Abstract

In accordance with presently disclosed embodiments, a hybrid drive system that uses multiple sources of mechanical energy to drive a pump is provided. The hybrid drive system may include a first mover for generating first mechanical energy, a pump, a drivetrain for providing first mechanical energy from the first mover to the pump, and a second mover within the drivetrain to generate and provide second mechanical energy to the pump. The multiple sources of mechanical energy may provide flexibility with respect to system design and allow for alternative sources of fuel and energy to be used to drive pumping systems. This may reduce the total diesel fuel consumption necessary to perform a well stimulation operation as well as provide for configurations in which diesel engines may be excluded from the pumping process in favor of alternative energy sources that typically do not have sufficient torque capacity to power a pump.

Claims (37)

1. A method of performing a fracturing operation in a subterranean formation comprising:

providing or having electricity from a first power source;

having the first power source directly or indirectly coupled to an electric motor;

using the electric motor to provide a first mechanical energy;

outputting a second mechanical energy from a mover powered using a second power source different than the first power source;

combining the first and second mechanical energies;

using a drivetrain to output the combined first and second mechanical energies to directly power a pump; and

pumping a fluid into the subterranean formation using the pump.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electric motor and the pump are mounted on a trailer.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pump is fluidically coupled to a wellbore in the subterranean formation through a fluid manifold.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first power source further comprises a storage device comprising a capacitor bank, a battery, a flywheel, or a pressure tank.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first power source further comprises a storage device that receives energy generated from an on-site energy source.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first power source further comprises a storage device that receives energy from a gas-turbine generator or an internal combustion engine.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first power source further comprises a storage device that receives energy from a generator using wellhead gas.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second power source uses a hydrocarbon-based fuel, hydraulic energy, or thermal energy to provide the second mechanical energy.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mover comprises a diesel engine, a spark-ignited natural gas engine, or a dual fuel engine that operates in parallel or in series with the electric motor to power the pump.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising flexibly dividing power between the electric motor and the diesel engine, the spark-ignited natural gas engine, or the dual fuel engine.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first power source comprises solar cells, wind turbines, a storage device, or a hybrid transmission of a truck.

12. A method of performing a fracturing operation in a subterranean formation comprising:

using a plurality of movers to output a plurality of mechanical energies, each mover outputting a different mechanical energy;

providing or having electricity from a power source;

using the electricity to power one of the movers;

using another source of fuel or energy and not the electricity to power another one of the movers;

combining the first and second mechanical energies;

using a drivetrain to output the combined first and second mechanical energies to directly power a pump; and

pumping a fluid into the subterranean formation using the pump.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of movers operate in parallel.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of movers operate in series.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising using a controller to direct operation of the plurality of movers.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising flexibly dividing power between the plurality of movers.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the pump is fluidically coupled to a wellbore in the subterranean formation through a fluid manifold.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the power source further comprises a storage device comprising a capacitor bank, a battery, a flywheel, or a pressure tank.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the power source further comprises a storage device that receives energy generated from an on-site energy source.

20. The method of claim 12 , wherein the power source further comprises a storage device that receives energy from a gas-turbine generator or an internal combustion engine.

21. The method of claim 12 , wherein the power source further comprises a storage device that receives energy from a generator using wellhead gas.

22. The method of claim 12 , wherein the another source of fuel or energy is hydrocarbon-based fuel, hydraulic energy, or thermal energy.

23. The method of claim 12 , wherein the power source comprises solar cells, wind turbines, a storage device, or a hybrid transmission of a truck.
