Abstract

A process for the separation of electrolyte from the carbon in a solid carbon/electrolyte cathode product formed at the cathode during molten carbonate electrolysis. The processes allows for easy separation of the solid carbon product from the electrolyte without any observed detrimental effect on the structure and/or stability of the resulting solid carbon nanomaterial.

Claims (26)

1. A system for separating an electrolyte from a mixed product including a solid carbon, the system comprising:

a porous cathode;

a force applicator; and

a collection chamber,

wherein the force applicator is configured to apply a force to the mixed product to move the electrolyte to the collection chamber, and the porous cathode is configured to separate the solid carbon from the electrolyte by the electrolyte moving through the porous cathode into the collection chamber.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a porous interface configured to separate the electrolyte from the mixed product.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the porous interface is a filter.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein said system is configured to operate in an environment that is free of or substantially free of oxygen.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the environment that is substantially free of oxygen comprises less than 1000 ppm of oxygen.

6. The system of claim 4 , wherein the environment is comprised of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon, methane, ammonia, hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide, and any combination thereof.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mixed product is a molten gel.

8. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a vacuum configured to move the electrolyte to the collection chamber.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to cool the mixed product after formation by electrolysis and reheated prior to the force applicator applying the force.

10. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a transport apparatus configured to move the mixed product to an extraction chamber prior to the force applicator applying the force.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the electrolyte is not recirculated via a recirculation loop.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the solid carbon has an average thickness greater than 1 millimeter.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the solid carbon comprises greater than about 80% carbon nano-materials.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the nano-materials comprise nano-fibers, nano-tubes, nano-onions, nano-platelets, or nano-scaffolds.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the nano-materials comprise graphene.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to produce a purified product of the solid carbon after the electrolyte is separated, the purified product comprising greater than about 85% carbon nano-materials.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to produce a purified product of the solid carbon after the electrolyte is separated, the purified product comprising greater than about 90% nano-materials.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to produce a purified product of the solid carbon after the electrolyte is separated, the purified product comprising greater than about 95% carbon nano-materials.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the solid carbon is formed from raw carbon nano-material that agglomerates during a carbonate electrolysis and the separation comprises filtering the solid carbon with a filter having pores larger than the solid carbon.

20. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to produce a purified product of the solid carbon comprising a paste, after the electrolyte is separated.

21. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an electrolysis chamber, wherein the porous cathode separates the electrolysis chamber and the collection chamber.

22. The system of claim 1 , wherein the porous cathode has a pore size smaller than a matrix size of the solid carbon.
