Abstract

Disclosed are systems and methods to deliver location restricted content to devices that do not have a location component, such as a Global Positioning System component. A location aware device may send to a content delivery service, location information determined by a location component of the location aware device and receive, from the content delivery service, an encrypted access token. The location aware device may then send the access token to a non-location aware device that is on a same local area network as the location aware device. The non-location aware device may provide the access token to the content delivery service along with a request for location restricted content. The content delivery service may use the access token provided by the non-location aware device to verify that the non-location aware device is within a defined area for which the requested location restricted content is allowed for presentation.

Claims (104)

the encrypted location token is included in the access token; and

the encrypted location token cannot be decrypted by the location aware device or the non-location aware device.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the content delivery service is further configured to at least:

generate a time to live (“TTL”) indicative of a time duration for which the access token is valid; and

include the TTL in the access token.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the content delivery service is further configured to at least:

determine, based at least in part on the TTL included in the access token, that the access token is valid.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second program instructions, when executed by the second processor, further cause the second processor to at least:

send, via the local area network, a message requesting the access token.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the second program instructions, when executed by the second processor, further cause the second processor to at least:

receive, from a second location aware device and via the local area network, a second access token; and

send, to the content delivery service, the access token, the second access token, and the request for the location restricted content; and

the content delivery service is further configured to at least:

determine, based at least in part on the access token and the second access token received from the non-location aware device, that the non-location aware device is within the first defined area.

7. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving, at a content delivery service and from a first device that is remote from the content delivery service, a first location information indicative of a location of the first device within a first defined area;

generating, at the content delivery service and based at least in part on the first location information, an access token associated with the first defined area;

sending, from the content delivery service and to the first device, the access token;

receiving, at the content delivery service and from a second device that is different than the first device and remote from the content delivery service, the access token and a request for a content, wherein the content is location restricted such that delivery of the content by the content delivery service is enabled for the first defined area and disabled for a second defined area that is different than the first defined area;

determining, based at least in part on the access token received from the second device, that the second device is within the first defined area; and

in response to determining that the second device is within the first defined area, sending the content to the second device for presentation by the second device.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein generating the access token, includes:

encrypting the first location information to form an encrypted location token; and

including the encrypted location token in the access token.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , further comprising:

generating a time to live (“TTL”) for the access token;

forming the access token to include the encrypted location token and the TTL; and

digitally signing the access token; and

wherein:

the TTL is accessible to the first device and the second device; and

the encrypted location token cannot be decrypted by the first device or the second device.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein generating the access token, includes:

storing an association between the first location information and a unique identifier; and

including the unique identifier in the access token.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , further comprising:

in response to receiving the access token and the request for content from the second device, associating the access token with the second device.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , further comprising:

determining, based at least in part on the access token received from the second device, that the second device is within the first defined area; and

in response to determining that the second device is within the first defined area, sending a notification to the second device indicating that the second content is not available for presentation.
