Abstract

A patient interface for delivery of a supply of pressurised air or breathable gas to an entrance of a patient's airways comprising: a cushion member that includes a retaining structure and a seal-forming structure permanently connected to the retaining structure; a frame member attachable to the retaining structure; and a positioning and stabilising structure attachable to the frame member.

Claims (121)

1. A patient interface for providing a flow of air at a therapeutic pressure above ambient air pressure to a patient throughout the patient's respiratory cycle to treat sleep disordered breathing, the patient interface comprising:

a frame constructed from a first material, the frame comprising a plurality of vent holes configured to discharge air to atmosphere to wash out exhaled carbon dioxide;

a tube having a first end that is permanently connected to the frame and a second end rotatably connected to a swivel, the swivel being configured to be connected to a gas delivery tube to receive the flow of air during use;

a cushion comprising:

a seal-forming structure configured to contact and seal against the patient's face around the patient's nares to deliver the flow of air to the patient's nares during use, the seal-forming structure being configured to leave the patient's mouth uncovered in use, and the seal-forming structure being constructed from a silicone material that is more flexible than the first material; and

a base removably connected to the frame and constructed from a second material that is more rigid than the silicone material;

a rigidiser arm assembly comprising a pair of laterally extending rigidiser arm portions and a mechanical clip to releasably attach the rigidiser arm assembly to the frame; and

a first length-adjustable strap constructed from a textile material and removably connected to the rigidiser arm assembly.

2. The patient interface of claim 1 , wherein the seal-forming structure is a nasal cradle, and

wherein the seal-forming structure consists of a single hole configured to direct the flow of air to both of the patient's nares.

3. The patient interface of claim 1 , wherein the first length-adjustable strap is elastically stretchable.

4. The patient interface of claim 1 , wherein the base and the frame are structured be removably connected with an audible snap fit.

5. The patient interface of claim 1 , wherein the frame includes a rim that extends away from the frame in a direction opposite the tube, the rim forming an opening, and

wherein an inner periphery of the base is configured to surround an outer periphery of the rim when the base is removably connected to the frame.

6. The patient interface of claim 1 , wherein a first tab and a second tab extend from the base,

wherein the frame comprises a first slot and a second slot each configured to receive a corresponding one of the first tab and the second tab to removably connect the base and the frame,

wherein the first tab and the first slot are laterally wider than the second tab and the second slot, respectively, such that only the first tab and the first slot can be removably connected and only the second tab and the second slot can be removably connected, and

wherein the first tab and the first slot are positioned superior to the second tab and the second slot relative to the patient when the patient interface is worn by the patient.

7. The patient interface of claim 1 , wherein the seal-forming structure and the base are permanently connected, integrally bonded, or mechanically interlocked.

8. The patient interface of claim 1 , wherein the frame is symmetric across a first plane,

wherein each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions comprises a first curve such that a first portion of each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions extends away from the first plane at the first curve, and

wherein each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions comprises a second portion that extends from the first portion, the second portion having a second curve such that a surface of the second portion that faces the first plane is concave and configured to be positioned against a corresponding one of the patient's cheeks in use.

9. The patient interface of claim 8 , wherein the second portion of each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions is upwardly curved such that in use the second portion is positioned between corresponding ones of the patient's eyes and ears.

10. The patient interface of claim 1 , further comprising a second length-adjustable strap configured to engage the patient's head across the parietal bones in use, and

wherein the first length-adjustable strap is configured to engage the patient's head proximal to the occipital bone in use.

11. The patient interface of claim 1 , wherein the mechanical clip is configured to releasably attach the rigidiser arm assembly to the frame with a snap-fit.

12. The patient interface of claim 1 , wherein the first end of the tube is non-rotatably connected to the frame without an elbow.

