Abstract

Methods and systems for preparing a bone for a cementless joint implant are described. A first bone removal operation is performed using a burring device that has a first plurality of settings. The settings for the burring device are adjusted to a second plurality of settings, and a second bone removal operation is performed using the burring device. The adjustment to the settings may allow a surgeon to perform bulk bone removal in the first instance and fine bone removal in the second instance. The process of adjusting and performing subsequent bone removal operations may be performed any number of times during the bone preparation process. The adjustments to the settings may be received automatically from a computer-assisted surgical system, manually entered by a medical professional, or a combination of the two.

Claims (28)

1 . A method of preparing a bone for a cementless joint implant having a plurality of facets, the method comprising:

performing a first bone removal operation using a burring device with a first plurality of settings;

based on a distance between a current bone surface and an intended final cut plane, adjusting the first plurality of settings to a second plurality of settings; and

performing a second bone removal operation using the burring device with a second plurality of settings;

wherein the intended final cut plane comprises a plurality of planes, each plane corresponding to a facet of the cementless joint implant.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of settings includes a first burr rotational velocity and the second plurality of settings includes a second burr rotational velocity, wherein the first burr rotational velocity differs from the second burr rotational velocity.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of settings includes a first burr exposure and the second plurality of settings includes a second burr exposure, wherein the first burr exposure differs from the second burr exposure.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of settings includes a first torque value and the second plurality of settings includes a second torque value, wherein the first torque value differs from the second torque value.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of settings includes a first burr head having a first cutting geometry and the second plurality of settings includes a second burr head having a second cutting geometry, wherein the first cutting geometry differs from the second cutting geometry.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of settings includes a first virtual boundary for the burring device, and wherein the second plurality of settings includes a second virtual boundary for the burring device that differs from the first virtual boundary for the burring device.

7 . (canceled)

8 . A method of preparing a bone for a cementless joint implant having a plurality of facets, the method comprising:

performing a first bone removal operation using a first plurality of settings that includes a burring device comprising a first burr head having a first cutting geometry;

based on a distance between a current bone surface and an intended final cut plane, removing the first burr head from the burring device;

affixing to the burring device a second burr head having a second cutting geometry different from the first cutting geometry; and

performing a second bone removal operation using a second plurality of settings that includes the burring device having the second burr head;

wherein the intended final cut plane comprises a plurality of planes, each plane corresponding to a facet of the cementless joint implant.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the first cutting geometry is coarse, and wherein the second cutting geometry is fine.

10 . The method of claim 8 wherein the distance between the current bone surface and the intended final cut plan ranges from about 1 mm to about 5 mm.

11 . A system for preparing a bone for a cementless joint implant, the system comprising:

a computer-aided surgical system (CASS), a robotic arm, a surgical saw removably coupled to the robotic arm, and a burring device removably coupled to the robotic arm;

wherein the CASS is configured to facilitate a first bone removal operation using the surgical saw with a first plurality of settings;

wherein the CASS is configured to adjust the first plurality of settings to a second plurality of settings; and

wherein the CASS is configured to facilitate a second bone removal operation using the burring device with the second plurality of settings.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the first plurality of settings includes at least one of a first rotational velocity, a first exposure, includes a first torque value, a first head having a first cutting geometry, and a first virtual boundary for the surgical saw.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the second plurality of settings includes at least one of a second rotational velocity less than the first rotational velocity, a second exposure that differs from the first exposure, a second torque value different from the first torque value, a second head having a second cutting geometry different from the first cutting geometry, and a second virtual boundary for the burring device that differs from the first virtual boundary for the surgical saw.

14 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the CASS is configured to adjust the first plurality of settings to the second plurality of settings based on a distance between a current bone surface and an intended final cut plane.

15 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the CASS is further configured to provide feedback to a user regarding at least one of a surface geometry of an intended final cut plane and a fit between the intended final cut plane and an implant.
