Abstract

Provided herein are energy storage devices. In some cases, the energy storage devices are capable of being transported on a vehicle and storing a large amount of energy. An energy storage device is provided comprising at least one liquid metal electrode, an energy storage capacity of at least about 1 MWh and a response time less than or equal to about 100 milliseconds (ms).

Claims (23)

1. An electrochemical energy storage system, comprising

a thermal chamber comprising a cavity, wherein said thermal chamber is configured to thermally insulate said cavity from an environment external to said thermal chamber, and wherein said thermal chamber has a surface area-to-volume ratio of 10 m −1 ;

a plurality of energy storage cells disposed in said cavity of said thermal management chamber, wherein an energy storage cell of said plurality of energy storage cells comprises a negative electrode, a positive electrode and an electrolyte disposed between said negative electrode and said positive electrode, wherein said electrolyte and at least one of said negative electrode and said positive electrode are in a liquid state at an operating temperature of said energy storage cell, wherein said energy storage cell has a surface area-to-volume ratio of less than or equal to about 100 m −1 ; and

a frame disposed in said cavity of said thermal chamber and configured to support said plurality of energy storage cells.

2. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of heaters disposed in said cavity of said thermal chamber and supported by said frame, wherein said plurality of heaters are configured to distribute thermal energy throughout said cavity and maintain said electrolyte and said at least one of said negative electrode and said positive electrode in a liquid state.

3. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 2 , further comprising a computer system configured to monitor and regulate a temperature of at least a portion of said electrochemical energy storage system.

4. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 2 , wherein said plurality of heaters are configured to maintain said cavity at an operating temperature from about 150° C. to 750° C.

5. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said frame further comprises at least one fluid flow path for bringing a thermal management fluid in thermal communication with at least a subset of said plurality of energy storage cells.

6. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 5 , wherein said at least one fluid flow path is fluidically separated from said plurality of energy storage cells such that said thermal management fluid does not contact said plurality of energy storage cells.

7. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 5 , further comprising a fluid flow system that is configured and arranged to direct said thermal management fluid through said at least one fluid flow path of said frame.

8. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 7 , wherein said fluid flow system comprises a fan or pump.

9. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 5 , further comprising an actuator configured to direct flow of said thermal management fluid.

10. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 1 , further comprising a fluid flow system that is configured and arranged to direct a thermal management fluid through said cavity.

11. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said negative electrode comprises an alkali or alkaline earth metal.

12. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 11 , wherein said alkali or alkaline earth metal is lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium or a combination thereof.

13. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said electrolyte comprises a salt of an alkali or alkaline earth metal.

14. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said electrolyte is a molten halide electrolyte.

15. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said positive electrode comprises tin, lead, bismuth, antimony, tellurium, selenium, or any combination thereof.

16. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said energy storage cell of said plurality of energy storage cells further comprises a negative current terminal in electrical communication with the negative electrode and a cell housing in electrical communication with said positive electrode.

17. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 16 , wherein said negative current terminal is electrically isolated from said cell housing.

18. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 17 , wherein two or more individual energy storage cells of said plurality of energy storage cells are coupled in series such that said negative current terminal of said energy storage cell of said plurality of energy storage cells is in electrical communication with a cell housing of at least another energy storage cell.

19. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 18 , wherein said negative current terminal of said energy storage cell of said plurality of energy storage cells is in electrical communication with said cell housing of said at least another energy storage cell by a busbar or interconnection component.

20. The electrochemical energy storage system of claim 2 , wherein said plurality of energy storage cells are configured to provide electrical energy to said plurality of heaters to operate said plurality of heaters.
