Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for determining a topology of a network comprising a plurality of intermediary devices and intermediary paths. One method includes transmitting probes having a TTL value with a destination set to a destination device; receiving, for each probe transmitted, a response including an IP address of a responding device; determining whether more than one responding device has responded to the probes; determining whether more than one responding device has been found for two previous transmissions of probes when more than one responding device has responded to the probes; and transmitting, for each more than one responding device, probes having a decreased TTL value with a destination set to one of the IP addresses of the more than one responding devices, when more than one responding device has been found for two previous transmissions.

Claims (56)

1. A method comprising:

transmitting, from a source device, at least two data packets to a destination device in a network;

receiving, at the source device, a response to the at least two data packets from a first intermediary device and a second intermediary device;

determining, by the source device, whether either of the first intermediary device or the second intermediary device has responded to previous transmissions of data packets from the source device; and

determining, by the source device, a topology of the network based at least on the corresponding responses received from the first intermediary device and the second intermediary device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting additional data packets to one or more of the first intermediary device and the second intermediary device based on determining, by the source device, whether either of the first intermediary device or the second intermediary device has responded to previous transmissions of data packets from the source device.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing, by the source device, the corresponding responses received from the first intermediary device and the second intermediary device.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, by the source device, whether an additional response has been received from the second intermediary device in response to the transmitted at least two data packets based on receiving the response from the first intermediary device and the second intermediary device.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining whether either of the first intermediary device or the second intermediary device has responded to previous transmissions of data packets from the source device further comprises:

incrementing, by the source device, a multiple path flag; and

determining, by the source device, whether the multiple path flag is greater than one.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing, by the source device for each data packet transmitted, the response received and a time-to-live (“TTL”) value of the transmitted data packet.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, by the source device, whether an IP address of a response is an IP address of the destination device.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

increasing, by the source device, a time-to-live (“TTL”) value of each of the at least two data packets when the first intermediary device and the second intermediary device have not responded to each of the at least two data packets; and

transmitting, from the source device, at least two additional data packets having the increased TTL value with a destination set to a destination device.

9. A system comprising:

a data storage device that stores instructions; and

at least one processor configured to execute the instructions to perform operations comprising:

transmitting, from a source device, at least two data packets to a destination device in a network;

receiving, at the source device, a response to the at least two data packets from a first intermediary device and a second intermediary device;

determining, by the source device, whether either of the first intermediary device or the second intermediary device has responded to previous transmissions of data packets from the source device; and

determining, by the source device, a topology of the network based at least on the corresponding responses received from the first intermediary device and the second intermediary device.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to perform further operations comprising:

transmitting additional data packets to one or more of the first intermediary device and the second intermediary device based on determining, by the source device, whether either of the first intermediary device or the second intermediary device has responded to previous transmissions of data packets from the source device.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to perform further operations comprising:

storing, by the source device, the corresponding responses received from the first intermediary device and the second intermediary device.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to perform further operations comprising:

determining, by the source device, whether an additional response has been received from the second intermediary device in response to the transmitted at least two data packets based on receiving the response from the first intermediary device and the second intermediary device.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein determining whether either of the first intermediary device or the second intermediary device has responded to previous transmissions of data packets from the source device further comprises:

incrementing, by the source device, a multiple path flag; and

determining, by the source device, whether the multiple path flag is greater than one.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to perform further operations comprising:

storing, by the source device for each data packet transmitted, the response received and a time-to-live (“TTL”) value of the transmitted data packet.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to perform further operations comprising:

determining, by the source device, whether an IP address of a response is an IP address of the destination device.

16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to perform further operations comprising:

increasing, by the source device, a time-to-live (“TTL”) value of each of the at least two data packets when the first intermediary device and the second intermediary device have not responded to each of the at least two data packets; and

transmitting, from the source device, at least two additional data packets having the increased TTL value with a destination set to a destination device.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to perform operations comprising:

transmitting, from a source device, at least two data packets to a destination device in a network;

receiving, at the source device, a response to the at least two data packets from a first intermediary device and a second intermediary device;

determining, by the source device, whether either of the first intermediary device or the second intermediary device has responded to previous transmissions of data packets from the source device; and

determining, by the source device, a topology of the network based at least on the corresponding responses received from the first intermediary device and the second intermediary device.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the instructions cause the at least one processor to perform further operations comprising:

determining, by the source device, whether an additional response has been received from the second intermediary device in response to the transmitted at least two data packets based on receiving the response from the first intermediary device and the second intermediary device.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein determining whether either of the first intermediary device or the second intermediary device has responded to previous transmissions of data packets from the source device further comprises:

incrementing, by the source device, a multiple path flag; and

determining, by the source device, whether the multiple path flag is greater than one.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the instructions cause the at least one processor to perform further operations comprising:

determining, by the source device, whether an IP address of a response is an IP address of the destination device.
