Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed herein for modifying suggestion metadata in an electronic document. A copy request is received to copy a portion of the electronic document. The portion of the electronic document includes a suggestion having metadata that indicates the suggestion was made by a first user. The copy request is received from a second user. A paste request to paste the copied portion is received from the second user. Responsive to determining to modify the metadata of the suggestion, the indication that the first suggestion was made by the first user is replaced with an indication that the first suggestion was made by the second user.

Claims (56)

1. A method to modify suggestion metadata in an electronic document, the method comprising:

receiving, by at least one computer processor, a copy request to copy a portion of a first electronic document, wherein the portion of the first electronic document includes a first suggestion having metadata that indicates the first suggestion was made by a first user, and wherein the copy request is initiated by a second user;

receiving, from a user device of the second user, a paste request to paste the portion including the first suggestion made by the first user;

determining, by the at least one computer processor, whether a destination for the paste request is a second electronic document;

in response to determining that the destination for the paste request is the second electronic document, determining, by the at least one computer processor, whether to modify the metadata of the first suggestion for the second electronic document; and

responsive to determining to modify the metadata of the first suggestion for the second electronic document:

replacing, in the metadata of the first suggestion for the second electronic document, an indication that the first suggestion was made by the first user, who added the first suggestion to the first electronic document, with an indication that the first suggestion was made by the second user, who requested that the portion including the first suggestion added by the first user to the first electronic document be pasted to the second electronic document, wherein the replacing causes the portion pasted into the second electronic document to have the metadata with the indication that the first suggestion was made by the second user.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining whether to modify the metadata of the first suggestion comprises:

determining whether the second electronic document is of a same type as the first electronic document.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

responsive to determining that the second electronic document is of the same type as the first electronic document, pasting the portion of the first electronic document to the second electronic document with the modified metadata.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

responsive to determining that the second electronic document that is of a different type than the first electronic document, determining whether the paste request is initiated within a different application that an application associated with the first electronic document.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

responsive to determining that the paste request is initiated within the different application, removing the metadata of the first suggestion, and pasting the portion of the first electronic document to the second electronic document without the metadata.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first suggestion comprises a change to the portion of the first electronic document, and wherein the first suggestion is to be (i) accepted responsive to the first suggestion comprising the change that is an addition, or (ii) rejected responsive to the first suggestion comprising the change that is a deletion.

7. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

creating a second suggestion having second metadata, the second suggestion corresponding to the first suggestion included in the pasted portion; and

pasting the second suggestion to the destination indicated in the paste request.

8. A system to modify suggestion metadata in an electronic document, the system comprising:

a memory storing instructions; and

at least one computer processor to execute the instructions to perform operations comprising:

receiving a copy request to copy a portion of a first electronic document, wherein the portion of the first electronic document includes a first suggestion having metadata that indicates the first suggestion was made by a first user, and wherein the copy request is initiated by a second user;

receiving, from a user device of the second user, a paste request to paste the portion including the first suggestion made by the first user;

determining whether a destination for the paste request is a second electronic document;

in response to determining that the destination for the paste request is the second electronic document, determining whether to modify the metadata of the first suggestion for the second electronic document; and

responsive to determining to modify the metadata of the first suggestion for the second electronic document:

replacing, in the metadata of the first suggestion for the second electronic document, an indication that the first suggestion was made by the first user, who added the first suggestion to the first electronic document, with an indication that the first suggestion was made by the second user, who requested that the portion including the first suggestion added by the first user to the first electronic document be pasted to the second electronic document, wherein the replacing causes the portion pasted into the second electronic document to have the metadata with the indication that the first suggestion was made by the second user.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein determining whether to modify the metadata of the first suggestion comprises:

determining whether the second electronic document is of a same type as the first electronic document.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the operations further comprise:

responsive to determining that the second electronic document is of the same type as the first electronic document, pasting the portion of the first electronic document to the second electronic document with the modified metadata.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the operations further comprise:

responsive to determining that the second electronic document that is of a different type than the first electronic document, determining whether the paste request is initiated within a different application that an application associated with the first electronic document.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise:

responsive to determining that the paste request is initiated within the different application, removing the metadata of the first suggestion, and pasting the portion of the first electronic document to the second electronic document without the metadata.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first suggestion comprises a change to the portion of the first electronic document, and wherein the first suggestion is to be (i) accepted responsive to the first suggestion comprising the change that is an addition, or (ii) rejected responsive to the first suggestion comprising the change that is a deletion.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the operations further comprise:

creating a second suggestion having second metadata, the second suggestion corresponding to the first suggestion included in the pasted portion; and

pasting the second suggestion to the destination indicated in the paste request.

15. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions, which when executed by a processor cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving a copy request to copy a portion of a first electronic document, wherein the portion of the first electronic document includes a first suggestion having metadata that indicates the first suggestion was made by a first user, and wherein the copy request is initiated by a second user;

receiving, from a user device of the second user, a paste request to paste the portion including the first suggestion made by the first user;

determining whether a destination for the paste request is a second electronic document;

in response to determining that the destination for the paste request is the second electronic document, determining whether to modify the metadata of the first suggestion for the second electronic document; and

responsive to determining to modify the metadata of the first suggestion for the second electronic document:

replacing, in the metadata of the first suggestion for the second electronic document, an indication that the first suggestion was made by the first user, who added the first suggestion to the first electronic document, with an indication that the first suggestion was made by the second user, who requested that the portion including the first suggestion added by the first user to the first electronic document be pasted to the second electronic document, wherein the replacing causes the portion pasted into the second document to have the metadata with the indication that the first suggestion was made by the second user.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein determining whether to modify the metadata of the first suggestion comprises:

determining whether the second electronic document is of a same type as the first electronic document.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the operations further comprise:

responsive to determining that the second electronic document is of the same type as the first electronic document, pasting the portion of the first electronic document to the second electronic document with the modified metadata.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the operations further comprise:

responsive to determining that the second electronic document that is of a different type than the first electronic document, determining whether the paste request is initiated within a different application that an application associated with the first electronic document.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 18 , wherein the operations further comprise:

responsive to determining that the paste request is initiated within the different application, removing the metadata of the first suggestion, and pasting the portion of the first electronic document to the second electronic document without the metadata.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the first suggestion comprises a change to the portion of the first electronic document, and wherein the first suggestion is to be (i) accepted responsive to the first suggestion comprising the change that is an addition, or (ii) rejected responsive to the first suggestion comprising the change that is a deletion.
