Abstract

A powered endoscopic surgical apparatus is provided and includes a handle including a housing, a power source supported in the housing; an endoscopic portion extending distally from the housing of the handle; an end effector assembly coupled to a distal end of the endoscopic portion, the end effector assembly including a pair of jaws configured to perform a surgical function; a driving member; a drive source including a motor powered by the power source and connected to the driving member; and a gear assembly engaged with the motor. The gear assembly including a gear rack provided on the driving member; and a main gear operatively connected with the gear rack, the motor spinning the main gear such that rotary motion of the main gear moves the driving member in an axial direction such that the driving member actuates the end effector to perform the surgical function.

Claims (30)

1. A surgical stapler, comprising:

a first jaw comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a channel extending between the proximal end of the first jaw and the distal end of the first jaw, the channel configured to receive a staple cartridge assembly: and

a second jaw comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and an anvil having at least one anvil surface, the at least one anvil surface having at least one staple forming surface, wherein at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw is movable with respect to the other;

wherein the staple cartridge assembly comprises a sled, staple pushers, and at least two rows of staples, wherein the sled is configured to cause the staple pushers to translate vertically to urge the staples against the anvil surface when the sled moves from the proximal end of the staple cartridge assembly to the distal end of the staple cartridge assembly; and

wherein the surgical stapler is configured to delay movement of the sled during a time period following a user initiating a firing command of the surgical stapler.

2. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein the first jaw and the second jaw are in a closed position during the time period.

3. The surgical stapler of claim 2 , wherein the time period is configured to allow expulsion of tissue fluid from tissue.

4. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , further comprising a controller configured to delay movement of the sled during the time period.

5. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein the duration of the time period is between 10 to 45 seconds.

6. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , further comprising an indicator configured to display a visual indication of the amount of the time period that has elapsed following the user initiating the firing command of the surgical stapler.

7. The surgical stapler of claim 6 , wherein the indicator comprises one or more lights, a linear indicator, a digital display, an analog display, and/or a graphical display.

8. The surgical stapler of claim 6 , wherein the indicator comprises a display configured to display a countdown of the time period.

9. The surgical stapler of claim 6 , wherein the indicator is disposed on the surgical stapler at a position visible to a user of the surgical stapler during use of the surgical stapler.

10. The surgical stapler of claim 6 , further comprising a housing surrounding at least a portion of the surgical stapler; wherein the indicator is disposed on an outer surface of the housing.

11. The surgical stapler of claim 6 , wherein the indicator is configured to display a visual indication of the progress of the firing of the surgical stapler.

12. The surgical stapler of claim 11 , wherein the visual indication of the progress of the firing of the surgical stapler indicates the distance the sled has moved from the proximal end of the first jaw to the distal end of the first jaw.

13. The surgical stapler of claim 12 , wherein the indicator is configured to display the visual indication upon completion of a firing of the surgical stapler.

14. The surgical stapler of claim 13 , wherein the visual indication upon completion of firing comprises a color change of the visual indication of the progress of firing.

15. The surgical stapler of claim 12 , further comprising a sensor operatively coupled to the indicator; wherein the indicator is configured to receive a signal from the sensor corresponding to the progress of the firing of the surgical stapler.

16. The surgical stapler of claim 12 , wherein the indicator comprises a plurality of lights, a linear indicator, a digital display, and/or a graphical display.

17. A method for stapling tissue comprising:

clamping the tissue between a first jaw and a second jaw of a surgical stapler, the first jaw comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a channel extending between the proximal end of the first jaw and the distal end of the first jaw, the channel configured to receive a staple cartridge assembly, and the second jaw comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and an anvil having at least one anvil surface, the at least one anvil surface having at least one staple forming surface, wherein the staple cartridge assembly comprises a sled, staple pushers, and at least two rows of staples; and

receiving a firing command from a user;

delaying movement of the sled during a time period following receiving the firing command;

firing the surgical stapler after the time period, wherein the firing comprises moving the sled from the proximal end of the staple cartridge assembly to the distal end of the staple cartridge assembly, wherein the sled is configured to cause the stapler pushers to translate vertically to urge the staples against the anvil surface when the sled moves from the proximal end of the staple cartridge assembly to the distal end of the staple cartridge assembly.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising expelling tissue fluid from the tissue during the time period.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein the duration of the time period is between 10 to 45 seconds.

20. The method of claim 17 , further comprising displaying a visual indication of the amount of the time period that has elapsed following receiving the firing command.

21. The method of claim 17 , further comprising displaying a visual indication of the progress of the firing of the surgical stapler.

22. The method of claim 17 , further comprising displaying a countdown of the time period; and displaying a linear indication of the progress of the firing of the surgical stapler, wherein the linear indication of the progress of the firing changes color upon completion of firing.
