Abstract

A surgical controlling system for controlling the 3D spatial position of at least one articulating surgical tool includes a controller configured to provide instructions to control movement of the surgical tool. The controller comprises a processor to determine a location of the surgical tool using at least one location estimating feature and to determine movement of the surgical tool using a database in communication with at least one movement detection feature. The location estimating feature is configured to real-time locate the 3D spatial position of the surgical tool at any given time t, and the movement detection feature is configured to detect movement of the surgical tool.

Claims (10)

1 . A surgical controlling system, comprising:

at least one endoscope having an articulating distal portion of shape and size to be inserted into a surgical environment of a human body;

at least one processor including an image processing algorithm configured, when executed, to receive real-time images of said surgical environment captured by said endoscope and to estimate in real time a real-time proximity distance between two surgical tools in said surgical environment; and

a controller configured to cause a maneuvering subsystem to change the articulation of said endoscope in accordance with a proximity rule to change the articulation when the real-time proximity distance between the surgical tools falls below a predetermined proximity distance.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said endoscope has articulations in a region selected from a group consisting of at a tip of said endoscope, along a body of endoscope, and any combination thereof.

3 . A method of using a structured-light based surgical controlling system in a surgical environment, comprising steps of:

inserting at least one surgical tool into said surgical environment;

displaying a 3D image of a field of view via said touchscreen;

receiving real-time images of said surgical environment and, based on said images, estimating a real-time proximity distance between two surgical tools in said surgical environment; and

articulating said endoscope in accordance with a proximity rule to change an articulation of said endoscope when the real-time proximity distance between the surgical tools falls below a predetermined proximity distance.
