Abstract

A system is disclosed for use in additively manufacturing an object. The system may have a support and a first module operatively mounted to an end of the support and configured to discharge a material during motion of the support to form an object. The system may also have a second module configured to sever the material, at least a third module configured to at least one of compact or cure the material, and an actuator configured to cause movement of the second and the at least a third modules relative to the first module.

Claims (54)

1. An additive manufacturing system, comprising:

a support;

a first module operatively mounted to an end of the support and configured to discharge a material during motion of the support to form an object;

a second module operatively connected to the support and configured to:

sever the material; and

move relative to the support and first module;

at least a third module operatively connected to the support and configured to:

at least one of compact or cure the material; and

move relative to the support and first module; and

an actuator configured to simultaneously move both the second and the at least a third modules relative to the first module in a variable direction linearly away from the first module.

2. The additive manufacturing system of claim 1 , wherein the second module is configured to move together with the at least a third module whenever the at least a third module is moved relative to the support and the first module.

3. The additive manufacturing system of claim 1 , wherein:

the direction away is a first direction away;

the actuator is configured to exert a force in the first direction away to cause the simultaneous movement of the second and the at least a third modules relative to the first module; and

the additive manufacturing system further includes a second actuator configured to exert a force in a second direction opposite to the first direction away during the simultaneous movement of the second and the at least a third modules relative to the first module.

4. The additive manufacturing system of claim 3 , further including

a carriage slidable relative to the support,

wherein the actuator and the second actuator are located at opposing lateral sides of the carriage.

5. The additive manufacturing system of claim 2 , further including a second actuator configured to move the second module relative to the at least a third module.

6. The additive manufacturing system of claim 5 , wherein movement caused by the second actuator is in a direction substantially aligned with the simultaneous movement caused by the actuator.

7. The additive manufacturing system of claim 5 , wherein the second actuator is configured to move the second module towards and away from the material, the first module, and the at least a third module.

8. The additive manufacturing system of claim 7 , further including a third actuator configured to power a cutting mechanism of the second module during the movement towards the material.

9. The additive manufacturing system of claim 8 , wherein the third actuator is configured to rotate the cutting mechanism relative to the at least a third module.

10. The additive manufacturing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least a third module includes:

a first subassembly configured to press against the material; and

a second subassembly arranged in series with the first subassembly and configured to press against the material.

11. The additive manufacturing system of claim 10 , wherein the at least a third module further includes a third subassembly configured to direct cure energy towards the material.

12. An additive manufacturing system, comprising:

a support;

a discharge module operatively mounted to an end of the support and having an outlet configured to discharge a material during motion of the support to form an object;

a cutting module operatively connected to the support and configured to sever the material;

a compaction module operatively connected to the support and configured to both compact and cure the material; and

an actuator configured to simultaneously move both the cutting and compaction modules a variable distance away from both the discharge module and the support.

13. The additive manufacturing system of claim 12 , further including:

a rail connected to the support; and

a carriage slidable along the rail, wherein:

the cutting and compaction modules are mounted to the carriage; and

the actuator is connected between the support and the carriage.

14. The additive manufacturing system of claim 13 ,

wherein the actuator is a first actuator;

the system further comprises a second actuator directly connected to the carriage; and

the second actuator is configured to move the cutting module relative to both the compaction module and the first actuator.

15. The additive manufacturing system of claim 14 , wherein the second actuator is configured to be moved by the first actuator.

16. The additive manufacturing system of claim 14 , further including a third actuator configured to rotate a cutting mechanism of the cutting module, wherein movement caused by the second actuator results in the rotating cutting mechanism passing between the outlet of the discharge module and the compaction module.

17. An additive manufacturing system, comprising:

a support capable of moving in multiple directions; and

a head operatively mounted to an end of the support and configured to be moved in the multiple directions by the support; wherein the head comprises:

a discharge module having an outlet configured to discharge a material during motion of the support to form an object;

a cutting module configured to sever the material; and

a compaction module configured to both compact and cure the material, wherein:

the compaction module is configured to move a first distance away from the support and the discharge module,

the cutting module is configured to move a second distance away from the support, the discharge module, and the compaction module, and

the cutting module is further configured to move together with the compaction module when the compaction module is moved the first distance away from the support and the discharge module; and

a first actuator configured to exert a force in a first direction and simultaneously move both the cutting and compaction modules relative to the discharge module and the support; and a second actuator configured to exert a force in a second direction opposite to the first direction.