13. The patient interface of claim 1 , wherein:

the seal-forming structure is a nasal cradle,

the seal-forming structure consists of a single hole configured to direct the flow of air to both of the patient's nares,

the first length-adjustable strap is elastically stretchable,

the base and the frame are structured be removably connected with an audible snap fit,

the frame includes a rim that extends away from the frame in a direction opposite the tube, the rim forming an opening,

an inner periphery of the base is configured to surround an outer periphery of the rim when the base is removably connected to the frame,

a first tab and a second tab extend from the base,

the frame comprises a first slot and a second slot each configured to receive a corresponding one of the first tab and the second tab to removably connect the base and the frame,

the seal-forming structure and the base are permanently connected, integrally bonded, or mechanically interlocked,

the frame is symmetric across a first plane,

each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions comprises a first curve such that a first portion of each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions extends away from the first plane at the first curve,

each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions comprises a second portion that extends from the first portion, the second portion having a second curve such that a surface of the second portion that faces the first plane is concave and configured to be positioned against a corresponding one of the patient's cheeks in use,

the first length-adjustable strap is configured to engage the patient's head proximal to the occipital bone in use, and

the first end of the tube is non-rotatably connected to the frame without an elbow.

14. A patient interface for providing a flow of air at a therapeutic pressure above ambient air pressure to a patient throughout the patient's respiratory cycle to treat sleep disordered breathing, the patient interface comprising:

a frame comprising a plurality of vent holes configured to discharge air to atmosphere to wash out exhaled carbon dioxide;

a tube having a first end that is non-rotatably connected to the frame without an elbow and a second end rotatably connected to a swivel, the swivel being configured to be connected to a gas delivery tube to receive the flow of air during use;

a cushion comprising:

a seal-forming structure configured to contact and seal against the patient's face around the patient's nares to deliver the flow of air to the patient's nares during use, the seal-forming structure being configured to leave the patient's mouth uncovered in use, and the seal-forming structure being constructed from silicone and more flexible than the frame; and

a base that is more rigid than the seal-forming structure, the base being permanently connected to the seal-forming structure and removably connected to the frame;

a pair of laterally extending rigidiser arm portions attached to the frame, each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions extending past the seal-forming structure in a direction towards the patient in use; and

a first length-adjustable strap constructed from a textile material and removably connected to the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions.

15. The patient interface of claim 14 , wherein the seal-forming structure is a nasal cradle, and

wherein the first length-adjustable strap is elastically stretchable.

16. The patient interface of claim 15 , wherein the seal-forming structure consists of a single hole configured to direct the flow of air to both of the patient's nares.

17. The patient interface of claim 14 , wherein the seal-forming structure is nasal pillows, and

wherein the first length-adjustable strap is elastically stretchable.

18. The patient interface of claim 14 , wherein the frame includes a rim that extends away from the frame in a direction opposite the tube, the rim forming an opening, and

wherein an inner periphery of the base is configured to surround an outer periphery of the rim when the base is removably connected to the frame.

19. The patient interface of claim 14 , wherein a first tab and a second tab extend from the base,

wherein the frame comprises a first slot and a second slot each configured to receive a corresponding one of the first tab and the second tab to removably connect the base and the frame,

wherein the first tab and the first slot are laterally wider than the second tab and the second slot, respectively, such that only the first tab and the first slot can be removably connected and only the second tab and the second slot can be removably connected, and

wherein the first tab and the first slot are positioned superior to the second tab and the second slot relative to the patient when the patient interface is worn by the patient.

20. The patient interface of claim 17 , wherein the frame is symmetric across a first plane,

wherein each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions comprises a first curve such that a first portion of each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions extends away from the first plane at the first curve, and

wherein each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions comprises a second portion that extends from the first portion, the second portion having a second curve such that a surface of the second portion that faces the first plane is concave and configured to be positioned against a corresponding one of the patient's cheeks in use.

21. The patient interface of claim 20 , wherein the second portion of each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions is upwardly curved such that in use the second portion is positioned between corresponding ones of the patient's eyes and ears.

22. The patient interface of claim 17 , wherein the frame is symmetric across a first plane,

wherein the frame has a port that is symmetric across the first plane, the first end of the tube being non-rotatably connected to the frame without an elbow at the port.

23. The patient interface of claim 14 , wherein each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions is joined to the frame separately from one another, and

wherein each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions is permanently joined to the frame with an overmolded connection.

24. The patient interface of claim 14 , further comprising a second length-adjustable strap configured to engage the patient's head across the parietal bones in use, and

wherein the first length-adjustable strap is configured to engage the patient's head proximal to the occipital bone in use.

25. The patient interface of claim 14 , wherein a rigidiser arm assembly comprises the pair of laterally extending rigidiser arm portions and a mechanical clip to releasably attach the rigidiser arm assembly to the frame.

26. The patient interface of claim 25 , wherein the mechanical clip is configured to releasably attach the rigidiser arm assembly to the frame with a snap-fit.

