Abstract

An ear-worn electronic device comprises a microphone configured to sense sound in an acoustic environment, an acoustic transducer, and a non-volatile memory configured to store a plurality of parameter value sets, each of the parameter value sets associated with a different acoustic environment. A control input is configured to receive a control input signal produced by at least one of a user-actuatable control of the ear-worn electronic device and an external electronic device communicatively coupled to the ear-worn electronic device in response to a user action. A processor is configured to classify the acoustic environment using the sensed sound and determine a listening intent preference of the user. The processor is configured to apply, in response to the control input signal, one of the parameter value sets appropriate for the classification and the listening intent preference of the user.

Claims (30)

1. A method implemented by an ear-worn electronic device configured to be worn in, on or about an ear of a user, the method comprising:

receiving an adaptation request in response to a user action;

capturing a sample of ambient sound in response to the adaptation request;

receiving a listening intent preference of the user;

determining a set of audio processing parameters based on the ambient sound and the listening intent preference; and

applying the set of audio processing parameters to a captured audio stream to deliver processed sound through the device, the processed sound being consistent with the listening intent preference of the user.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the listening intent preference comprises receiving a preference between two or more listening intent preferences.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the listening intent preference comprises receiving a preference to enhance speech.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the listening intent preference comprises receiving a preference to reduce noise.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the listening intent preference comprises receiving a preference to optimize sound for the user's acoustic environment.

6. The method of claim 1 , comprising receiving the listening intent preference via a control input of the device.

7. The method of claim 1 , comprising receiving the listening intent preference via an external electronic device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adaptation request is generated by an accelerometer or an inertial measurement unit of the device.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adaptation request is generated by an external electronic device.

10. An ear-worn electronic device configured to be worn in, on or about an ear of a user, comprising:

a control input configured to receive an adaptation request in response to a user action;

at least one microphone configured to capture a sample of ambient sound in response to the adaptation request;

an acoustic transducer;

a non-volatile memory configured to store audio processing parameters; and

a processor operably coupled to the microphone, the acoustic transducer, the non-volatile memory, and the control input, the processor configured to determine a listening intent preference of the user and a set of audio processing parameters based on the ambient sound and the listening intent preference, the processor configured to apply the set of audio processing parameters to a captured audio stream to deliver processed sound through the device, the processed sound being consistent with the listening intent preference of the user.

11. The device of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to determine the listening intent preference of the user in response to a sensor signal generated by an accelerometer of the device.

12. The device of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to determine the listening intent preference of the user in response to a sensor signal generated by an inertial measurement unit of the device.

13. The device of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to determine the listening intent preference of the user in response to a sensor signal generated by a physiologic sensor of the device.

14. The device of claim 10 , wherein the listening intent preference of the user is a preference to optimize sound for the user's acoustic environment.

15. The device of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to determine the listening intent preference of the user in response to a sensor signal.

16. The device of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to determine the listening intent preference of the user in response to a user input.

17. The device of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to determine the listening intent preference of the user in response to a sensor signal, generated by the microphone.

18. The device of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to determine the listening intent preference of the user in response to a user input received from an external electronic device.

19. The device of claim 10 , wherein the listening intent preference of the user is a preference to enhance speech intelligibility.

20. The device of claim 10 , wherein the listening intent preference of the user is a preference to reduce noise.
