Abstract

Systems and methods relating to communication over relatively low power protocols by adding reliability functionality are presented. Sent messages having reliability functionality include an acknowledgment request flag that indicates that the message includes a request to acknowledge the request once received and an application payload that includes data for the message. The acknowledgment request flag causes responding devices to send an acknowledgment message to the sending device indicating that the sent message has been received.

Claims (78)

1. An electronic device comprising:

a processor;

memory storing instructions, which when executed, are configured to cause the processor to:

generate a message for transmission to a destination device;

set an acknowledgement request flag in the message that is effective to cause the destination device to acknowledge receipt of the message;

insert an entry in a retransmission table for the message;

arm a retransmission timer usable to determine to retransmit the message;

send the message to the destination device;

determine whether the retransmission timer has surpassed a predetermined threshold;

determine if a retransmission limit has been reached;

if the retransmission limit has been reached, block retransmission of the message and notify an application layer of a failure to transmit the message; and

if the retransmission limit has not been reached and the retransmission timer has surpassed the predetermined threshold, retransmit the message.

2. The electronic device of claim 1 , the instructions further executable to cause the processor to:

based the retransmission of the message, update the entry for the message in the retransmission table.

3. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein a value for the retransmission timer is determined based on an estimation of a roundtrip time between the electronic device and the destination device.

4. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the instructions to generate the message for transmission to the destination device are further executable to cause the processor to:

insert data into an application payload field of the message.

5. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the instructions to send the message to the destination device are further executable to cause the processor to:

send the message to the destination device using User Datagram Protocol (UDP).

6. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device is one or more of:

a border router;

a thermostat;

hazard detector; or

entryway interface device.

7. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the destination device is one or more of:

a thermostat;

hazard detector; or

entryway interface device.

8. A method for reliable message exchange between a source device and a destination device, the method comprising the source device:

generating a message for transmission to the destination device;

setting an acknowledgement request flag in the message that is effective to cause the destination device to acknowledge receipt of the message;

inserting an entry in a retransmission table for the message;

arming a retransmission timer usable to determine to retransmit the message;

sending the message to the destination device;

determining whether the retransmission timer has surpassed a predetermined threshold;

determining if a retransmission limit has been reached;

if the retransmission limit has been reached, blocking retransmission of the message and notifying an application layer of a failure to transmit the message; and

if the retransmission limit has not been reached and the retransmission timer has surpassed the predetermined threshold, retransmitting the message.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising the source device:

based the retransmitting the message, updating the entry for the message in the retransmission table.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein a value for the retransmission timer is determined based on an estimation of a roundtrip time between the source device and the destination device.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the generating the message for transmission to the destination device includes:

inserting data into an application payload field of the message.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the sending the message to the destination device comprises:

sending the message to the destination device using User Datagram Protocol (UDP).

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the source device is one or more of:

a border router;

a thermostat;

hazard detector; or

entryway interface device.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the destination device is one or more of:

a thermostat;

hazard detector; or

entryway interface device.

15. A non-transitory, computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon, which when executed, are configured to cause a processor to:

generate a message for transmission to a destination device;

set an acknowledgement request flag in the message that is effective to cause the destination device to acknowledge receipt of the message;

insert an entry in a retransmission table for the message;

arm a retransmission timer usable to determine to retransmit the message;

send the message to the destination device;

determine whether the retransmission timer has surpassed a predetermined threshold;

determine if a retransmission limit has been reached;

if the retransmission limit has been reached, block retransmission of the message and notify an application layer of a failure to transmit the message; and

if the retransmission limit has not been reached and the retransmission timer has surpassed the predetermined threshold, retransmit the message.

16. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein a value for the retransmission timer is determined based on an estimation of a roundtrip time between a source device and the destination device.

17. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the source device is one or more of:

a border router;

a thermostat;

hazard detector; or

entryway interface device.

18. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions that generate the message for transmission to the destination device are configured to cause the processor to:

insert data into an application payload field of the message.

19. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions that send the message to the destination device are configured to cause the processor to:

send the message to the destination device using User Datagram Protocol (UDP).

20. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the destination device is one or more of:

a thermostat;

hazard detector; or

entryway interface device.
