Building panels having simulated wood grain and methods of making the same
Building panels and methods of making the same are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a method of injection molding a building panel includes co-mingling a first material and a second material in a molten material, where the second material includes a color that contrasts with the first material. The method also includes injecting the molten material into a cavity of an injection mold, modifying a flow front of the molten material as the molten material flows in the cavity, and cooling the molten material to form a solidified building panel.
1 . A building panel, comprising:
an exposed exterior facing portion comprising:
a simulated wood grain comprising a plurality of peaks and valleys that are proximate to one another;
a top lock extending outwardly from a top portion of the exposed exterior facing portion, wherein the top portion circumscribes the top lock; and
a plurality of color variation comprising streaks of lighter color portion and darker color portion, wherein each of the color variations are transverse to a set of adjacent peaks and valleys;
wherein a first streak of the lighter color portion is aligned within a band extending along the exterior facing portion and having a thickness not more than five times a thickness of the light color portion or the darker color portion, whichever is less.
2 . The building panel of claim 1 , wherein at least one set of adjacent peaks and valleys has a same number of peaks and valleys as another one of the sets of peaks and valleys.
3 . The building panel of claim 1 , wherein at least one set of adjacent peaks and valleys of the plurality of peaks and valleys has a different number of peaks and valleys as another set of peaks and valleys of the plurality of peaks and valleys.
4 . The building panel of claim 1 , wherein the building panel is manufactured according to a method comprising:
co-mingling a first material and a second material in a molten material, the second material comprising a color that contrasts with the first material;
injecting the molten material into a cavity of an injection mold;
modifying a flow of the molten material from within the injection mold while the molten material flows in the injection mold; and
cooling the molten material to form a solidified building panel.
5 . A building panel, comprising:
an exposed exterior facing portion comprising a plurality of color variations comprising streaks of lighter color portion and darker color portion,
wherein each of the color variations are oriented such that at least some of the streaks of lighter color portion and the darker color portion extend along the exposed exterior facing portion between a top portion and a bottom portion of the building panel to visually simulate natural wood, and
a top lock extending outwardly from the top portion, wherein the top portion circumscribes the top lock,
wherein a first streak of the lighter color portion is aligned within a band extending along the exterior facing portion and having a thickness not more than five times a thickness of the light color portion or the darker color portion, whichever is less.
6 . The building panel of claim 5 , wherein each of the color variations are transverse to the exposed exterior facing portion of the building panel.
7 . The building panel of claim 5 , wherein the exposed exterior facing portion further comprises a simulated wood grain comprising a plurality of peaks and valleys that are proximate to one another.
8 . The building panel of claim 7 , wherein each of the color variations are transverse to a set of adjacent peaks and valleys.
9 . The building panel of claim 7 , wherein at least one set of adjacent peaks and valleys has a same number of peaks and valleys as another one of the sets of peaks and valleys.
10 . The building panel of claim 7 , wherein at least one set of adjacent peaks and valleys each has a different number of peaks and valleys as another one of the sets of peaks and valleys.
11 . The building panel of claim 5 , wherein the building panel is manufactured according to a method comprising:
co-mingling a first material and a second material in a molten material, the second material comprising a color that contrasts with the first material;
injecting the molten material into a cavity of an injection mold;
modifying a flow of the molten material from within the injection mold while the molten material flows in the injection mold; and
cooling the molten material to form a solidified building panel.
12 . A building panel, comprising:
a front, a back, a top and a bottom, and two opposing sides; and
an exterior facing portion positioned along the front, the exterior facing portion including a textured surface simulating wood grain of a co-mingled first material and a second material, the second material comprising a color that contrasts with the first material, wherein the simulated wood grain includes a plurality of color variations comprising streaks of lighter color portion corresponding to the first material and darker color portion corresponding to the second material,
wherein a first streak of the lighter color portion is aligned within a band extending along the exterior facing portion and having a thickness not more than five times a thickness of the light color portion or the darker color portion, whichever is less.
13 . The building panel of claim 12 , further comprising co-mingled third material, wherein the third material is characterized as having a streaker colorant.
14 . The building panel of claim 12 , wherein the first material comprises about 85 wt. % to about 97 wt. % of a base resin.
15 . The building panel of claim 12 , further comprising a top lock positioned proximate to the top and extending outwardly from a top portion of the exterior facing portion.
16 . The building panel of claim 15 , further comprising a bottom lock that extends rearward from the exterior facing portion and configured to engage the top lock.
17 . The building panel of claim 16 , wherein the top lock comprises a female receptacle and the bottom lock comprises a male extension.
18 . The building panel of claim 12 further comprising a plurality of gate tabs that extend from the exterior facing portion configured to receive a fastener for securing the building panel to a structure.
19 . The building panel of claim 12 , wherein the exterior facing portion includes a plurality of single portions, the plurality of shingle portions sized to reflect conventional sized natural wood building materials.
