Abstract

An instrument assembly can comprise a shaft comprising a first drive portion of a drive system, an end effector comprising a second drive portion of the drive system, and an articulation joint rotatably connecting the end effector to the shaft. The end effector is rotatable between a first position and a second position about the articulation joint, wherein the first drive portion is not operably engaged with the second drive portion when the end effector is in the first position, and operably engaged with the second drive portion when the end effector is in the second position. The end effector can comprise a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein the first jaw is movable relative to the second jaw between an open position and a closed position within a closure plane, and wherein the end effector is rotatable within an articulation plane which is co-planar with the closure plane.

Claims (39)

1. A surgical staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body;

a longitudinal slot defined in said cartridge body, wherein said longitudinal slot defines a first side and a second side of said cartridge body; and

a plurality of staples positioned within staple cavities defined in said first side of said cartridge body, wherein said plurality of staples comprises:

a proximal grouping of staples comprising a first proximal longitudinal row of staples and a second proximal longitudinal row of staples, wherein said first proximal longitudinal row of staples is a first distance from said longitudinal slot and said second proximal longitudinal row of staples is a second distance from said longitudinal slot, wherein said second distance is greater than said first distance;

a distal grouping of staples comprising a first distal longitudinal row of staples and a second distal longitudinal row of staples; and

an intermediate longitudinal row of staples positioned entirely between said proximal grouping of staples and said distal grouping of staples, wherein at least one staple of said intermediate longitudinal row of staples comprises a longitudinally extending length that is greater than a corresponding longitudinally extending length of each staple of said proximal grouping of staples and each staple of said distal grouping of staples.

2. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein each staple of said proximal grouping of staples and said distal grouping of staples comprises a first longitudinal staple width, wherein each staple of said intermediate longitudinal row of staples comprises a second longitudinal staple width, and wherein said first longitudinal staple width and said second longitudinal staple width are different.

3. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said first distal longitudinal row of staples is longitudinally aligned with said first proximal longitudinal row of staples, and wherein said second distal longitudinal row of staples is longitudinally aligned with said second proximal longitudinal row of staples.

4. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said intermediate longitudinal row of staples comprises only a single row of staples.

5. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said proximal grouping of staples further comprises a third proximal longitudinal row of staples, and wherein said distal grouping of staples further comprises a third distal longitudinal row of staples.

6. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 5 , wherein said third proximal longitudinal row of staples, said third distal longitudinal row of staples, and said intermediate longitudinal row of staples are longitudinally aligned with each other.

7. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 5 , wherein each staple of said first proximal longitudinal row of staples comprises a first lateral width, wherein each staple of said third proximal longitudinal row of staples comprises a second lateral width, and wherein said first lateral width and said second lateral width are different.

8. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 5 , wherein each staple of said third proximal longitudinal row of staples comprises a first lateral width, wherein each staple of said intermediate longitudinal row of staples comprises a second lateral width, and wherein said first lateral width and said second lateral width are different.

9. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said longitudinal slot defines a longitudinal axis, wherein said surgical staple cartridge assembly further comprises a tissue stop positioned at a distal end of said surgical staple cartridge assembly along the longitudinal axis.

10. A surgical staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body;

a longitudinal slot defined in said cartridge body, wherein said longitudinal slot defines a first side and a second side of said cartridge body;

a plurality of staple cavities defined in said first side;

a plurality of first staples positioned within said staple cavities, wherein said plurality of first staples comprises:

a proximal cluster of first staples comprising a first proximal longitudinal row of first staples and a second proximal longitudinal row of first staples, wherein said first proximal longitudinal row of first staples is a first distance from said longitudinal slot and said second proximal longitudinal row of first staples is a second distance from said longitudinal slot, wherein said first distance and said second distance are different;

a distal cluster of first staples comprising a first distal longitudinal row of first staples and a second distal longitudinal row of first staples; and

a plurality of second staples positioned within said staple cavities, wherein said plurality of second staples comprises an intermediate longitudinal row of second staples positioned entirely between said proximal cluster of first staples and said distal cluster of first staples, wherein at least one staple of said plurality of second staples comprises a longitudinally extending length that is greater than a corresponding longitudinally extending length of each staple of said plurality of first staples.

11. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 10 , further comprising a plurality of third staples positioned within said staple cavities.

12. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 11 , wherein said plurality of third staples comprises a third proximal longitudinal row of third staples longitudinally aligned with said intermediate longitudinal row of second staples and a third distal longitudinal row of third staples longitudinally aligned with said intermediate longitudinal row of second staples.

13. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 11 , wherein said first staples and said third staples comprise different lateral widths.

14. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 11 , wherein said second staples are longitudinally wider than said first staples.

15. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 11 , wherein said first staples and said third staples comprise different lateral widths.

16. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 10 , wherein said longitudinal slot defines a longitudinal axis, wherein said surgical staple cartridge assembly further comprises a tissue stop positioned at a distal end of said surgical staple cartridge assembly along the longitudinal axis.

17. The surgical staple cartridge assembly of claim 10 , wherein said plurality of second staples comprises only a single row of staples.

18. A surgical staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body;

a longitudinal slot defined in said cartridge body, wherein said longitudinal slot defines a first side and a second side of said cartridge body;
