Abstract

A system generating power is disclosed. The system generates power from brine discharged into a body of water, such as a sea or ocean. The system comprises a brine source and a pipe. The brine source located at a first elevation transfers brine into the pipe. Brine travels through the pipe and is discharged into the body of water through a discharge outlet located at a second elevation. The first elevation is a higher elevation than the second elevation. Power is generated due the gravitational hydrostatic pressure difference between the brine and the water at the discharge outlet due to the density difference between brine and water, and the elevation difference between the first elevation and the second elevation. In some embodiments, power may be extracted by a turbine, or pressure exchanger, or generator. In some embodiments, the brine source may comprise brine produced by a desalination system.

Claims (38)

1. A system for generating power comprising:

a brine source;

a pipe comprising a generator;

and

a brine discharge outlet;

wherein the brine source is at a first elevation and the brine discharge outlet is at a second elevation; and

wherein the first elevation is higher than the second elevation; and

wherein the pipe connects the brine source at the first elevation to the brine discharge outlet at the second elevation; and

wherein the brine discharge outlet and at least a portion of the pipe are configured to be located beneath a surface of a body of water; and

wherein power is generated prior to brine mixing with water from the body of water by transferring brine from the brine source at the first elevation through the pipe comprising the generator to the brine discharge outlet at the second elevation and wherein the brine in the pipe is a liquid and wherein the body of water is a liquid and wherein the liquid body of water has a lower salinity and a lower density than the brine in the pipe and wherein the system is configured such that power is generated due to a gravitational hydrostatic pressure difference between the liquid brine in the pipe and the liquid body of water due to the density difference between the liquid brine in the pipe and the liquid water in the body of water.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the body of water comprises a sea or ocean.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the brine source comprises a desalination concentrate, or a desalination retentate.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the brine source comprises a desalination system.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the generator generates power in the form of electricity; and wherein the system is configured to employ the electricity to at least partially power the desalination system.

6. The system of claim 5 wherein the electricity is transferred from the generator to the desalination system with a subsea umbilical.

7. The system of claim 4 wherein at least a portion of the desalination system is floating on the body of water.

8. The system of claim 4 wherein at least a portion of the desalination system is beneath the surface of the body of water.

9. The system of claim 4 wherein at least a portion of the desalination system is on land.

10. The system of claim 4 wherein the desalination system is operably connected to a power source by a subsea cable.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the pipe comprises a riser.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein the system is configured such that brine is discharged into the body of water.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein the generator is located beneath the surface of the water body.

14. The system of claim 1 wherein the brine source comprises brine from an evaporation system.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein the generator comprises a power exchanger and wherein the system is configured such that at least a portion of the power generated is employed to pressurize at least a portion of desalination feed.

16. The system of claim 1 wherein the discharge outlet comprises one or more distributors to reduce a localized increase in salinity adjacent to the discharge outlet.

17. The system of claim 1 wherein the generator is at an elevation within 50 meters of the brine discharge outlet.

18. The system of claim 1 wherein the density difference between the brine and the water in the body of water is greater than 0.005 kg/L.

19. The system of claim 1 wherein the system is configured to store energy by storing brine in a storage reservoir.

20. A method for generating power comprising:

transferring brine from a brine source at a first elevation through a pipe comprising a generator to a brine discharge outlet at a second elevation below a surface of a body of water wherein the brine in the pipe and the body of water are each a liquid and wherein the brine in the pipe has a higher salinity and a higher density than the body of water; and

generating power prior to brine mixing with water from the body of water using a gravitational hydrostatic pressure difference between the brine in the pipe and the water in the body of water due to the density difference between the brine and the water in the body of water.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein the body of water comprises a sea or ocean.

22. The method of claim 20 wherein the brine source comprises a desalination method.

23. The method of claim 22 wherein the generator generates power in the form of electricity; and wherein the method is configured to employ the electricity to at least partially power the desalination method.

24. The method of claim 20 wherein the pipe comprises a riser.

25. The method of claim 20 wherein the generator comprises a power exchanger and wherein the method is configured such that at least a portion of the power generated is employed to pressurize at least a portion of desalination feed.

26. The method of claim 20 wherein the system is configured to store energy by storing brine in a storage reservoir.

27. The method of claim 20 wherein the brine source comprises brine from an evaporation method.