27. The patient interface of claim 14 , wherein the base and the frame are structured be removably connected with an audible snap fit.

28. The patient interface of claim 14 , wherein:

the seal-forming structure is a nasal cradle,

the seal-forming structure consists of a single hole configured to direct the flow of air to both of the patient's nares,

the first length-adjustable strap is elastically stretchable,

the frame includes a rim that extends away from the frame in a direction opposite the tube, the rim forming an opening,

an inner periphery of the base is configured to surround an outer periphery of the rim when the base is removably connected to the frame,

a first tab and a second tab extend from the base,

the frame comprises a first slot and a second slot each configured to receive a corresponding one of the first tab and the second tab to removably connect the base and the frame,

the frame is symmetric across a first plane,

each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions comprises a first curve such that a first portion of each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions extends away from the first plane at the first curve,

each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions comprises a second portion that extends from the first portion, the second portion having a second curve such that a surface of the second portion that faces the first plane is concave and configured to be positioned against a corresponding one of the patient's cheeks in use,

the frame has a port that is symmetric across the first plane, the first end of the tube being non-rotatably connected to the frame without an elbow at the port,

a rigidiser arm assembly comprises the pair of laterally extending rigidiser arm portions and a mechanical clip to releasably attach the rigidiser arm assembly to the frame, and

the base and the frame are structured be removably connected with an audible snap fit.

29. The patient interface of claim 14 , further comprising a second length-adjustable strap configured to engage the patient's head across the parietal bones in use,

wherein:

the seal-forming structure is a nasal cradle,

the first length-adjustable strap is elastically stretchable,

the frame includes a rim that extends away from the frame in a direction opposite the tube, the rim forming an opening,

an inner periphery of the base is configured to surround an outer periphery of the rim when the base is removably connected to the frame,

the frame is symmetric across a first plane,

each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions comprises a first curve such that a first portion of each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions extends away from the first plane at the first curve,

each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions comprises a second portion that extends from the first portion, the second portion having a second curve such that a surface of the second portion that faces the first plane is concave and configured to be positioned against a corresponding one of the patient's cheeks in use,

the second portion of each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions is upwardly curved such that in use the second portion is positioned between corresponding ones of the patient's eyes and ears,

the frame has a port that is symmetric across the first plane, the first end of the tube being non-rotatably connected to the frame without an elbow at the port,

each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions is joined to the frame separately from one another,

each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions is permanently joined to the frame with an overmolded connection, and

the first length-adjustable strap is configured to engage the patient's head proximal to the occipital bone in use.

30. The patient interface of claim 14 , further comprising a second length-adjustable strap configured to engage the patient's head across the parietal bones in use,

wherein:

the seal-forming structure is nasal pillows,

the first length-adjustable strap is elastically stretchable,

the frame includes a rim that extends away from the frame in a direction opposite the tube, the rim forming an opening,

an inner periphery of the base is configured to surround an outer periphery of the rim when the base is removably connected to the frame,

a first tab and a second tab extend from the base,

the frame comprises a first slot and a second slot each configured to receive a corresponding one of the first tab and the second tab to removably connect the base and the frame,

the first tab and the first slot are laterally wider than the second tab and the second slot, respectively, such that only the first tab and the first slot can be removably connected and only the second tab and the second slot can be removably connected,

the first tab and the first slot are positioned superior to the second tab and the second slot relative to the patient when the patient interface is worn by the patient,

the frame is symmetric across a first plane,

each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions comprises a first curve such that a first portion of each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions extends away from the first plane at the first curve,

each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions comprises a second portion that extends from the first portion, the second portion having a second curve such that a surface of the second portion that faces the first plane is concave and configured to be positioned against a corresponding one of the patient's cheeks in use,

the second portion of each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions is upwardly curved such that in use the second portion is positioned between corresponding ones of the patient's eyes and ears,

the frame has a port that is symmetric across the first plane, the first end of the tube being non-rotatably connected to the frame without an elbow at the port,

each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions is joined to the frame separately from one another,

each of the laterally extending rigidiser arm portions is permanently joined to the frame with an overmolded connection,

the first length-adjustable strap is configured to engage the patient's head proximal to the occipital bone in use, and

the base and the frame are structured be removably connected with an audible snap fit.
