Abstract

The present invention provides compact spiral-wound filter elements having cassette-like performance. The invention further provides filtration systems (e.g., TFF systems) and processes (e.g., SPTFF processes) employing compact spiral-wound filter elements having cassette-like performance.

Claims (11)

1. A spiral-wound filter element comprising: a filtration membrane and a feed screen, wherein said feed screen provides at least 70% of the mass-transfer-limited permeate flux as a reference cassette filter having the same filtration membrane and feed spacer as the spiral-wound filter element, both run at the same cross flow flux and, wherein the outermost feed channel of the spiral-wound filter element is blocked.

2. The spiral-wound filter element of claim 1 , further comprising a permeate screen.

3. The spiral-wound filter element of claim 1 , wherein the filtration membrane is a microfiltration membrane or an ultrafiltration membrane.

4. The spiral-wound filter element of claim 1 , wherein the filter membrane is in planar contact with the outer surfaces of the feed screen.

5. The spiral-wound filter element of claim 2 , wherein said permeate screen has a height of 300 μm or less.

6. The spiral-wound filter element of claim 2 , wherein said permeate screen compresses less than 130 μm in height under compression of about 50 pounds per square inch (psi).

7. A tangential flow filtration (TFF) system comprising at least one filter element of claim 1 .

8. The TFF system of claim 7 , wherein the TFF is a single-pass tangential flow filtration (SPTFF) system.

9. The spiral-wound filter element of claim 1 , wherein said feed screen is subject to flattening or removing of tangent points on an outer surface of the feed screen and, wherein said feed screen increases cross flow velocity when used in a feed channel and thereby promotes a high turbulence near the membrane surface as compared to a feed screen without flattening and removal of tangent points.

10. The spiral-wound filter element of claim 1 , wherein said feed screen is reversibly expandable and compressible.

11. The spiral-wound filter element of claim 1 , having a feed channel pressure drop of no more than 1.2 times the feed channel pressure drop of the cassette filter at the same cross flow flux.
