Abstract

A system and method for records management and classification of files in a content management system having a server system that stores the files. A system detects when at least one of the files is classified by a user of a client computing system as a classified file, and based on the detecting of the classification of the one or more files, each classified file is removed from the client computing system. The system further detects when at least one of the files is declared as a permanent record by the user of the client computing system, and based on the detecting of the declaration as a permanent record, prevents editing by the client computing system of each file declared as a permanent record.

Claims (32)

1. A computer-implemented records management system for content classification comprising:

a server computing system for storing content including one or more files, the server computing system being in communication with a client computing system over a communications network;

an application executed on the records management system to detect a synchronization event between the server computer and the client computer,

in response to detecting the synchronization event, the application performing at least one of:

removing a first file from the client computing system, in response to detecting the first file having been classified as belonging to at least a first class, and

preventing the client computing system from editing a second file, in response to detecting the second file being declared as a permanent record.

2. A computer program product for records management, the computer program product comprising a non-transitory machine-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by at least one programmable processor, cause the at least one programmable processor to perform operations comprising:

storing content including one or more files, using a server computing system in communication with a client computing system over a communications network;

detecting a synchronization event between the server computer and the client computer, using an application executed on the records management system;

in response to detecting the synchronization event, the application removing a first file from the client computing system, in response to detecting the first file having been classified as belonging to at least a first class.

3. A computer-implemented records management method comprising:

storing content including one or more files on a server computing system being in communication with a client computing system over a communications network;

detecting a synchronization event between the server computer and the client computer;

removing a first file from the client computing system, in response to detecting the first file having been classified as belonging to at least a first class, and

preventing the client computing system from editing a second file, in response to detecting the second file being declared as a permanent record, classification of the one or more files being performed by user instructions provided to the client computing system remotely being synchronized with the record management system over the communications network.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein classification of the one or more files is performed by user instructions provided to the client computing system remotely communicating with the record management system over the communications network.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more files are declared as permanent by user instructions provided to the client computing system remotely communicating with the record management system over the communications network.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the server computing system is a cloud-based server computing system.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first file is managed by the record management system according to a first policy, in response to being classified in the first class.

8. The computer program product of claim 2 , wherein classification of the one or more files is performed by user instructions provided to the client computing system remotely communicating with the record management system over the communications network.

9. The computer program product of claim 2 , wherein the one or more files are declared as permanent by user instructions provided to the client computing system remotely communicating with the record management system over the communications network.

10. The computer program product of claim 2 , wherein the server computing system is a cloud-based server computing system.

11. The computer program product of claim 2 , wherein the first file is managed by the record management system according to a first policy, in response to being classified in the first class.

12. The computer program product of claim 2 , wherein the client computing system is prevented from editing a second file, in response to detecting the second file as being declared a permanent record.

The method of claim 3 , wherein the one or more files are declared as permanent by user instructions provided to the client computing system remotely communicating with the record management system over the communications network, such that the one or more files declared as permanent are queued by the server computing system for transfer to the client computing system over the communications network.

14. The system of claim 5 , wherein the one or more files declared as permanent are queued by the server computing system for transfer to the client computing system over the communications network.

15. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first file is managed by the record management system according to a second policy, in response to being classified in a second class.

16. The computer program product of claim 9 , wherein the one or more files declared as permanent are queued by the server computing system for transfer to the client computing system over the communications network.

17. The computer program product of claim 11 , wherein the first file is managed by the record management system according to a second policy, in response to being classified in a second class.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the first policy is different than the second policy and the first class is distinguishable from the second class.

19. The computer program product of claim 17 , wherein the first policy is different than the second policy and the first class is distinguishable from the second class.

20. The computer program product of claim 17 , wherein the first class is distinguishable from the second class.
