Abstract

An add-on device and method for an Endo-Tracheal Tube (ETT), the add-on device including a lengthy body having a major arc-shaped cross section sized and shaped to tightly fit over an ETT, at least one longitudinal cavity passing along the lengthy body, including a distal suction cavity ending with a suction inlet at a distal end of the lengthy body; and a distal suction outlet channel extending from a proximal end of the lengthy body, the channel is a continuous extension of the distal suction cavity and configured to provide suction to the distal suction cavity. The add-on device senses moisture at a distal end of the add-on device, and in case of detection of excessive wetness, provides suction to the distal end of the device through a cavity passing along the device, the suction is provided via a suction outlet channel extending from a proximal end of the device.

Claims (29)

1. An add-on device for a ventilation tube, the add-on device comprising:

a lengthy body having a longitudinal slit sized and shaped to fit over the ventilation tube while the ventilation tube is located within a trachea of a ventilated patient;

at least one longitudinal cavity passing along the lengthy body;

at least one liquid outlet continuous with the at least one longitudinal cavity, the at least one liquid outlet disposed at a location corresponding to a patient's mouth, when the add-on device is installed over the ventilation tube in a trachea of the patient and in use;

a moisture sensor that senses dryness at the location corresponding to the patient's mouth;

a controller that activates a liquid source for providing liquid to the at least one liquid outlet via the at least one longitudinal cavity according to an indication of dryness sensed by the moisture sensor; and

a mouth tube extending from an external surface of the lengthy body at the location corresponding to the patient's mouth, wherein the at least one liquid outlet is located at a distal end of the mouth tube.

2. The add-on device of claim 1 , wherein the mouth tube is connected to the lengthy body by an axis perpendicular to the lengthy body, the mouth suction tube tiltable about the axis to adjust the position of the mouth tube.

3. The add-on device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one liquid outlet is located on a surface of the lengthy body.

4. The add-on device of claim 1 , wherein the controller activates the liquid source for providing the liquid via the at least one liquid outlet as a spray.

5. The add-on device of claim 4 , wherein the controller activates an air compressor for pushing air forcefully into the liquid source that provides the liquid, for pushing the liquid forcefully through the at least one longitudinal cavity and the at least one liquid outlet for creating the spray.

6. The add-on device of claim 1 , wherein the moisture sensor comprises an impedance sensor.

7. The add-on device of claim 6 , wherein differentiation between dryness and wetness is determined according to impedance values sensed by the impedance sensor, wherein dryness is detected when the impedance value is above a first threshold and wetness is detected when the impedance value is below a second threshold.

8. The add-on device of claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one suction cavity passing along the lengthy body;

at least one suction inlet at a distal end of the lengthy body, each inlet continuous with a suction cavity;

at least one impedance sensor for detection of liquid, disposed at the distal end of the lengthy body;

wherein the controller that automatically activates suction in the at least one suction cavity according to the at least one impedance sensor disposed at the distal end of the lengthy body.

9. The add-on device of claim 1 , wherein each at least one longitudinal cavity passing along the lengthy body has an arc-shaped cross section.

10. The add-on device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one longitudinal cavity passing along the lengthy body passes within a core of thickness of a cross section of the lengthy body.

11. An add-on device for a ventilation tube, the add-on device comprising:

a lengthy body having a longitudinal slit sized and shaped to fit over the ventilation tube while the ventilation tube is located within a trachea of a ventilated patient;

at least one longitudinal cavity passing along the lengthy body;

at least one liquid outlet continuous with the at least one longitudinal cavity, the at least one liquid outlet disposed at a location corresponding to a patient's mouth, when the add-on device is installed over the ventilation tube in a trachea of the patient and in use;

a moisture sensor that senses dryness at the location corresponding to the patient's mouth; and

a controller that activates a liquid source for providing liquid to the at least one liquid outlet via the at least one longitudinal cavity according to an indication of dryness sensed by the moisture sensor;

a mouth suction tube extending from an external surface of the lengthy body at the location corresponding to the patient's mouth, the mouth suction tube continuous to at least one suction channel passing along the lengthy body for providing suction to the location corresponding to the patient's mouth.

12. The add-on device of claim 11 , wherein the controller switches a selection valve to select between the mouth suction tube and at least one other suction channel, and controls suction supply to the selected mouth suction tube or the selected at least one other suction channel.

13. The add-on device of claim 11 , wherein the moisture sensor further senses excessive fluid in the location corresponding to the patient's mouth, and the controller activates suction via the mouth suction tube.
