configured to slide along the at least one guiding arm in order to minimize rotation of the cannula around a longitudinal axis of the cannula.

21. A method for inserting a cannula for delivering doses of medication to skin of a wearer, the method comprising:

selecting an applicator comprising an applicator needle configured to be positioned within a lumen of the cannula in a pre-deployment state, a first link configured to rotate about an axis at a first end of the first link, a second link coupled to the first link at a joint at a second end of the first link, the second link coupled to the applicator needle, and an actuator;

actuating the actuator to cause the first link to rotate about the axis and the second link to rotate about the joint relative to the first link to advance the applicator needle and the cannula into the skin of the wearer, and fully withdraw the applicator needle from the cannula in a deployment state such that at least a portion of the cannula remains in the skin of the wearer; and

removing the applicator from the skin of the wearer after application and prior to delivery of the doses of medication.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein actuating the actuator further causes the applicator to transition a biasing member from a biased state to an unbiased state, the biasing member coupled to the first link.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein transitioning the biasing member to the unbiased state causes rotation of the first link and further transitioning the biasing member to the unbiased state causes withdrawal of the applicator needle from the cannula.

24. The method of claim 22 , wherein, in the pre-deployment state, the biasing member is configured to interact with a blocking mechanism such that the biasing member is fixed in the biased state.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein actuating the actuator further causes the applicator to transition the blocking mechanism to a position wherein the biasing member does not interact with the blocking mechanism such that the biasing member transitions from the biased state to the unbiased state.

26. The method of claim 21 , further comprising disposing of the applicator after removing from the skin of the wearer.

27. The method of claim 21 , wherein advancing the applicator needle and the cannula into the skin of the wearer comprises advancing the applicator needle and the cannula along a channel comprising at least one ledge.

28. The method of claim 27 , wherein the cannula comprises at least one clip disposed at a proximal end and configured to slide along the at least one ledge of the channel such that the cannula moves along a substantially straight path.

29. The method of claim 28 , wherein the channel further comprises at least one guiding arm and the cannula further comprises at least one wing disposed at the proximal end, and

wherein advancing the applicator needle and the cannula into the skin of the wearer comprises sliding the at least one wing along the at least one guiding arm in order to minimize rotation of the cannula around a longitudinal axis of the cannula.

30. The method of claim 21 , wherein the applicator comprises at least one stopping zone configured to slow the rotation of the first link about the axis.
