Abstract

A bushing includes a cylindrical body and a flange extending from the cylindrical body. The cylindrical body has an inner face defining a bore. The flange includes an outer rim and a face extending radially between the bore and the outer rim. At least one groove is formed in the face. The at least one groove extends from a first end intersecting the bore to a second end adjacent the outer rim such that grease supplied to the bore of the bushing is able to flow through the at least one groove.

Claims (48)

1. A bushing, comprising:

a cylindrical body defining a bore; and

a flange extending from the cylindrical body, wherein

at least one groove is formed in an outer surface of the flange and extends from a first end at the bore to a second end adjacent to an end of the outer surface of the flange, and

the second end is spaced apart from the end of the outer surface of the flange.

2. The bushing of claim 1 , wherein the at least one groove is formed in the outer surface of the flange such that grease is able to flow from the bore through the at least one groove.

3. The bushing of claim 1 , wherein the at least one groove follows an arcuate path from the first end to the second end.

4. The bushing of claim 1 , wherein:

the at least one groove comprises a first groove and a second groove,

the first groove extends from the first end the second end, and

the second groove extends from an end of the bore to an area adjacent the end of the outer surface of the flange.

5. The bushing of claim 4 , wherein the first and the second grooves diverge as the first and the second grooves extend from the end of the bore to the first end and the second area, respectively.

6. The bushing of claim 1 , wherein:

the cylindrical body further comprises an inner face defining the bore,

at least one channel is defined in the inner face of the cylindrical body and extends a length of the bushing, and

the at least one channel intersects the at least one groove on the outer surface of the flange.

7. The bushing of claim 1 , wherein

the at least one groove includes a first groove and a second groove, and

the first and the second grooves diverge as the first and the second grooves extend from an end of the bore to the first end and an area adjacent to the end of the outer surface of the flange, respectively.

8. An apparatus comprising:

a control arm having a coupling portion configured to couple to a chassis; and

a bushing in the coupling portion, the bushing comprising:

a cylindrical body defining a bore; and

a flange extending from the cylindrical body, wherein

at least one groove is formed in an outer surface of the flange and extends from a first end at the bore to second end adjacent to an end of the outer surface of the flange, and

the second end is spaced apart from the end of the outer surface of the flange.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the at least one groove is formed in the outer surface of the flange such that grease is able to flow from the bore through the at least one groove.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the at least one groove follows an arcuate path from the first end to the second end.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein:

the at least one groove comprises a first groove and a second groove,

the first groove extends from the first end to the second end, and

the second groove extends from an end of the bore to an area adjacent the end of the outer surface of the flange.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the first and the second grooves diverge as the first and the second grooves extend from the end of the bore to the second end and the second area, respectively.

13. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein:

the cylindrical body further comprises an inner face defining the bore,

at least one channel is defined in the inner face of the cylindrical body and extends a length of the bushing, and

the at least one channel intersects the at least one groove on the outer surface of the flange.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the first and the second grooves diverge as the first and the second grooves extend from the end of the bore to the second end and the second area, respectively.

15. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the coupling portion of the control arm includes a grease fitting configured to couple to a grease gun to supply grease to the bore of the bushing.

16. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the outer surface of the flange is configured to contact a surface of the chassis or a surface of a washer, and wherein the at least one groove is formed in the outer surface of the flange such that grease is able to flow from the bore and in between the at least one groove and the surface of the chassis or the surface of the washer.

17. The apparatus of claim 8 , further comprising a second bushing disposed in the coupling portion of the control arm.

18. A method, comprising:

coupling a grease gun to a grease fitting on a coupling portion of a control arm; and

injecting grease into the coupling portion such that the grease flows out of a bore of a bushing disposed in the coupling portion and through at least one groove extending from a first end at the bore to a second end adjacent an end of an outer surface of a flange of the bushing.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein injecting the grease causes the grease to flow through at least one channel formed in an inner face defining the bore of the bushing.

20. The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

coupling the coupling portion of the control arm to a chassis such that the outer surface of the flange contacts a surface of the chassis, and

wherein injecting the grease into the coupling portion further comprises injecting the grease such that excess grease flows through the at least one groove and exits an area defined by the outer surface of the flange and the surface of the chassis.
