Abstract

A fluid heating system including a burner unit is operated based on feedback control loops. The fluid heating system comprises a burner unit configured to heat a fluid, a sensor configured to sense a characteristic of the appliance, and a controller coupled to the burner unit and the sensor. The controller includes an electronic processor and a memory. The controller is configured to receive a first signal corresponding to the characteristic from the sensor, determine, based on the first signal, a first feedback loop control, control combustion of the burner unit based on the first feedback loop control, determine, based on the first feedback loop control, a second feedback loop control, and control combustion of the burner unit based on the second feedback loop control.

Claims (25)

1. A fluid heating system comprising:

a burner unit configured to heat a fluid, the burner unit including at least one adjustable device;

a sensor configured to sense a characteristic of the fluid heating system; and

a controller coupled to the burner unit and the sensor, the controller including a processor and memory, the controller configured to control combustion of the burner unit based on a first and a second feedback loop control,

wherein the first feedback loop control comprises:

receiving a first signal corresponding to the characteristic from the sensor;

determining, based on the first signal, a deviation of the characteristic from a target value of the characteristic;

changing a first trim value based on said deviation; and

applying the first trim value in a control signal to the at least one adjustable device in order to drive the characteristic closer to the target value of the characteristic, and

wherein the second feedback loop control comprises:

determining a deviation of the first trim value from a target first trim value;

retrieving one or more trim points from a trim table;

adjusting the one or more trim points based on said deviation;

calculating a second trim value based on the adjusted one or more trim points; and

applying the second trim value in a control signal to the at least one adjustable device in order to drive the first trim value closer to the target first trim value.

2. The fluid heating system of claim 1 , wherein the controller's operation of the second feedback control loop increases the deviation of the characteristic from the target value of the characteristic.

3. The fluid heating system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more trim points includes a first trim point corresponding to a first modulation value of the burner unit and a second trim point corresponding to a second modulation value of the burner unit.

4. The fluid heating system of claim 3 , wherein the controller is configured to:

select the first and second trim points based on a current modulation value of the burner unit being between the first and second modulation values.

5. The fluid heating system of claim 4 , wherein the current modulation value is reverse interpolated into the trim table.

6. The fluid heating system of claim 1 , wherein the first trim value is independent of at least one of a firing rate of the burner unit and a modulation percentage of the burner unit.

7. The fluid heating system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjustable device includes at least one of a gas damper, an air damper, and a fan.

8. The fluid heating system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is at least one of an O2 sensor and a NOx sensor.

9. The fluid heating system of claim 1 , wherein the target first trim value is 1.0.

10. The fluid heating system of claim 1 , wherein a magnitude of the deviation of the first trim value from the target trim value is determined based on an inverse relationship between the first trim value and the one or more trim points.
