Abstract

A method for managing communications within a network comprising utility meters, each associated and connected to at least one utility management center through at least one intermediate data concentrator. A message is sent by a utility meter to the destination data concentrator. This message includes metering data measurement reported by said utility meter, its utility meter identifier, the destination data concentrator identifier and the management center identifier. Then, on the basis of several metering data measurements, a metering counter differential consumption value is calculated by difference of two metering counter consumption indexes measured by the utility meter within a time period interval. Then, a report containing at least the metering counter differential consumption value is sent from the destination data concentrator towards the utility management center to which said utility meter is associated.

Claims (27)

1. A method for managing utility meter communications by a data concentrator, comprising:

receiving, by the data concentrator, a plurality of utility meter messages from a plurality of utility meters via a network, each of the plurality of utility meter messages including a metering data measurement, a utility meter identifier, an identifier of the data concentrator, and a management center identifier;

determining, at the data concentrator, one or more consumption values based on the metering data measurements in the plurality of utility meter messages; and

sending, by the data concentrator via the network, a report including the one or more consumption values to a management center, among a plurality of management centers, corresponding to the management center identifier.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining further comprises determining the one or more consumption values based on a difference of two metering counter indexes measured by said plurality of utility meters.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sending comprises sending the report, which includes detailed tariff computations based on a tariff table and the determined one or more consumption values.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising securing the report sent by the data concentrator over the network.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein said securing includes signing the report with a digital signature.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein said securing includes encrypting the report with an encryption key.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending acknowledgements to the plurality of utility meters in response to receipt of the plurality of utility meter messages.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving comprises receiving the plurality of utility meter messages in response to a request from the destination data concentrator.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending a configuration message to the plurality of utility meters to set a reporting rate of utility meter messages for each of the plurality of utility meters.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving comprises receiving the plurality of utility meter messages from the plurality of utility meters by the destination data concentrator via synchronous communication.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving comprises receiving the plurality of utility meter messages by the destination data concentrator at periodic intervals.

12. A destination data concentrator apparatus that manages utility meter communications, the apparatus comprising:

a processor configured to

receive a plurality of utility meter messages from a plurality of utility meters via a network, each of the plurality of utility meter messages including a metering data measurement, a utility meter identifier, an identifier of the data concentrator, and a management center identifier;

determine one or more consumption values based on the metering data measurements in the plurality of utility meter messages; and

send, via the network, a report including the one or more consumption values to a management center, among a plurality of management centers, corresponding to the management center identifier.

13. The destination data concentrator apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine the one or more consumption values based on a difference of two metering counter indexes measured by said plurality of utility meters.

14. The destination data concentrator apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further configured to send the report, which includes detailed tariff computations based on a tariff table and the one or more consumption values.

15. The destination data concentrator apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further configured to secure the report sent by the data concentrator over the network.

16. The destination data concentrator apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further configured to sign the report with a digital signature.

17. The destination data concentrator apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further configured to encrypt the report with an encryption key.

18. The destination data concentrator apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to send acknowledgements to the plurality of utility meters in response to receipt of the plurality of utility meter messages.

19. The destination data concentrator apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive the plurality of utility meter messages in response to a request from the destination data concentrator.

20. The destination data concentrator apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further configured to send a configuration message to the plurality of utility meters to set a reporting rate of utility meter messages for each of the plurality of utility meters.
