Abstract

The present disclosure provides topical biophotonic materials and methods useful in phototherapy. In particular, the topical biophotonic materials of the present disclosure include a cohesive matrix, and at least one chromophore which can absorb and emit light from within the topical biophotonic material, wherein the topical biophotonic material is elastic. The topical biophotonic materials and the methods of the present disclosure are useful for promoting wound healing and skin rejuvenation, as well as treating acne and various other skin disorders.

Claims (28)

1 . A method for biophotonic treatment of a skin disorder, the method comprising:

placing a biophotonic material over a target skin tissue, wherein the biophotonic material comprises at least one chromophore and a cohesive matrix; and

applying light through the biophotonic material, wherein the light has a wavelength that overlaps with an absorption spectrum of the at least one chromophore;

wherein said biophotonic material emits fluorescence that promotes healing of said skin disorder.

2 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the biophotonic material is operatively coupled to a light source.

3 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the biophotonic material functions as a waveguide and transmits light.

4 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the biophotonic material is elastic.

5 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the biophotonic material is rigid or semi-rigid.

6 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the at least one chromophore is a xanthene dye.

7 . The method as defined in claim 6 , wherein the xanthene dye is Eosin Y, Erythrosine B, Fluorescein, Rose Bengal, or Phloxin B.

8 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the cohesive matrix comprises at least one polymer.

9 . The method as defined in claim 8 , wherein the at least one polymer is selected from a cross-linked polyacrylic polymer, a hyaluronate, a hydrated polymer, a hydrophilic polymer and a liposoluble polymer.

10 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the biophotonic material further comprises an oxygen-rich compound.

11 . The method as defined in claim 10 , wherein the oxygen-rich compound is selected from hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide and benzoyl peroxide.

12 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the biophotonic material has a thickness of about 0.1 mm to about 5 mm, about 0.5 mm to about 20 mm, or about 1 mm to about 10 mm.

13 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the biophotonic material comprises one or more waveguide extending at least partially through the biophotonic material.

14 . The method as defined in claim 13 , wherein the one or more waveguide is operatively connected to a light source.

15 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the skin disorder is selected from acne, eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis.

16 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the biophotonic material is peelable and is peeled off.

17 . A method for biophotonic treatment of acne, the method comprising:

placing a biophotonic material over a target skin tissue, wherein the biophotonic material comprises at least one chromophore and a cohesive matrix; and

applying light through the biophotonic material, wherein the light has a wavelength that overlaps with an absorption spectrum of the at least one chromophore;

wherein said biophotonic material emits fluorescence that treats the acne.

18 . A method for promoting skin rejuvenation, the method comprising:

placing a biophotonic material over a target skin tissue, wherein the biophotonic material comprises at least one chromophore and a cohesive matrix; and

applying light through the biophotonic material, wherein the light has a wavelength that overlaps with an absorption spectrum of the at least one chromophore;

wherein said biophotonic material emits fluorescence that promotes skin rejuvenation.

19 . The method as defined in claim 18 , wherein the biophotonic material is a mask.
