Abstract

A method and User Equipment (UE) for estimating locations of obstacles to signal transmission in a wireless communication network is disclosed. The method involves at the UE in communication with the network, in response to receiving a reference signal from a neighboring node via a non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmission, transmitting an identification of the neighboring node to network equipment implementing the wireless communications network to facilitate estimating locations of the obstacles to signal transmission based on estimates of the location of the UE and the neighboring node.

Claims (35)

1. A method for estimating locations of obstacles to signal transmission in a wireless communication network, the method comprising:

at a User Equipment (UE) in communication with the wireless communication network, in response to receiving a reference signal from a neighboring node via a non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmission, transmitting an identification of the neighboring node to network equipment implementing the wireless communication network to facilitate estimating the locations of the obstacles to signal transmission based on estimates of a location of the UE and a location of the neighboring node,

wherein the identification of the neighboring node is not transmitted in response to receiving the reference signal from the neighboring node via a line-of-sight (LoS) transmission.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the neighboring node comprises a neighboring UE and the NLoS transmission comprises a sidelink transmission.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the UE and the neighboring UE each comprise any one of a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), a mobile station, a mobile subscriber unit, a cellular telephone, a station (STA), a machine type communication device (MTC), a personal digital assistant (PDA), a smartphone, a laptop computer, a touchpad, a wireless sensor, or a consumer electronics device.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising processing the reference signal received at the UE from the neighboring node using a line-of-sight/non-line-of-sight (LoS/NLoS) prediction module to generate an inference as to whether the received reference signal was received via a LoS transmission or a NLoS transmission.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising receiving LoS/NLoS prediction parameters at the UE from the network equipment for configuring the LoS/NLoS prediction module on the UE.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising generating location information at the UE by receiving Global Positioning System (GPS) signals and further comprising transmitting the location information to the network equipment to facilitate estimation of the location of the UE.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein transmitting the identification of the neighboring node comprises transmitting an anonymized identifier included in the reference signal received by the UE from the neighboring node.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the NLoS transmission comprises a downlink transmission.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmission comprises a reference signal transmission having a propagation path that passes through an obstacle that acts as a shadowing obstruction between the neighboring node and the UE.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining whether the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmission comprises a redirected reference signal transmission that has been reflected from the neighboring node to the UE by an obstacle.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein determining whether the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmission comprises a redirected reference signal transmission comprises:

generating a power delay profile (PDP) for the received reference signal at the UE; and

using the PDP to determine whether the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmission of the reference signal is associated with an indirect propagation path due to the reflection by the obstacle.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein generating a power delay profile comprises:

generating range estimates indicative of a range associated with a reference signal received from the neighboring node; and

determining a received power associated with the received reference signal.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein transmitting the identification of the neighboring node to network equipment comprises transmitting an indication that the reference signal associated with the NLoS transmission from the neighboring node was via an indirect propagation path.

14. A User Equipment (UE) for use in a wireless communication network, the UE comprising:

a transmitter and a receiver;

a processor in communication with the transmitter and receiver; and

a processor-readable memory in communication with the processor and storing processor-executable instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform a method comprising:

in response to receiving a reference signal at the receiver from a neighboring node via a non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmission, causing the transmitter to transmit an identification of the neighboring node to network equipment implementing the wireless communication network to facilitate estimating locations of obstacles to signal transmission based on estimates of a location of the UE and a location of the neighboring node,

wherein the identification of the neighboring node is not transmitted in response to receiving the reference signal at the receiver from the neighboring node via a line-of-sight (LoS) transmission.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining whether the received reference signal is received via the NLoS transmission,

wherein transmitting the identification in response to receiving the reference signal from the neighboring node via the NLoS transmission comprises transmitting the identification only in response to determining that the received reference signal is received via the NLoS transmission.

16. The method of claim 4 , wherein transmitting the identification in response to receiving the reference signal from the neighboring node via the NLoS transmission comprises transmitting the identification only where the inference is that the received reference signal is received via the NLoS transmission.

17. The UE of claim 14 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, further cause the processor to process the reference signal received at the UE from the neighboring node using a line-of-sight/non-line-of-sight (LoS/NLoS) prediction module to generate an inference as to whether the received reference signal was received via a LoS transmission or a NLoS transmission.

18. The UE of claim 17 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, further cause the processor to receive LoS/NLoS prediction parameters at the UE from the network equipment for configuring the LoS/NLoS prediction module on the UE.

19. The UE of claim 14 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, further cause the processor to determine whether the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmission comprises a redirected reference signal transmission that has been reflected from the neighboring node to the UE by an obstacle.

20. A non-transitory processor-readable memory storing processor-executable instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform a method comprising:

at a User Equipment (UE) in communication with a wireless communication network, in response to receiving a reference signal from a neighboring node via a non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmission, transmitting an identification of the neighboring node to network equipment implementing the wireless communication network to facilitate estimating locations of obstacles to signal transmission in the wireless communication network based on estimates of a location of the UE and a location of the neighboring node,

wherein the identification of the neighboring node is not transmitted in response to receiving the reference signal from the neighboring node via a line-of-sight (LoS) transmission.
