Abstract

A fluid routing plug for use with a fluid end section. The fluid end section being one of a plurality of fluid end sections making up a fluid end side of a high pressure pump. The fluid routing plug is installed within a horizontal bore formed in a fluid end section and is configured to route fluid between an intake and discharge bore. The fluid routing plug comprises a plurality of first and second fluid passages. The first and second passages do not intersect and are offset from one another. The first fluid passages are configured to direct fluid delivered to the horizontal bore from intake bores towards a reciprocating plunger. The second fluid passages are configured to direct fluid pressurized by the plunger towards a discharge bore.

Claims (33)

1. A fluid routing plug, comprising:

a body having a suction surface and an opposed discharge surface, in which the suction and discharge surfaces are joined by an outer intermediate surface; and in which the body has a central longitudinal axis that extends through the suction and discharge surfaces;

a plurality of suction fluid passages formed in the body, each of the suction fluid passages interconnecting the intermediate surface and the suction surface; and

a plurality of discharge fluid slots formed in the body, each of the discharge fluid slots interconnecting the suction and discharge surfaces of the body; in which at least a portion of at least one of the discharge fluid slots intersects a plane that contains the central longitudinal axis of the body;

in which each of the discharge fluid slots opens on the suction surface at a first opening and opens on the discharge surface at a second opening;

in which a position of the first and second openings is determined relative to a plane containing a first line perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis;

in which the first opening, when projected onto the plane, is positioned at a first distance from the central longitudinal axis and a second line interconnecting the first opening and the central longitudinal axis forms a first angle relative to the first line;

in which the second opening, when projected on the plane, is positioned at a second distance from the central longitudinal axis and a third line interconnecting the second opening and the central longitudinal axis forms a second angle relative to the first line; and

in which the first and second angles are different.

2. The fluid routing plug of claim 1 , in which at least a portion of each of the discharge slots has an arced cross-sectional shape.

3. The fluid routing plug of claim 1 , in which the first and second distances are different.

4. The fluid routing plug of claim 1 , in which the plurality of suction fluid passages and the plurality of discharge fluid slots do not intersect.

5. The fluid routing plug of claim 1 , in which the plurality of discharge fluid slots open into a counterbore formed in the discharge surface of the body.

6. The fluid routing plug of claim 1 , further comprising:

an axially-blind bore formed in the suction surface of the body; in which interconnection between the intermediate surface of the body and the suction surface is formed within the axially-blind bore.

7. The fluid routing plug of claim 1 , in which each of the suction fluid passages has a first longitudinal axis; and in which the first longitudinal axis does not intersect the central longitudinal axis of the body.

8. A fluid routing plug, comprising:

a body having a suction surface and an opposed discharge surface, in which the suction and discharge surfaces are joined by an outer intermediate surface; and in which the body has a central longitudinal axis that extends through the suction and discharge surfaces;

a plurality of suction fluid passages formed in the body, each of the suction fluid passages interconnecting the intermediate surface and the suction surface; and

a plurality of discharge fluid slots formed in the body, each of the discharge fluid slots interconnecting the suction and discharge surfaces of the body; and

in which each of the discharge fluid slots opens on the suction surface at a first opening and opens on the discharge surface at a second opening;

in which a position of the first and second openings is determined relative to a plane containing a first line perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis;

in which the first opening, when projected onto the plane, is positioned at a first distance from the central longitudinal axis and a second line interconnecting the first opening and the central longitudinal axis forms at a first angle relative to the first line; and

in which the second opening, when projected on the plane, is positioned at a second distance from the central longitudinal axis and a third line interconnecting the second opening and the central longitudinal axis forms at a second angle relative to the first line; and

in which the first and second angles are different.

9. The fluid routing plug of claim 8 , in which the first and second distances are different.

10. The fluid routing plug of claim 8 , in which at least a portion of each of the discharge fluid slots has an arced cross-sectional shape.

11. The fluid routing plug of claim 8 , in which the plurality of suction fluid passages and the plurality of discharge fluid slots do not intersect.

12. The fluid routing plug of claim 8 , in which the plurality of discharge fluid slots open into a counterbore formed in the discharge surface of the body.

13. The fluid routing plug of claim 8 , further comprising:

an axially-blind bore formed in the suction surface of the body; in which interconnection between the intermediate surface of the body and the suction surface is formed within the axially-blind bore.

14. The fluid routing plug of claim 8 , in which at least a portion of at least one of the discharge fluid slots intersects a further plane that contains the central longitudinal axis of the body.

15. The fluid routing plug of claim 8 , in which each of the suction fluid passages has a first longitudinal axis; and in which the first longitudinal axis does not intersect the central longitudinal axis.
